How to Discern the Work of the Holy Spirit in the Heart
We can recognize the Holy Spirit's work in our hearts through three key signs:
First, through a living hope. Unlike false hope in worldly things, the Holy Spirit gives us hope for God's Kingdom, even if we have been deeply trapped in sin.
Second, through genuine love. When we love others with Christ's love, we don't focus on their lack of love for us. Instead, we grieve if they stop loving. We understand human weakness and aren't overly troubled by others' sins, knowing the Holy Spirit controls this weakness to protect our faith. The opposite of love is judgment. When we judge others, we act as if we are God, which stirs up fear and cruelty within us. This drives away the Holy Spirit, who is gentle and humble. He replaces our "heart of stone" with a "heart of flesh," freeing us from the fear of death.
Third, through the clarity of our motives. If our actions aim to please God, our intentions and thoughts will be clear. If evil is hidden within us, our purposes become confused. The Holy Spirit then awakens our conscience, reminds us of God's commands, and strengthens our will. If we are faithful, this resolve grows into steadfast perseverance.
