Living on the Edge

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1
The shouts ran through the camp like wildfire, “The spies are back! The spies are back!” The Israelites were camped in the wilderness of Paran, just outside the Promised Land which God had described to Moses as “a good and large land…flowing with milk and honey.” Exodus 3:8.
Twelve men had been sent to spy out the land—the strength of the people, their dwellings and strongholds, their soil, and their timber. Anticipation ran high for 40 days, and now they were back with pomegranates, figs, and a giant cluster of grapes! Can you imagine the look on the children’s faces?
The spies were excited. “We went to the land where you sent us,” they said. “It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.” Numbers 13:27. Time seemed to stand still as everyone pondered the prospects of a new life. Then suddenly, like a gong, someone said the word “nevertheless,” and the bliss was broken as ten of the twelve spies drew their attention to the obstacles. “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants,” they added, “and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants… and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Number 13:32–33. Swiftly, by their report, those ten men managed to sway over 500,000 people to distrust their God who had brought them out of Egypt!
One man, however, hadn’t lost sight of the promise. Caleb, the leader of the tribe of Judah “quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’” Numbers 13:30.
It was called the Land of Promise because it was exactly that—the land promised by God. Entrance to it depended on their trust in God’s promise. Here was the great issue that has always been at the core of our human experience: Trust in man, or trust in God. Would they depend on their own strength? Or would they depend on His strength and promise? Their response would decide their future.
Today, we are also on the edge of the Promised Land. Global warming, the world economy, crime, disease, natural disasters—all these signs point to the fact that a huge crisis is coming. But so is our Lord! God’s Word has not left us ignorant concerning the challenges that lie ahead. The Bible says, “And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation….” Daniel 12:1. Our great challenge will simply be to trust and obey. Do we enter daily life clothed in works of righteousness we have done? Or is our strength in the Lord and in the power of His might? (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 6:10.)
Only two of those 12 spies were allowed to enter into Canaan—Caleb and Joshua—for the Lord was grieved with that generation (Psalm 95:10). But I’m so glad to know there will be many more who will enter into glory, for the Apostle John says, “I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands.” Revelation 7:9.
We are not called to view the future through the stained glass of human experience, but to keep our eyes on Jesus, “the author and finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:2.
