• "Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy Hill?"

There's a program on ESPN called 30 for 30 and I watched a specific episode that recounted the 1983 draft for the NFL. The NFL draft is much like Psalm 15 in the Bible. When teams in the NFL are looking for somebody to fill a slot or an opening on the team, they are specifically looking for somebody with the physical talent, mental awareness as well as the maturity necessary to fill the vacancy for a specific slot.

Psalm 15 somewhat does the same thing but does not look for physical talent or ability so much as the character requirements of those who may dwell in heaven with God.

"He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart; He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; In who's eyes a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear The Lord; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change; He who does not put out his money at usery, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved."

Being accepted by God and getting into heaven should be looked at the same way reaching the level an athlete needs to become in order to be accepted by any given NFL team. Nothing less than absolute, total and complete dedication.

When it comes to the NFL draft, the main focus is on an athletes physical ability and talent. When it comes to getting into heaven, psalm 15 asks the question, who is righteous enough to approach God? Certainly no one is except Jesus, the Messiah himself. But there have always been those who stand before God as forgiven sinners, who's righteousness comes as a gift from God much like the talent that's given to an athlete getting into a professional sport.

As far as getting into the NFL, any chance I may have had has long-ago come and gone. However, I still have time to make sure that I do what's necessary and what is required as it is written in the Bible to make the team and to hear my name called at the podium when the day comes that I'm standing at the pearly gates.

  • THROWBACK THURSDAY - With the Super Bowl coming up, I recall a couple of times in late 1998 when some friends and me got to hang out at the Minnesota Vikings’ stadium when it wasn’t open to the general public. The father of a friend of mine worked at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. I roller-skated around the hallways and attempted field goals on the field. The best I got with the latter was a 20-yarder. The Metrodome was demolished after the 2013 NFL season.

    Daily Devotionals

    You’re Invited.

    January 19th, 2026

One of the most expensive wedding invitations ever sent came from former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson and Jennifer Conrad. Guests received an iPad in the mail that was programmed to give details about the ceremony. The unusual invites cost them $20 million.

Today’s text contains both an invitation and a request. The first “Come!” is actually in response to Christ’s statement in verse 12, “Behold, I am coming quickly.” The Spirit, who empowers us to live holy lives, and the bride, God’s people, long for Jesus to come and so reply, “Yes, please come!”

But this longing turns into an invitation for others to join the joyful union of Christ and His people, in a bond formed by their salvation that will never be broken. “And let him who hears” is anyone who reads the message of Revelation and responds; they are from “every nation, tribe, tongue, and people” (Revelation 14:6).

“And let him who thirsts come” reminds us of an invitation God made to Israel: “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat” (Isaiah 55:1). The invitation in today’s verse is to “him who thirsts”—that is, those who genuinely desire to follow God. To them, Christ’s promise is fulfilled: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

“Whoever desires,” John writes, “let him take the water of life freely.” Though the offer to receive is freely given, the recipient must “take” it. And the conditions for accepting the gift of salvation are to recognize one’s need and to repent (Revelation 2:5, 16, 21, 22; 3:3, 19) before the Lamb of God who “takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

The invitation to receive the gift of salvation is freely given, but it also cost the price of heaven’s most precious gift—the blood of Jesus Christ.

Dear God, thank you for Jesus, who released us from our fears and sins; let us find our rest in Him.

For Further Study: Matthew 7:24; John 7:37; Revelation 21:6
