A fictional story that we can relate to!
"Miss Lindsey is a preschool teacher. The children in her class adore her; they wake up on school days excitedly chanting "Miss Lindsey, Miss Lindsey" as they get dressed and climb into their minivans. She cheerfully leads them in a song and story time, patiently attends to cuts and bumps, and judiciously breaks up arguments over trucks or Nilla Wafers. At the end of each day she kisses each boy or girl on the forehead, gives their parents a detailed account of the day, and wishes them a good evening at home.
The only problem is, Miss Lindsey hates her job. She feels lonely and frustrated. She thinks the children are precious, but she'd rather spend eight hours a day with adults, challenging herself intellectually."
Reflection:
Have you ever been really good at something that you really hate?
You organize office birthday parties that are legendary but you resent doing it every time.
Or maybe you have an instinct that kicks in and gives you exactly the right words to say in a difficult situation but you don't like the sadness or strained relationship that can come with it.
A strength is not the same thing as a calling. And being good at something you dislike doesn't mean that you have to do it all the time. Perhaps Lindsey should volunteer once a week in the church nursery, or maybe you could alternate hosting the birthday
parties
. The fact is God gave you that strength for a reason, so it's worth examining yourself to see what is the best way you can use your gifts for His glory.
Exodus 9:16 "But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth."
