Thursday of the 12th Week in Ordinary Time | Matthew 7:21-29

The True Disciple; The Wise and Foolish Builders

    Jesus said to his disciples:

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven."

These are among the most sobering words Jesus ever speaks.

At first, they may surprise us.

We might expect Jesus to say that simply believing in Him, speaking His name, or performing religious acts is enough. Yet Jesus goes much deeper. He reminds us that authentic discipleship is not measured merely by words, emotions, or appearances.

A person may speak eloquently about faith.
A person may participate in religious activities.
A person may even appear outwardly holy.

But Christianity is not primarily about appearances.

    It is about relationship.

It is about allowing God's will to shape every aspect of our lives.

    Jesus continues:

"Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you.'"

The tragedy is not that these people lacked religious activity.

The tragedy is that they lacked intimacy with Christ.

    They knew about Jesus.

But they did not truly know Him.

    They spoke His name.

But they did not surrender their hearts.

True discipleship begins when faith moves from our lips into our lives.

Jesus then offers one of the most memorable images in all of Scripture:

"Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock."

Both builders heard the same weather forecast.

    Both experienced the same storms.

Both desired to build a house.

The difference was hidden beneath the surface.

    One built upon rock.

    The other built upon sand.

The wise builder took the time to establish a solid foundation. When storms arrived—and they inevitably did—the house remained standing.

The foolish builder chose convenience over commitment. He built quickly, perhaps even beautifully, but without a firm foundation. When the rains fell and the floods came, everything collapsed.

Jesus is teaching us a profound spiritual truth:

    Storms come to everyone.

No one is exempt from suffering.

    Illness comes.
    Disappointments come.
    Temptations come.
    Loss comes.
    Moments of doubt come.

The question is not whether storms will come.

The question is: What foundation are we building upon?

Many people build on the shifting sands of success, popularity, wealth, pleasure, or public approval.

These foundations may appear strong for a time.

But when life's storms arrive, they cannot sustain us.

Only Christ is the Rock that never fails.

To build upon this Rock means more than admiring Jesus' teachings.

    It means living them.

It means forgiving when forgiveness is difficult.

    It means loving enemies.

It means choosing mercy over judgment.

It means serving rather than seeking recognition.

It means trusting God when circumstances seem uncertain.

The conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount leaves us with a choice.

Jesus has spent three chapters revealing the values of the Kingdom: the Beatitudes, prayer, mercy, purity of heart, love of enemies, trust in the Father, and authentic righteousness.

    Now He asks:

Will you merely admire these words?

Or will you build your life upon them?

    Reflection

Faith that remains only in words will not withstand life's storms.

A genuine relationship with Christ transforms how we think, speak, forgive, love, and live.

Every day, through small decisions, we are laying the foundation of our spiritual house.

Today, Jesus invites us to examine that foundation honestly.

Are we building upon the solid rock of obedience and intimacy with Him?

Or are we relying on the shifting sands of appearances, comfort, and self-sufficiency?

    Context (Important)

This Gospel concludes the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus' foundational teaching on life in the Kingdom of God. After presenting the Beatitudes, teaching on prayer, mercy, almsgiving, trust, and authentic righteousness, Jesus ends with a call to decision. Hearing His words is not enough; discipleship requires action.

The crowds were astonished because Jesus taught with divine authority—not merely interpreting God's Word, but speaking as the very Son of God.

    Truths to Remember

    • Authentic discipleship requires both faith and obedience.
    • Religious activity alone cannot replace a living relationship with Christ.
    • Storms come to everyone; foundations determine whether we stand.
    • Jesus Himself is the unshakable Rock upon which we must build.
    • Small daily acts of obedience strengthen our spiritual foundation.

    Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the eternal Rock upon which we desire to build our lives. Help us not merely to hear Your words, but to live them faithfully each day. Strengthen us during life's storms, deepen our relationship with You, and teach us to build upon the solid foundation of Your love and truth. Amen.

    Reflection

What foundation are you building your life upon today, and what practical step can you take to build more firmly upon Christ?

DAY 3 – THE FIRM FOUNDATION
What Has God Been Building Over These Years?

#WorshipAndTheWord – Built on the Rock
    #BuildMyLife #Housefires

God has been building something in me for 55 years—and it will stand.

Jesus is not just my Saviour—He is my foundation. Through every season, every challenge, and every victory, He has been the Rock beneath my life, establishing something unshakable through His finished work on the cross.
This journey has not been random—it has been intentional. Every lesson, every step of faith, and every moment of obedience has been part of God building a life that can carry purpose into the next season.

    Designed With Purpose
God has been forming my life long before this moment
    Psalm 139:13–16 (BSB)
“For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well.
My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.”
Our lives are not accidental—God has been intentionally building and ordering every step from the very beginning, laying the foundation, and helping us build

    A Foundation That Stands
Storms reveal what God has built
    Matthew 7:24-25
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.”
What God builds in obedience will stand through every storm

    God Is the True Builder
Every year has been in His hands
    Psalm 127:1
“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain.”
My life is not self-built—it is God-established

The Power of a Wise Builder
What is built now impacts what comes next
    Proverbs 14:1
“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”
Parents are placed by God to help us build lives with God's Wisdom to build a legacy that continues beyond today

    He Finishes What He Starts
God’s work in your life is still in progress
    Philippians 1:6
“being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
What God started in you, He will faithfully complete—your foundation is still being built for what’s ahead

    Beloved:
Look back and recognise what God has built in you. Reject every lie that says your journey has been wasted or your foundation is weak. God has been at work—strengthening, shaping, and preparing you.
This is not the end of a season—it is the strengthening of your foundation for what comes next. Stand firm, trust His work, and move forward with confidence.
God brings some people into your life for a season, to teach you lessons or help you grow. Others come for a reason, to fulfill a specific purpose, and some for a lifetime. Learn to appreciate each one for how they help to build your life.

    Prayer:
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for every year You have been building my life. I am grateful for each person that you have brought into my life that has helped to build me into the man I am. I'm not yet who I am meant to be but you are shaping me and building me into that man of God I'm called to be.
So I reject every lie of intimidation, regret, failure, or wasted time. I receive Your truth—that You have been establishing something strong and lasting in me.
Holy Spirit, empower me to continue building on Christ, to walk in obedience, and to step confidently into what You have prepared next.
I'm confident that you will finish your good work in me, and I will bring joy to your heart My Father, and glory to your name.
I declare that my foundation is secure, and my future is established in You.
    In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

It’s not enough to hear the Word — we must live it.
