• EXHAUSTED—BUT STILL CHASING.

That may be one of the most powerful descriptions of Gideon and his 300 men in Judges 8.

    https://patrickryanlewis.com/2026/08/14/exhausted-but-still-chasing-persistence-compromise-and-justice-in-judges-84-21/

They had already fought a tremendous battle. They were hungry. They were exhausted. They asked fellow Israelites for help and were refused. The people who should have encouraged them doubted they would succeed.

    But they kept going.

Judges 8:4–21 reminds us that being tired does not necessarily mean God is finished with what He has called us to do.

Sometimes faithfulness means continuing to pray when you haven’t seen the answer.

Continuing to serve when nobody seems to notice.
Continuing to resist temptation when the battle feels repetitive.
Continuing to obey when other people refuse to stand beside you.
Continuing to trust God when you cannot yet see the outcome.

Gideon’s story also gives us sobering lessons about unbelief, compromise, leadership, justice, and the danger of standing on the sidelines when God calls us to participate.

You can be tired and still be faithful.

You can be discouraged and still be obedient.

Sometimes the next act of faith isn’t something dramatic.

Sometimes it is simply taking the next step.

Read the latest study on Judges 8:4–21 — “Exhausted, but Still Chasing.”

  • In this Bible study, Patrick looks at Judges 6:1-10 and the opening of the Gideon narrative. Before Gideon ever steps onto the scene, Scripture shows us the spiritual condition of Israel, the oppression of Midian, and the mercy of God in sending His Word to confront His people.

    https://youtu.be/PgGJGjxKFAI

Bible used in this study: https://amzn.to/4oyiBD8

This passage reminds us that Israel’s greatest problem was not Midian. Their greatest problem was their disobedience to God. Before deliverance comes, God speaks truth. Before Gideon is called, Israel must be reminded of the LORD’s faithfulness, their covenant responsibility, and their failure to obey His voice.
In this study, we will examine the historical background of the Midianite oppression, the repeated cycle of sin in the book of Judges, and the deeper spiritual lessons found in Judges 6:1-10.

God disciplines His people when they turn from Him, but in mercy He speaks truth to call them back.

Judges 6:1-10 is not only a story about ancient Israel and Midianite oppression. It is a warning and invitation for us today. It calls us to examine repeated patterns of sin, remember the faithfulness of God, reject modern idols, and listen carefully to the voice of the LORD.

  • In this episode of *A Guy And His Bible*, we walk through Judges 2:16-19 and examine one of the darkest and most revealing cycles in all of Scripture. Even in Israel’s rebellion, compromise, and corruption, God continued to raise up deliverers because of His mercy and compassion.

    https://youtu.be/4xltGAj-DJA

    We discuss:
    • What it meant for God to raise up judges as deliverers
    • Why God rescued Israel even when they did not deserve it
    • How every judge in Scripture ultimately points forward to Jesus Christ
    • The dangerous downward spiral of unchecked compromise
    • Why external religion can never truly change the heart
    • The difference between following church culture and truly following Christ

The book of Judges reminds us that humanity’s greatest need is not better behavior, but a greater Deliverer. Every temporary and flawed judge points us toward Jesus — the perfect Judge, eternal Savior, and final Deliverer.

“There is always more grace than failure.”

  • In this teaching from Judges 2:1–10 (ESV), we explore one of the most tragic turning points in Israel’s history — the moment a generation arose that “did not know the LORD.”

    https://youtu.be/33zlmcOOo1M

This passage reveals how compromise, incomplete obedience, and spiritual neglect led Israel from victory into apostasy. We’ll examine the Angel of the LORD’s warning, Israel’s shallow repentance at Bochim, and the dangerous consequences of failing to pass faith on to the next generation.

    In this study, we discuss:
    • Why compromise always leads to bondage
    • The spiritual danger of tolerating sin
    • The difference between worldly sorrow and true repentance
    • How one generation can lose what the previous generation fought to preserve
    • Why discipleship and spiritual leadership matter

    Key Passage:
    Judges 2:1–10 (ESV)

If you are studying through the Book of Judges, this teaching will help you better understand the spiritual cycles that shaped Israel’s history — and the warnings that still apply to believers today.

  • In this powerful passage from the Book of Judges, we witness a turning point in Israel’s story—a shift from victory to compromise. What begins with faith-filled obedience quickly transitions into partial obedience, hesitation, and ultimately, spiritual decline.

    https://youtu.be/72ZTVoBzTII

This passage sets the tone for the entire book of Judges—a cycle of victory, compromise, oppression, and deliverance. It challenges us to examine our own lives: Are we walking in full obedience, or settling into compromise?

Key Theme: Partial obedience is still disobedience—and compromise always has consequences.

    Scripture: Judges 1:16–20 (NLT)

    In this teaching, we cover:

Courage in the face of opposition
    The blessing that follows obedience
What it means to ask boldly, like Achsah

  • I have just finished working through the #BookofJudges in one of my daily devotional readings, and this verse always is one that gets me, because it reminds me so much of what is happening in the the world today. As Christians, we look around and see those who are not saved simply doing what they want and believing they are "good enough" compared to others. Our mission is not to browbeat individuals into believing God's Word, I mission is to help all who are lost understand the only way to true everlasting peace is to give up all of yourself and allow Jesus to take hold of your life. There is no other way. When we do what we believe is right in our own eyes, we are disregarding the plans and design God has for us.
