  • Good evening, brethren.
    1. Evening devotion for today.

    ED.i. *DAILY WALK WITH CHRIST*
    (COCIN DEVOTIONAL)

    *DATE:*
    THURSDAY 16TH JULY, 2026.

    *SUB-THEME:*
THE CONSEQUENCES OF REJECTING GOD'S GRACE

    *TOPIC:*
    REBELLION (II).

    *TEXT:*
    2 SAMUEL 15:7-15.
    7. At the end of four years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the Lord.
    8. While your servant was living at Geshur in Aram, I made this vow: ‘If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.
    9. The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.
    10. Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’ ”
    11. Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter.
    12. While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.
    13. A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.”
    14. Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.”
    15. The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.”

    *TOPIC:*
    REBELLION (II).

    *THE MESSAGE:*
Today's text shows how Absalom rebelled and plotted to overthrow his father, King David. He cunningly presented himself as a just leader and stole the hearts of Israel (v. 4-6). In conspiracy, he gathered a significant number of supporters to himself. He invited them to Hebron on the pretex of fulfilling a vow, but actually to be crowned king in place of his father. What a rebellion! It is despicable for one to plan a coup against their father. Indeed, the heart of man is desperately wicked. Self-centeredness has dominated the thoughts of many; such people rarely seek the welfare of others. Thus, our society is characterised by power tussles, rebellion, and killings. Alas, some children kill their parents to inherit their wealth or for money rituals. What a pity! Do not engage in any act of rebellion.

    *REFLECTION:*
    Rebellion is synonymous with witchcraft.

    *PRAYER:*
Lord, deliver me from the sin of rebellion, in Jesus' name. Amen.

    *MEMORY VERSE FOR THE MONTH:*
    HEBREWS 10:29.
How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished who has trampled on the Son of God, profaned the blood of the5 covenant that sanctified him, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

    *TODAY'S BIBLE READING PLAN:*
    ISAIAH 9-12.

ED.ii. The Devotionals are for Youth, Children & Adults:

    *HAVE FAITH IN GOD* 🫵🏽🏽‍🏽‍🏽🏽‍🏽🏽‍🏽🏽

    ```TEXT:JOHN 14:1-4```
    ```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me" (JOHN 14:1).*_

*The song, _"Have Faith in God",_ was written by Baylus Benjamin McKinney, (1886 - 1952). It was composed in 1934 during a revival meeting at the First Baptist Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma at a time that the United States was going through the _Great Depression._ McKinney was deeply moved by the people's struggles and sufferings and felt a strong desire to offer them a message of hope and encouragement through the song. He wrote:*

_*"Have faith in God when your pathway is lonely,*_
_*He sees and knows all the way you have trod;*_
_*Never alone are the least of His children;*_
_*Have faith in God, have faith in God."*_

_*"Have faith in God, He's on His throne;*_
_*Have faith in God, He watches o'er His own;*_
_*He cannot fail, He must prevail;*_
_*Have faith in God, have faith in God."*_

*The ministry of Jesus was nearing its end and in the preceding chapter, the Lord had indicated He was going to leave the disciples. The news of His departure must have jolted them and they must have felt unhappy. Jesus was reassuring them of His continuous presence even when they might not see Him any more physically. He wanted them to believe in God and trust Him at all times. He assured them of His return after going away to prepare a heavenly and eternal home for them.*

*Believers must heed the words of Jesus and be intentional in developing their faith in God and in His word. Economic hardship and political pressures are changing the situation, forcing the children of God to go through tougher times than ever before. Public ridicule of religion is taking its toll on many believers, causing their love to grow cold. Believers must never lose hope in the word of God and His plans for the end times. We must have confidence in the promises of the Lord Jesus to go and prepare a place of abode for faithful saints.*

*It takes faith in God to enjoy the blessings He has prepared for His children. We have nothing to lose by putting our confidence in the Lord and we have much more still to gain when we look with hope to His coming again to take us home. In these difficult times, it is more compelling to have faith in God.*

*An American poet, Carl Sandburg, wrote, "Time is the coin of your life... Only you can determine how it will be spent." The period of youthful life is a pleasant time, comparable to the delight you feel when you see the day begin with a bright sun, or when light comes up.*

*How you spend your youthful life matters a lot because just as the sun will not always be there, this beautiful moment will also pass. As daylight gives way to darkness, so will youthful time give way to old age. You must always remember this and not give yourself to just any desire of your heart, what appeals to your sight or immoral actions, and activities that are based on lack of self-restraint.*

*All those who spend their youthful days irresponsibly, thinking that they are enjoying themselves, will suffer the consequence in their old age. Besides, "know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment." The only way to escape these fearful outcomes is to repent and "put away evil" from all you do.*

    ```PROVERBS 4:20-24```
    ```Key Verse:``` _*"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23).*_

A gate is an opening used to allow or disallow entry into or out of an enclosed place. Through the gate, good things get in and bad things are prevented from coming in. Dave dashed out of the house to join other members of the family in the car going for a vacation. He forgot to close the gate and the door to the house. Thieves entered their house and stole valuable items before they returned.

Our eyes, ears, mouth, hands are like gates to our heart, which is a treasure house that controls the issues of life. The things we do with them have effect on our heart. We receive grace to overcome when we listen to, read and think on God's word. But such grace gets lost when dirty things get into the heart.

Watching bad contents on phones or TV corrupts. Reading bad books and magazines pollutes the heart. Listening to dirty songs corrupt your mind. *For you to live a life that pleases God, and prepare for the rapture, guard your heart. Keep the "gates" closed so that the treasure in it will remain pure and holy.*

    *THE EVER REASSURING TRUTH*

    *TEXT:* JOHN 14:1-4.

1.Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know

*Timeless Truth:*_"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee"_ (Hebrews 13:5).

    *INTRODUCTION*

The direct recorded words of Jesus Christ in the Bible are very few. Most of them are recorded in the Book of Matthew with repetitions in the synoptic gospels and John. The repetitions are for emphasis and to fill the gaps where other authors might have missed out. The words of great men and women with few words should be taken seriously as they, all things being equal, are void of trivialities. The words of Jesus Christ, though few, will never fall to the ground because they came right from His heart and they all have eternal value and implications. They are unchangeable, unbreakable, perfect and powerful that no wisdom, power or anybody can make them void since the time they were spoken and throughout eternity. Jesus Himself said, *"the scripture cannot be broken"*. In fact, it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than the Word of God be made void. *"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."* (Matthew 24:35). Jesus also said in Matthew 5:18 that *"For verily, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all be fulfilled"*. Believers therefore, should learn to have full trust in the words of Jesus, and by extension, the whole word of God, in any situation we find ourselves.

    *1. Antidote for Fear*

    a. The disciples were faced with the grim reality that Jesus would soon leave them and go to heaven. It was a reality that was difficult to accept because Jesus was everything to them when He was with them. He was their Teacher, Guide, Mentor, Provider of all their needs and He was also their Companion, Comfort and their purpose for living. In fact, He was their hope as they were anxiously waiting for the time He would rise up and take over the government of Israel, deliver the Jews from the oppression of Rome and reign as the Messiah. All that hope was tumbling right in their presence. More unfortunately, Jesus was their only Friend at all times. So, it should not surprise anybody that their hearts were really troubled. Jesus knew this and gave some few, but firm and faithful words of hope and reassurance. *"Let not your heart be troubled"*. He did not only exhort them, He told them the secret of peace in the midst of turbulence, joy in the midst or threats of sorrow and hope in the midst of hopelessness. What is the secret? So simple for everybody to obey *"Ye believe in God, believe also in me"*. It is this simple belief in Jesus that brought the greatest miracle that anyone can ever receive which is salvation. If simple faith in Christ can bring the greatest miracle, other needed miracles will be easier through simple and enduring faith in Christ.
    b. Many are living with high blood pressure, hypertension, fears, anxiety and various threats as a result of what their senses are telling them. Many think the solution is far away and some think there is no solution to their worries and anxieties. Jesus has the ever unfailing solution. *"Ye believe in God, believe also in me"*. Faith in Christ is greater than what the senses may be dictating. How do you believe in God you don't know? The disciples of Jesus had given their lives to Christ and as a result they had a revelation knowledge of Christ which made it possible for them to believe the words of Jesus. To believe in God is to believe His words. To believe in Christ is to surrender to Him and experience a life changing power. ? *"Ye believe in God, believe also in me"*. Perfect trust in the Word of God will never fail and go unfulfilled. When there is faith in Christ, there would be salvation, peace of God, release of the manifestation of the power of God to tackle all problems and challenges. Jesus confidently said, *"Ye believe in God, believe also in me"*.

    *Assignment*

Search out the promises of God that suit your challenges and start to read, regurgitate, repeat and reinforce them with your mouth.

    *2. Assurance of the Future*

    a. The thought, concern and fear of the future is one of the problems of this age. The person who steals and does many evils directly or indirectly thinks of a secured future as one of his motivations. Anxiety about tomorrow, which nobody is sure of, is one of the most silent killers and promoters of some evils and some deaths in all ages. Jesus knew this when He commanded that believers should not be anxious about tomorrow as to what to eat, drink etc. because Jesus will take care of them all if we believe in Christ's power to provide and lead us to do what will take care of our needs, both present and future. *"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself."* We are to live a day at a time. *"Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof"* (Matthew 6:34).
    b. Jesus directed their mind to another great secret of peace and joy on earth. That is the thought about the future and eternal abode of every believer. If anyone does not have the hope of heaven, he is the most miserable on earth. It is better he is never born. Jesus gave an eternal assurance to his disciples and by extension to all believers in Christ. *"In my Father's house are many mansions"*. They are many enough to give a mansion to each. *"If it were not so, I would have told you"*. Jesus put His integrity on the line for this promise. *"I go to prepare a place for you"*. The mansion is not left for angels or any other group of people to prepare. The hand that created the Universe, with all its incomparable beauty and mysteries, is the same hand that is building the believers' mansions in heaven. How beautiful heaven must be!

    *Question*

Do you have the hope of heaven? If not, why Not?

    *3. Ascension of the Faithful*

How would believers be able to access heaven? Through death or how? Jesus Christ has a very certain and sure answer. Heaven is not a matter of probability, but that of certainty. The same with how believers will access heaven. *"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again"*. This is a clear promise of His Second Coming or Second Advent. The word *"again"* shows that the way He came and went back to Heaven at the first Advent in a physical and visible way the same way He would come for the believers in the Second Advent, in this case the Rapture. In this case, only believers in Christ will see Him and be raptured. *"And receive you unto myself"*. This Advent He is talking about here is the version of Second Coming where He comes out of heaven as the host to welcome His special guest, and in this case, His bride to the home which is heaven. This is no doubt speaking strictly about the Rapture of the saints as later revealed in 1 Thessalonian 4:13-17. Believers in Christ will not enter heaven secretly, but will enter heaven triumphantly through the Rapture of the saints. *"That where I am, there ye may be also"*. The whole believers in Christ, who is the Bride of Christ, will be exactly where the bridegroom is. It is a divine marriage where the Bride and the Bridegroom live together and forever without divorce or separation.

    *Question*

Are you excited about going to heaven? If Not, why Not?

    *Prayer Points*

1.Lord, I praise and worship You because it is enough to put my trust and faith in You who will never fail .
2.Father, help and strengthen my faith to be focused on Christ and His Word with full trust and confidence .
3.Give me more hope of heaven .
4.Direct the heart and the faith of all Your children to faith in Your Word and the hope of heaven .

*HYMN:* When the trump of the Lord shall sound

    *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:*
    GENESIS 48-50.

    2. Evening Prayer for today.

    EP.i. Evening Prayer

A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh [but] in vain. ⏤ Psalm 127:1

As is the business of tailors to make clothes and of cobblers to mend shoes, so it is the business of Christians to pray. ⏤ Martin Luther

Our Father, before we lay down to sleep, we thank You for protecting and providing for us, and for all the blessings of this day. We committed ourselves to Your care this morning, and You haven’t forgotten us for even a moment. We thank You for the happiness we’ve shared at home today. Father, bless our family life and make it more tender and supportive. May our home become a holier place to live and grow. May all its influences be pure, uplifting, and enriching. Fill it with Your Holy Spirit, and then it will be like Heaven.

O Son of God, who lived in an earthly home in Nazareth for many years and often visited the home in Bethany, come and dwell in our home, and bless it with Your tender grace. May we sit at Your feet like Mary did, listening to Your word and learning from You. Then, in times of sorrow, You will come to comfort us. We also want to pour out our love to You like the woman who anointed Your feet with perfume. Come, dear Master, and be our constant guest. Stay with us all the time. Help us to make our home a place where You’ll want to dwell—a home of truth, pure feelings, gentle words, and thoughtful affection.

Now, as this day ends and we prepare for rest, we entrust our whole home to Your care. Forgive us all our sins. Accept the work we bring to You—only small pieces of what we intended to do, and stained by sin. Take it as it is and let Your blessing rest on it. Keep us through the night, and prepare us for tomorrow, whether we spend it on earth or in Heaven. We ask all this in Your name, O Lamb of God. Amen.

You must always remember this and not give yourself to just any desire of your heart, what appeals to your sight or immoral actions, and activities that are based on lack of self-restraint.* *All those who spend their youthful days irresponsibly, thinking that they are enjoying themselves, will suffer the consequence in their old age. Besides, "know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment." The only way to escape these fearful outcomes is to repent and "put away evil" from all you do.* 💬 ```QUOTE:``` _*Your youthful life matters.*_ 🏆 ```CHALLENGE:``` _*Spend your youthful life profitably.*_ 🙏🏽🙏🏽 ```PRAYER:``` _*Lord, grant me the wisdom to make good use of my youth.*_ Rejoice In Your Youth https://dailymanna.app// *TXD [THEXDEVOTIONALS] on Twitter* *#HigherEveryday16thJuly2026* *#GCK* *#WorshipNuggets* *#BibleNuggets* *#LeadershipNuggets* *#RevivalNuggets* *#CrusadeNuggets* https://www.youtube.com/[THEXDEVOTIONALS] [15/07, 7:46 pm] Pastor Attah: ```DEEPER CHRISTIAN LIFE MINISTRY``` _*(SINCERE MILK: Children Daily Devotional Guide 2⃣0⃣2⃣6️⃣)*_ 🙇🏼🙇🏼🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇🏼🙇‍♀️🙇🏼🙇‍♀️🙇🏼‍♂️ ```THURSDAY 16TH JULY, 2026``` *THE TREASURE HOUSE* 📓📖🎚️🫵🏽🙋🏽‍♂️🙋🏽‍♀️💓🛡️🏢🎁📦🧎🏽🧎🏽‍♀️🙏🏽 📜📜```PROVERBS 4:20-24```📜📜 🕔📚🖋️🚻😁🎼🏆🍉🪴🌈💻 🔑📖 ```Key Verse:``` _*"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23).*_ 📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 A gate is an opening used to allow or disallow entry into or out of an enclosed place. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know *Timeless Truth:*_"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee"_ (Hebrews 13:5). *INTRODUCTION* The direct recorded words of Jesus Christ in the Bible are very few. *1. Antidote for Fear* a. *Assignment* Search out the promises of God that suit your challenges and start to read, regurgitate, repeat and reinforce them with your mouth. *2. Assurance of the Future* a. *Question* Do you have the hope of heaven? If not, why Not? *3. Ascension of the Faithful* How would believers be able to access heaven? *Question* Are you excited about going to heaven? If Not, why Not? *Prayer Points* 1.Lord, I praise and worship You because it is enough to put my trust and faith in You who will never fail 🙏. 2.Father, help and strengthen my faith to be focused on Christ and His Word with full trust and confidence 🙏. 3.Give me more hope of heaven 🙏. 4.Direct the heart and the faith of all Your children to faith in Your Word and the hope of heaven 🙏. *HYMN:* When the trump of the Lord shall sound *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* GENESIS 48-50. 2. Evening Prayer for today. EP.i. Evening Prayer A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh [but] in vain. ⏤ Psalm 127:1 As is the business of tailors to make clothes and of cobblers to mend shoes, so it is the business of Christians to pray. ⏤ Martin Luther Our Father, before we lay down to sleep, we thank You for protecting and providing for us, and for all the blessings of this day. Amen. https://www.youdevotion.com/daily-prayer/miller/11/evening #taptapstudio #youdevotion.

  • KEEP AN ATTITUDE OF OBEDIENCE

The psalmist David said of God, “Sacrifice and offering
You do not desire, nor have You delight in them; You have
given me the capacity to hear and obey [Your law, a more
valuable service than] burnt offerings and sin offerings
[which] You do not require” (Psalm 40:6).
God delights in the atmosphere of our obedience.
Naturally, it doesn’t do God any good to talk to us if we
aren’t going to listen and obey.
For many years, I wanted God to talk to me, but I wanted
to pick and choose what to obey. I wanted to do what He
said if I thought it was a good idea. If I didn’t like what I
was hearing, then I would act like it wasn’t from God. God
has given us the capacity both to hear Him and to obey
Him. He does not require a higher sacrifice than
    obedience.
Some of what God says to you will be exciting. Some
things God tells you might not be so thrilling to hear. But
that doesn’t mean that what He tells you won’t work out
for good if you will just do it His way.
It is amazing how we can change our mind if we will just
let things settle for a few hours.
If God tells you that you were rude to a person, and He
wants you to apologize, it won’t work to answer back,
“Well, that person was rude to me too!” If you talk back
with excuses, you may have prayed, and even heard, but
    you haven’t obeyed.

Instead, go apologize if God tells you to do so. Take
yourself through the walk of obedience and say to that
person, “I was rude to you, and I’m sorry.” Now you have
obeyed. Now God’s anointing can flow through your life,
    because you are obedient.
I was moved by a story about a message from a pastor of a
very large church who spoke at a pastors conference in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hundreds of pastors came from all over
the nation to hear this man tell what he did to build his
church. He told them simply, “I pray, and I obey. I pray,
    and I obey.”
One of the ministers who attended this meeting expressed
to me his disappointment in the pastor’s message. He said,
“I spent all that money and went all that distance to hear
this world-renowned leader tell me how his ministry
grew to the point it is. For three hours, in various ways, he
said the same thing, ‘I pray. I obey. I pray. I obey. I pray. I
obey. I pray. I obey.’ I kept thinking, Surely there’s
    something else.”

Looking back over nearly three decades of walking with
God, I would have to agree that if I put into words the
simplest explanation for all the success we have enjoyed,
we too have learned to pray, hear from God, and then do
what God tells us to do. Over the years I have been
seeking God about the call on my life and pressing
forward in what I feel He has told me to do. The essence
of it all is that I have prayed, and I have obeyed. It has not
always been popular with everyone else, but I have
prayed, I have obeyed—and it has worked. God’s plan is
not hard; we make it hard.
If you want God’s will for your life, I can tell you the
recipe in its simplest form: Pray and obey. God has given
you the capacity to do both.
    Pray.
    And obey.
    Pray.
    And obey.
    Pray.
    And obey.
    Pray.
    And obey.
If you do that, before you know it, you will have stepped
right into God’s perfect plan for your life.

  • A Little Light Reading.
    The Savior And The Serpent.

    Doug Bachelor.

And as Moses lifted up the serpent
in the wilderness, even so must
the Son of Man be lifted up, that
    whoever believes in Him should
not perish but have eternal life
    (John 3:14, 15).
An Amazing Fact: It is estimated that between
30,000 and 40,000 people die from snakebites
each year, 75 percent of whom live in densely
populated India. The most deadly snakes in
    the savior &
    the serpent

The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 1 12/20/11 10:19 AM 2 The Savior & the Serpent
India are the cobra, Russell’s viper, and the
Indian krait. Burma has the highest snakebite
mortality rate, however, with 15.4 deaths per
100,000 people per year. Ironically, Australia
has some of the world’s most poisonous snakes,
but the average death toll there is only six
persons per year. In South America about
4,500 people die annually from contact with
the Fer-de-lance. None of the snakes already
mentioned are found in the United States,
where the chief offenders are coral snakes,
    copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes.
Four times in one year, John Fretwell’s
    air conditioning equipment com-
pany in Dallas was robbed. Fed up
with it, Fretwell went up to Oklahoma
for a snake hunt and brought back what
might be the ultimate in burglar protec-
    tion: seven diamondback rattlesnakes.
During business hours, he now displays
the snakes in the window of his business
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 2 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 3
office, labeled with a sign: DANGER:
    SNAKES BITE.
Before going home at night, he frees
the five-foot rattlers to glide around the
premises. In the morning, armed with a
hooked stick and a burlap bag, he rounds
them up. The seven rattlers seem to be
working like a charm to ward off burglars.
The key to his success is that most
people find these creatures among the
most revolting and terrorizing beasts on
Earth. My mother was so deathly afraid of
snakes that she would jump around and
scream even if she saw one on TV. My
brother and I would sometimes capitalize
on her phobia by placing a rubber snake
in her dresser drawer to enjoy a cruel
    laugh when she discovered it.
    Why Study Snakes?
Few people relish the idea of studying
snakes. It might not sound like a very ap-
    pealing subject, but these cold-blooded,
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 3 12/20/11 10:19 AM 4 The Savior & the Serpent
legless reptiles are mentioned in Scripture
    from Genesis to Revelation. The
Scriptures are an epic record of the battles
between our Savior and the serpent and,
ultimately, how Jesus wins the war. This is
why it is very profitable for us to compel
ourselves to consider these unusual crea-
tures, which are often used to symbolize
    the enemy.
    Throughout the Bible, the serpent
generally represents the devil. It was in
the form of a snake that the devil first
manifested himself to the human race
(Genesis 3:1). Through the snake in the
forbidden tree, our first parents were en-
ticed to sin, hence the symbol stuck all the
way to Revelation 20:2, where he is called
“the dragon, that serpent of old, who is
    the Devil and Satan.”
There can be some great benefits to
    understanding this slithery creature,
which has traits analogous to our enemy.
When I lived in the desert hills as a young
man, rattlesnakes were abundant. A basic
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 4 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 5
knowledge about their habits and behav-
ior helped me to avoid ever being bit, de-
    spite several close encounters.
The Bible says that “the serpent was
more cunning than any beast of the
field which the Lord God had made”
(Genesis 3:1). Perhaps this is why Jesus
commands us to be “wise as serpents and
harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). In
order to be as “wise as serpents,” we must
understand at least a little something
    about them.
    Master Counterfeiter
Snakes are the ultimate experts in cam-
    ouflage and counterfeits. Whether hiding
in the grass or entwined in the branches
of a tree, they are masters at blending into
the scenery to remain undetected. When
threatened, the harmless bull snake will
coil up and vibrate its tail in the dry leaves
to sound and look like its venomous cous-
    in, the rattler.
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 5 12/20/11 10:19 AM 6 The Savior & the Serpent
Satan, too, is a clever counterfeiter.
In Revelation 12:9 he is called “that ser-
pent of old...who deceives the whole
world.” For every truth of God, Satan has
a convincing counterfeit. He has counter-
feit baptisms, a counterfeit Holy Spirit,
a counterfeit of speaking in tongues, a
counterfeit Sabbath, and even a counter-
    feit for love.
In the Exodus story, the Pharaoh’s ma-
    gicians were able—to a point—to coun-
terfeit the power and miracles of God.
So Moses and Aaron went in to
Pharaoh … just as the Lord com-
    manded. And Aaron cast down
his rod before Pharaoh and before
his servants, and it became a ser-
pent. But Pharaoh also called the
wise men and the sorcerers; so the
magicians of Egypt, they also did
in like manner with their enchant-
ments. For every man threw down
his rod, and they became serpents.
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 6 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 7
But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their
    rods (Exodus 7:10–12).
Likewise, Satan is most dangerous and
effective when he is imitating God’s mir-
acles and messengers. “And no wonder!
For Satan himself transforms himself into
an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).
    Flying Dragons
In the Scriptures, the devil is called
both a serpent and a dragon. Among
many cultures around the world, stories
    and legends abound regarding flying
dragons. These images can be frequently
seen in their ancient carvings and art.
Legends are generally rooted in some
element of truth, and this appears to be the
    case with flying dragons. Paleontologists
    have found amazing fossil evidence
all over the globe of giant flying rep-
tiles called pterosaurs, or “winged liz-
    ards.” Pterosaurs were flying reptiles,
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 7 12/20/11 10:19 AM 8 The Savior & the Serpent
some with a wingspan of nearly 40 feet.
(That’s about the size of a small Cessna
airplane!) They appear to be the largest
flying animals that ever lived on Earth.
They had lightly-built, hollow bones but
    300-pound bodies. By comparison, the
heaviest bird alive today, a Kori Bustard, is
    only 42 pounds.
The pterosaur had a long, thin beak
with toothless jaws. The neck was 10
feet long, and the legs were more than
seven feet. To someone watching from
the ground, the long legs trailing behind
a flying pterosaur might have looked
like a pointed tail. The pterosaur had a
large brain and big eyes, and a fur-like
fuzz might have even covered some of its
body. We can’t tell from the bones, but
it is also possible that some of these ex-
tinct “dragons” were red. It had a bony
crest on its head that some think acted as
a rudder for flying. Other scientists have
surmised that the chambers in the skull
could have contained chemicals, like the

bombardier beetle, that were mixed and
expelled, spraying a fiery liquid from its
mouth. Some of these creatures might
have survived long after the Flood. The
    Greek historian Herodotus wrote about
“winged serpents” living in Arabia in the
    fifth century before Christ.
According to the Bible, at least one
dragon has managed to survive much lon-
ger than that! “He laid hold of the dragon,
that serpent of old, who is the Devil and
Satan, and bound him for a thousand
    years” (Revelation 20:2).
The Bible itself alludes to the existence
of flying serpents. One prophecy states,
“Do not rejoice, all you of Philistia, be-
    cause the rod that struck you is broken;
for out of the serpent’s roots will come
forth a viper, and its offspring will be a fi-
    ery flying serpent” (Isaiah 14:29).
Genesis 3:14 even explains why we do
not see flying snakes today. “So the Lord
God said to the serpent: ‘Because you
have done this, you are cursed more than
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 9 12/20/11 10:19 AM 10 The Savior & the Serpent
all cattle, and more than every beast of the
field; on your belly you shall go, and you
shall eat dust all the days of your life.’ ”
If the serpent was cursed to go upon his
belly after he tempted Eve, it is obvious
that before the curse, he propelled him-
    self differently.
Satan is called “the prince of the power
of the air, the spirit who now works in the
    sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2).
Just as the serpent was grounded by the
curse, the fallen angel Lucifer also had
his wings clipped when he was cast to
    the earth.
    Satan and the Sword
The first question found in Scripture is
actually posed by the serpent, who sought
to discredit God’s words. He asked Eve,
    “Hath God said?” (Genesis 3:1).
From that first insidious query to the
present, Satan has been ever seeking to
cast doubt on the Word of God in order
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 10 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 11
to undermine the faith of God’s chil-
dren. Sin, suffering, and death entered
the world after Satan succeeded in lead-
ing our first parents to disbelieve God’s
words. Planting seeds of doubt regarding
    the dependability of Scripture remains
    the devil’s primary war tactic.
Jesus explained this truth in His par-
able of the sower. “Behold, a sower went
out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed
fell by the wayside; and the birds came and
    devoured them” (Matthew 13:3,4). Later,
explaining the parable, Jesus says, “When
anyone hears the word of the kingdom,
and does not understand it, then the wick-
ed one comes and snatches away what was
sown in his heart. This is he who received
seed by the wayside” (Matthew 13:19).
However, victory comes to God’s chil-
dren when they embrace and believe the
powerful promises in the Word, “by which
Heidi Smith been given to us exceedingly great
and precious promises, that through these
you may be partakers of the divine nature,
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 11 12/20/11 10:19 AM 12 The Savior & the Serpent
having escaped the corruption that is in
the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:4).
When Jesus did combat with the arch
villain in the wilderness of temptation, He
deflected every assault with a word from
    Scripture. Indeed, the serpent trembles
when God’s people take hold of the living
sword of His Word! (See Hebrews 4:12.)
    The Snake and the Seed
Genesis 3:14, 15 is where we find the
first prophecy recorded in the Bible, and
this prediction tells of the ongoing battle
    that would exist throughout mankind’s
history between the woman (the church)
and the serpent (Satan). This passage
also promises the ultimate victory of the
woman’s seed (the coming Savior), who
would crush the head of the snake.
Verse 15 says, “And I will put enmity
between you and the woman, and be-
tween your seed and her Seed; He shall
bruise your head, and you shall bruise
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 12 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 13
His heel.” The seed of the woman is, of
    course, Jesus.
Now a great sign appeared in heav-
en: a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet, and
on her head a garland of twelve
stars. Then being with child, she
cried out in labor and in pain to give
    birth. And another sign appeared
in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red
dragon having seven heads and ten
horns, and seven diadems on his
heads. His tail drew a third of the
stars of heaven and threw them to
the earth. And the dragon stood
before the woman who was ready
to give birth, to devour her Child
as soon as it was born. She bore a
male Child who was to rule all na-
tions with a rod of iron. And her
Child was caught up to God and
    His throne (Revelation 12:1–5).
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 13 12/20/11 10:19 AM 14 The Savior & the Serpent
Notice in the Genesis prophecy that
the serpent bites the heel of the woman’s
seed, not the toe. The heel is the back of
the foot, the lowest part of the body. Satan
gets us from behind, when we are at our
lowest point. Likewise, he came to Jesus
when He was weak and tired after 40 days
    of fasting.
The good news is that Satan only man-
ages to bruise the heel of Christ and the
church; the church continues to limp
along, so to speak. On the other hand, the
serpent receives a mortal wound to the
head, promising the ultimate victory of
    Jesus over the devil.
    Power Over Serpents
    When the Lord commissioned Moses
to return to Egypt and lead His people to
freedom, at first the great leader was reluc-
tant. Then the Lord gave Moses a strange
    command concerning his shepherd’s rod.
“And He said, ‘Cast it on the ground.’ So
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 14 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 15
he cast it on the ground, and it became a
serpent; and Moses fled from it. Then the
Lord said to Moses, ‘Reach out your hand
and take it by the tail’ (and he reached out
his hand and caught it, and it became a
rod in his hand)” (Exodus 4:3, 4).
A rod in the Bible is a symbol of
    power (Revelation 12:5) and protection
(Psalm 23:4). When Moses’ rod turned
into a serpent, it signaled that God would
give him power over and protection from
the forces of evil as he ventured into the
snake pit of Pharaoh’s palace. This same
power is promised to all of God’s children
who seek to work with Jesus to liberate
    others from slavery to Satan.
Luke 10:19 states, “Behold, I give you
the authority to trample on serpents and
scorpions, and over all the power of the
enemy, and nothing shall by any means
hurt you.” And Psalm 91:13 declares, “You
shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall
    trample underfoot.”
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 15 12/20/11 10:19 AM 16 The Savior & the Serpent
    Don’t Play With Snakes
A rattlesnake only two minutes old can
strike effectively. During a family picnic,
    a two-year-old girl discovered a brood of
    baby rattlesnakes. The unsuspecting child
began to play with what she thought were
merely pretty worms, until she had been
    repeatedly bitten beyond hope.
Likewise, some people feel there is no
harm in toying with the devil. Or they be-
lieve that little sins are harmless and in-
consequential, but these “baby” sins often
prove more fatal in the long run than the
    more robust transgressions.
While we should never tempt the devil,
we also should not fear him. This power
over evil is what Jesus was talking about
when He said, “And these signs will fol-
low those who believe … they will take up
    serpents” (Mark 16:17, 18).
    Some misguided pastors have inter-
preted this passage to mean that Christians
should double as snake charmers and
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 16 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 17
prove their faith by collecting and han-
dling rattlesnakes or other venomous vi-
pers. For obvious reasons, the member-
ship in these congregations has always
remained small. But the New Testament
account of Paul’s shipwreck reveals how
    to correctly interpret this passage:
Now when they had escaped, they
then found out that the island
was called Malta. And the natives
    showed us unusual kindness; for
they kindled a fire and made us all
welcome, because of the rain that
was falling and because of the cold.
But when Paul had gathered a bun-
dle of sticks and laid them on the
fire, a viper came out because of the
heat, and fastened on his hand. So
when the natives saw the creature
hanging from his hand, they said to
one another, “No doubt this man is
a murderer, whom, though he has
escaped the sea, yet justice does not
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 17 12/20/11 10:19 AM 18 The Savior & the Serpent
allow to live.” But he shook off the
creature into the fire and suffered
no harm. However, they were ex-
pecting that he would swell up or
suddenly fall down dead. But after
they had looked for a long time and
saw no harm come to him, they
changed their minds and said that
he was a god (Acts 28:1–6).
Notice that Paul did not go looking
for this snake, but after it bit him he took
it up and hurled it into the fire. Just as
God saved Paul from the venom of that
serpent, He will save us from the poison
of sin. However, we are never to delib-
erately seek out snakes to flirt with di-
saster. That would be tempting the Lord
    (Matthew 4:7).
    Most Famous Verse
Probably one of the most well-known,
beloved, and memorized verses in the
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 18 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 19
Bible is John 3:16. But if you were to ask
the average Christian what the two verses
are that precede John 3:16, I would ven-
ture to guess not one person in 50 could
quote them. Yet that immortal verse we
all know is actually the continuation of a
thought begun in the preceding two vers-
es. Here they are all together:
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in
the wilderness, even so must the Son
of man be lifted up: that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish,
but have eternal life. For God so loved
the world, that he gave his only be-
    gotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have
    everlasting life (John 3:14–16 KJV).
    These three verses together encap-
sulate the entire great controversy be-
tween the serpent and the Lord. Let’s look
back at the original story to which Jesus
    was alluding:
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 19 12/20/11 10:19 AM 20 The Savior & the Serpent
And the people spoke against God
and against Moses: “Why have you
brought us up out of Egypt to die
in the wilderness? For there is no
food and no water, and our soul
loathes this worthless bread.” So the
Lord sent fiery serpents among the
people, and they bit the people; and
many of the people of Israel died
    (Numbers 21:5, 6).
Remember that sin first entered the
world when the serpent succeeded in
tempting our first parents to doubt God’s
Word. Like Adam and Eve, the chil-
dren of Israel also became dissatisfied
with the food God was providing them
and wanted something more. “Nor let
us tempt Christ, as some of them also
tempted, and were destroyed by serpents”
    (1 Corinthians 10:9).
In this story, after the children of Israel
rejected God’s bread (a symbol for Jesus
and the Word), the serpents bit them. It is
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 20 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 21
the Word of God that keeps people from
sin (Psalm 119:11). Let’s read on:
    Therefore the people came to
Moses, and said, “We have sinned,
for we have spoken against the
Lord and against you; pray to the
Lord that He take away the ser-
pents from us.” So Moses prayed
for the people. Then the Lord said
to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent,
and set it on a pole; and it shall be
that everyone who is bitten, when
he looks at it, shall live.” So Moses
made a bronze serpent, and put it
on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent
had bitten anyone, when he looked
at the bronze serpent, he lived
    (Numbers 21:7–9).
The Lord did not immediately take
away the serpents, but He provided a
remedy. Likewise, the devil might still
be in our world, but God has provided
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 21 12/20/11 10:19 AM 22 The Savior & the Serpent
healing for sin as we behold “the Lamb of
God who takes away the sin of the world”
    (John 1:29).
    Snake on a Stick
But why did God ask Moses to do this,
and what did it mean? For this nation of
shepherds, the serpent lifted on a pole
served as a vivid symbol that they all well
understood. Snakes are a deadly menace
to sheep. A dog might get bit by a rattle-
snake yet survive without special treat-
ment, but sheep are much more fragile.
This is one of the reasons why shepherds
    carried a rod.
When I lived in the desert wilderness,
I had a snake stick that served a couple of
purposes. If I found a venomous intrud-
er in my cave, I would club it to “bruise
his head.” But a mortally wounded snake
still might continue to thrash and writhe
for hours. So rather than grab it with my
hand, I would lift it up with the rod to
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 22 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 23
move it far away from my premises or
    a trail.
A snake on a stick is a vivid sym-
bol of a defeated serpent. Beyond this,
there is a much richer prophetic signifi-
cance to this symbol. Christian author
    E.G. White writes:
All who have ever lived upon the
earth have felt the deadly sting of
‘that old serpent, called the devil,
    and Satan.’ Revelation 12:9. The
fatal effects of sin can be removed
only by the provision that God has
made. The Israelites saved their lives
by looking upon the uplifted ser-
pent. That look implied faith. They
    lived because they believed God’s
word, and trusted in the means
provided for their recovery. So the
sinner may look to Christ, and live.
    He receives pardon through faith
in the atoning sacrifice. Unlike the
inert and lifeless symbol, Christ has
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 23 12/20/11 10:19 AM 24 The Savior & the Serpent
power and virtue in Himself to heal
    the repenting sinner (Patriarchs
    and Prophets, p. 431).
She also writes, “The people well knew
that in itself the serpent had no power to
help them. It was a symbol of Christ. As
the image made in the likeness of the de-
stroying serpents was lifted up for their
healing, so One made ‘in the likeness of
sinful flesh’ was to be their Redeemer”
(The Desire of Ages, p. 174).
Jesus said, “And I, if I am lifted up from
the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself ”
(John 12:32). It is by looking to Jesus on
the cross that we are drawn by His love for
us. By gazing in faith at our Redeemer’s
sacrifice, we are saved from the sting of
    the serpent.
Again, God did not take away the
serpents but instead provided a remedy.
    This world is something of a snake pit;
as long as we are in this world, we will
have to contend with the devil. However,
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 24 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 25
God has provided an abundance of anti-
venom in the blood of Jesus to save us
from the viper’s bite! When Jesus was on
the cross, although His heel was pain-
fully bruised, the serpent’s head was
    mortally crushed.
    Good Luck Charms
God did not intend for the bronze ser-
pent Moses forged and elevated on the
stick to become an idol. Nevertheless, this
bronze relic somehow managed to sur-
vive all the wanderings and battles of the
Israelites for more than 700 years. Most
of the surrounding pagan Canaanite na-
tions worshiped serpents as gods of fer-
tility and mystical power. Over time, the
Israelites began to imitate their neighbors
and to treat this symbol of God’s forgive-
ness as a deity in and of itself.
    Pelumi Hezekiah removed the high
places and broke the sacred pillars,
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 25 12/20/11 10:19 AM 26 The Savior & the Serpent
cut down the wooden image and
broke in pieces the bronze serpent
that Moses had made; for until
those days the children of Israel
burned incense to it, and called it
    Nehushtan [something made of
    copper] (2 Kings 18:4).
    Like the ancient Israelites, millions
around the world today are inadver-
    tently worshiping the serpent thinking
they are worshiping the Lord. They have
slowly and unwittingly been sucked into
    base idolatry.
    Indeed, many Christians have done
the same thing with the symbol of the
cross as the ancient Israelites did with the
bronze serpent. But as the Israelites were
not to worship the serpent on the pole,
we are not to bow down to the cross.
Neither are we commanded anywhere in
Scripture to make the sign of the cross
or to wear a cross on our persons. While
the symbol of the cross has evolved into
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 26 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 27
a logo for Christianity, there is no mys-
tical power or virtue in praying to this
shape of the ancient Roman implement
    of torture.
When Jesus said to His disciples, “If
anyone desires to come after Me, let him
deny himself, and take up his cross, and
follow Me,” He was commanding His fol-
lowers to bear the cross, not to wear the
    cross (Matthew 16:24).
Revelation speaks of being saved not
by the cross, but by the blood of Jesus. It
was the cross as a demonstration of Jesus’
love and sacrifice that Paul and the dis-
ciples exalted, not the revolting instru-
ment itself. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking
unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our
faith, who for the joy that was set before
Him endured the cross, despising the
shame, and has sat down at the right hand
of the throne of God.” The redemption
of the cross is what should be the focus
    of Christians.

    The Cup of Sin
In the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul,
Turkey, there rests a very precious goblet.
In the center of the inside of that goblet
is a gold serpent. It has ruby eyes and
diamond fangs; its mouth is open, ap-
pearing ready to strike. When the goblet
is filled with wine, the red liquid covers
the snake. As the wine is drunk, suddenly
the serpent with its menacing appearance
    is revealed.
Jesus, nearing the time of His cruci-
fixion, shrank from the thought of sin
and separation from the Father when He
prayed, “O My Father, if it is possible, let
this cup pass from Me” (Matthew 26:39).
Yet humbling Himself, He drank the cup
of sin down to the dregs. “Nevertheless,
not as I will, but as You will.” At Calvary,
the serpent, which had been lingering
through it all, struck with all of his dia-
bolical vengeance. The intensity of evil …
    Jesus bore it all!
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 28 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 29
    Defeated Foe
Some have wondered, “If Satan was
defeated by Jesus on the cross, then why
do we still see and feel so much evidence
of his evil works?” The devil knows he
was defeated at the cross, but he is crazed
with pride and anger. In order to inflict
as much heartache on God as possible, he
continues to fight tenaciously, wanting to
take down with him as many human be-
    ings as possible.
Revelation 12:12 declares, “Woe to the
inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For
the devil has come down to you, having
great wrath, because he knows that he
has a short time.” Satan is now thrash-
ing about wildly in his final death throes,
striking any and all within his reach.
However, the Bible promises that, ul-
timately, Satan and his angels will be cast
into the lake of fire. This also holds true
for those people who follow the devil.
“Serpents, brood of vipers! How can
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 29 12/20/11 10:19 AM 30 The Savior & the Serpent
you escape the condemnation of hell?”
    (Matthew 23:33).
The good news is that in heaven, we
will no longer need to walk through the
woods in fear. Isaiah 11:8, 9 describes a
    paradise without harmful snakes:
The nursing child shall play by the
cobra’s hole, and the weaned child
shall put his hand in the viper’s den.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in
all My holy mountain, for the earth
shall be full of the knowledge of the
Lord as the waters cover the sea.
    In the Father’s Hands
A father and his eight-year-old daugh-
ter were driving down a busy highway one
    balmy summer afternoon. Suddenly the
little girl screamed and covered her head.
A honeybee had flown in one of the open
windows and was buzzing angrily around
the cab looking for a way out.
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 30 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 31
What so terrified the child was that,
after having nearly died from them once
before, she knew she was deathly allergic
to bee stings. The father reached for the
bee as it was buzzing, cornered between
the windshield and the dashboard. The
    determined little creature escaped his
grasp and now looked even more furious.
The young girl pled, “Daddy! He’s going
    to sting me! I’ll die!”
The father tried to calm her. “Don’t
worry, sweetie. He can’t hurt you now.”
    “But, Daddy, he’s getting closer!”
Then the father held out his right hand
to his frightened daughter; there she saw
a little stinger in his palm. “I took the
stinger so he can’t hurt you now. All he
can do is buzz around till he dies.”
We can also rest assured Satan is
doomed. Jesus has taken the venom of the
enemy into His own body that we might
be saved. Yes, the devil might still be
rampaging through this world, but God’s
children don’t need to be frightened. Jesus
The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 31 12/20/11 10:19 AM 32 The Savior & the Serpent
promised, “You are of God, little children,
and have overcome them, because He
who is in you is greater than he who is in
    the world” (1 John 4:4).
A Little Light Reading. The Savior And The Serpent. Doug Bachelor. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:14, 15). An Amazing Fact: It is estimated that between 30,000 and 40,000 people die from snakebites each year, 75 percent of whom live in densely populated India. The most deadly snakes in the savior & the serpent by doug batchelor The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 1 12/20/11 10:19 AM 2 The Savior & the Serpent India are the cobra, Russell’s viper, and the Indian krait. Burma has the highest snakebite mortality rate, however, with 15.4 deaths per 100,000 people per year. Ironically, Australia has some of the world’s most poisonous snakes, but the average death toll there is only six persons per year. In South America about 4,500 people die annually from contact with the Fer-de-lance. None of the snakes already mentioned are found in the United States, where the chief offenders are coral snakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes. Four times in one year, John Fretwell’s air conditioning equipment com- pany in Dallas was robbed. Fed up with it, Fretwell went up to Oklahoma for a snake hunt and brought back what might be the ultimate in burglar protec- tion: seven diamondback rattlesnakes. During business hours, he now displays the snakes in the window of his business The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 2 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 3 office, labeled with a sign: DANGER: SNAKES BITE. Before going home at night, he frees the five-foot rattlers to glide around the premises. In the morning, armed with a hooked stick and a burlap bag, he rounds them up. The seven rattlers seem to be working like a charm to ward off burglars. The key to his success is that most people find these creatures among the most revolting and terrorizing beasts on Earth. My mother was so deathly afraid of snakes that she would jump around and scream even if she saw one on TV. My brother and I would sometimes capitalize on her phobia by placing a rubber snake in her dresser drawer to enjoy a cruel laugh when she discovered it. Why Study Snakes? Few people relish the idea of studying snakes. It might not sound like a very ap- pealing subject, but these cold-blooded, The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 3 12/20/11 10:19 AM 4 The Savior & the Serpent legless reptiles are mentioned in Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. The Scriptures are an epic record of the battles between our Savior and the serpent and, ultimately, how Jesus wins the war. This is why it is very profitable for us to compel ourselves to consider these unusual crea- tures, which are often used to symbolize the enemy. Throughout the Bible, the serpent generally represents the devil. It was in the form of a snake that the devil first manifested himself to the human race (Genesis 3:1). Through the snake in the forbidden tree, our first parents were en- ticed to sin, hence the symbol stuck all the way to Revelation 20:2, where he is called “the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan.” There can be some great benefits to understanding this slithery creature, which has traits analogous to our enemy. When I lived in the desert hills as a young man, rattlesnakes were abundant. A basic The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 4 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 5 knowledge about their habits and behav- ior helped me to avoid ever being bit, de- spite several close encounters. The Bible says that “the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made” (Genesis 3:1). Perhaps this is why Jesus commands us to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). In order to be as “wise as serpents,” we must understand at least a little something about them. Master Counterfeiter Snakes are the ultimate experts in cam- ouflage and counterfeits. Whether hiding in the grass or entwined in the branches of a tree, they are masters at blending into the scenery to remain undetected. When threatened, the harmless bull snake will coil up and vibrate its tail in the dry leaves to sound and look like its venomous cous- in, the rattler. The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 5 12/20/11 10:19 AM 6 The Savior & the Serpent Satan, too, is a clever counterfeiter. In Revelation 12:9 he is called “that ser- pent of old...who deceives the whole world.” For every truth of God, Satan has a convincing counterfeit. He has counter- feit baptisms, a counterfeit Holy Spirit, a counterfeit of speaking in tongues, a counterfeit Sabbath, and even a counter- feit for love. In the Exodus story, the Pharaoh’s ma- gicians were able—to a point—to coun- terfeit the power and miracles of God. So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh … just as the Lord com- manded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a ser- pent. But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchant- ments. For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 6 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 7 But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods (Exodus 7:10–12). Likewise, Satan is most dangerous and effective when he is imitating God’s mir- acles and messengers. “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). Flying Dragons In the Scriptures, the devil is called both a serpent and a dragon. Among many cultures around the world, stories and legends abound regarding flying dragons. These images can be frequently seen in their ancient carvings and art. Legends are generally rooted in some element of truth, and this appears to be the case with flying dragons. Paleontologists have found amazing fossil evidence all over the globe of giant flying rep- tiles called pterosaurs, or “winged liz- ards.” Pterosaurs were flying reptiles, The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 7 12/20/11 10:19 AM 8 The Savior & the Serpent some with a wingspan of nearly 40 feet. (That’s about the size of a small Cessna airplane!) They appear to be the largest flying animals that ever lived on Earth. They had lightly-built, hollow bones but 300-pound bodies. By comparison, the heaviest bird alive today, a Kori Bustard, is only 42 pounds. The pterosaur had a long, thin beak with toothless jaws. The neck was 10 feet long, and the legs were more than seven feet. To someone watching from the ground, the long legs trailing behind a flying pterosaur might have looked like a pointed tail. The pterosaur had a large brain and big eyes, and a fur-like fuzz might have even covered some of its body. We can’t tell from the bones, but it is also possible that some of these ex- tinct “dragons” were red. It had a bony crest on its head that some think acted as a rudder for flying. Other scientists have surmised that the chambers in the skull could have contained chemicals, like the The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 8 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 9 bombardier beetle, that were mixed and expelled, spraying a fiery liquid from its mouth. Some of these creatures might have survived long after the Flood. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote about “winged serpents” living in Arabia in the fifth century before Christ. According to the Bible, at least one dragon has managed to survive much lon- ger than that! “He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:2). The Bible itself alludes to the existence of flying serpents. One prophecy states, “Do not rejoice, all you of Philistia, be- cause the rod that struck you is broken; for out of the serpent’s roots will come forth a viper, and its offspring will be a fi- ery flying serpent” (Isaiah 14:29). Genesis 3:14 even explains why we do not see flying snakes today. “So the Lord God said to the serpent: ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed more than The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 9 12/20/11 10:19 AM 10 The Savior & the Serpent all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.’ ” If the serpent was cursed to go upon his belly after he tempted Eve, it is obvious that before the curse, he propelled him- self differently. Satan is called “the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). Just as the serpent was grounded by the curse, the fallen angel Lucifer also had his wings clipped when he was cast to the earth. Satan and the Sword The first question found in Scripture is actually posed by the serpent, who sought to discredit God’s words. He asked Eve, “Hath God said?” (Genesis 3:1). From that first insidious query to the present, Satan has been ever seeking to cast doubt on the Word of God in order The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 10 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 11 to undermine the faith of God’s chil- dren. Sin, suffering, and death entered the world after Satan succeeded in lead- ing our first parents to disbelieve God’s words. Planting seeds of doubt regarding the dependability of Scripture remains the devil’s primary war tactic. Jesus explained this truth in His par- able of the sower. “Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them” (Matthew 13:3,4). Later, explaining the parable, Jesus says, “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wick- ed one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside” (Matthew 13:19). However, victory comes to God’s chil- dren when they embrace and believe the powerful promises in the Word, “by which [has] been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 11 12/20/11 10:19 AM 12 The Savior & the Serpent having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:4). When Jesus did combat with the arch villain in the wilderness of temptation, He deflected every assault with a word from Scripture. Indeed, the serpent trembles when God’s people take hold of the living sword of His Word! (See Hebrews 4:12.) The Snake and the Seed Genesis 3:14, 15 is where we find the first prophecy recorded in the Bible, and this prediction tells of the ongoing battle that would exist throughout mankind’s history between the woman (the church) and the serpent (Satan). This passage also promises the ultimate victory of the woman’s seed (the coming Savior), who would crush the head of the snake. Verse 15 says, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and be- tween your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 12 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 13 His heel.” The seed of the woman is, of course, Jesus. Now a great sign appeared in heav- en: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child who was to rule all na- tions with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne (Revelation 12:1–5). The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 13 12/20/11 10:19 AM 14 The Savior & the Serpent Notice in the Genesis prophecy that the serpent bites the heel of the woman’s seed, not the toe. The heel is the back of the foot, the lowest part of the body. Satan gets us from behind, when we are at our lowest point. Likewise, he came to Jesus when He was weak and tired after 40 days of fasting. The good news is that Satan only man- ages to bruise the heel of Christ and the church; the church continues to limp along, so to speak. On the other hand, the serpent receives a mortal wound to the head, promising the ultimate victory of Jesus over the devil. Power Over Serpents When the Lord commissioned Moses to return to Egypt and lead His people to freedom, at first the great leader was reluc- tant. Then the Lord gave Moses a strange command concerning his shepherd’s rod. “And He said, ‘Cast it on the ground.’ So The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 14 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 15 he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Reach out your hand and take it by the tail’ (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand)” (Exodus 4:3, 4). A rod in the Bible is a symbol of power (Revelation 12:5) and protection (Psalm 23:4). When Moses’ rod turned into a serpent, it signaled that God would give him power over and protection from the forces of evil as he ventured into the snake pit of Pharaoh’s palace. This same power is promised to all of God’s children who seek to work with Jesus to liberate others from slavery to Satan. Luke 10:19 states, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” And Psalm 91:13 declares, “You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.” The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 15 12/20/11 10:19 AM 16 The Savior & the Serpent Don’t Play With Snakes A rattlesnake only two minutes old can strike effectively. During a family picnic, a two-year-old girl discovered a brood of baby rattlesnakes. The unsuspecting child began to play with what she thought were merely pretty worms, until she had been repeatedly bitten beyond hope. Likewise, some people feel there is no harm in toying with the devil. Or they be- lieve that little sins are harmless and in- consequential, but these “baby” sins often prove more fatal in the long run than the more robust transgressions. While we should never tempt the devil, we also should not fear him. This power over evil is what Jesus was talking about when He said, “And these signs will fol- low those who believe … they will take up serpents” (Mark 16:17, 18). Some misguided pastors have inter- preted this passage to mean that Christians should double as snake charmers and The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 16 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 17 prove their faith by collecting and han- dling rattlesnakes or other venomous vi- pers. For obvious reasons, the member- ship in these congregations has always remained small. But the New Testament account of Paul’s shipwreck reveals how to correctly interpret this passage: Now when they had escaped, they then found out that the island was called Malta. And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold. But when Paul had gathered a bun- dle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand. So when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 17 12/20/11 10:19 AM 18 The Savior & the Serpent allow to live.” But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. However, they were ex- pecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god (Acts 28:1–6). Notice that Paul did not go looking for this snake, but after it bit him he took it up and hurled it into the fire. Just as God saved Paul from the venom of that serpent, He will save us from the poison of sin. However, we are never to delib- erately seek out snakes to flirt with di- saster. That would be tempting the Lord (Matthew 4:7). Most Famous Verse Probably one of the most well-known, beloved, and memorized verses in the The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 18 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 19 Bible is John 3:16. But if you were to ask the average Christian what the two verses are that precede John 3:16, I would ven- ture to guess not one person in 50 could quote them. Yet that immortal verse we all know is actually the continuation of a thought begun in the preceding two vers- es. Here they are all together: And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only be- gotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:14–16 KJV). These three verses together encap- sulate the entire great controversy be- tween the serpent and the Lord. Let’s look back at the original story to which Jesus was alluding: The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 19 12/20/11 10:19 AM 20 The Savior & the Serpent And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died (Numbers 21:5, 6). Remember that sin first entered the world when the serpent succeeded in tempting our first parents to doubt God’s Word. Like Adam and Eve, the chil- dren of Israel also became dissatisfied with the food God was providing them and wanted something more. “Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents” (1 Corinthians 10:9). In this story, after the children of Israel rejected God’s bread (a symbol for Jesus and the Word), the serpents bit them. It is The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 20 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 21 the Word of God that keeps people from sin (Psalm 119:11). Let’s read on: Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the ser- pents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived (Numbers 21:7–9). The Lord did not immediately take away the serpents, but He provided a remedy. Likewise, the devil might still be in our world, but God has provided The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 21 12/20/11 10:19 AM 22 The Savior & the Serpent healing for sin as we behold “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Snake on a Stick But why did God ask Moses to do this, and what did it mean? For this nation of shepherds, the serpent lifted on a pole served as a vivid symbol that they all well understood. Snakes are a deadly menace to sheep. A dog might get bit by a rattle- snake yet survive without special treat- ment, but sheep are much more fragile. This is one of the reasons why shepherds carried a rod. When I lived in the desert wilderness, I had a snake stick that served a couple of purposes. If I found a venomous intrud- er in my cave, I would club it to “bruise his head.” But a mortally wounded snake still might continue to thrash and writhe for hours. So rather than grab it with my hand, I would lift it up with the rod to The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 22 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 23 move it far away from my premises or a trail. A snake on a stick is a vivid sym- bol of a defeated serpent. Beyond this, there is a much richer prophetic signifi- cance to this symbol. Christian author E.G. White writes: All who have ever lived upon the earth have felt the deadly sting of ‘that old serpent, called the devil, and Satan.’ Revelation 12:9. The fatal effects of sin can be removed only by the provision that God has made. The Israelites saved their lives by looking upon the uplifted ser- pent. That look implied faith. They lived because they believed God’s word, and trusted in the means provided for their recovery. So the sinner may look to Christ, and live. He receives pardon through faith in the atoning sacrifice. Unlike the inert and lifeless symbol, Christ has The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 23 12/20/11 10:19 AM 24 The Savior & the Serpent power and virtue in Himself to heal the repenting sinner (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 431). She also writes, “The people well knew that in itself the serpent had no power to help them. It was a symbol of Christ. As the image made in the likeness of the de- stroying serpents was lifted up for their healing, so One made ‘in the likeness of sinful flesh’ was to be their Redeemer” (The Desire of Ages, p. 174). Jesus said, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself ” (John 12:32). It is by looking to Jesus on the cross that we are drawn by His love for us. By gazing in faith at our Redeemer’s sacrifice, we are saved from the sting of the serpent. Again, God did not take away the serpents but instead provided a remedy. This world is something of a snake pit; as long as we are in this world, we will have to contend with the devil. However, The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 24 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 25 God has provided an abundance of anti- venom in the blood of Jesus to save us from the viper’s bite! When Jesus was on the cross, although His heel was pain- fully bruised, the serpent’s head was mortally crushed. Good Luck Charms God did not intend for the bronze ser- pent Moses forged and elevated on the stick to become an idol. Nevertheless, this bronze relic somehow managed to sur- vive all the wanderings and battles of the Israelites for more than 700 years. Most of the surrounding pagan Canaanite na- tions worshiped serpents as gods of fer- tility and mystical power. Over time, the Israelites began to imitate their neighbors and to treat this symbol of God’s forgive- ness as a deity in and of itself. [Hezekiah] removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 25 12/20/11 10:19 AM 26 The Savior & the Serpent cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan [something made of copper] (2 Kings 18:4). Like the ancient Israelites, millions around the world today are inadver- tently worshiping the serpent thinking they are worshiping the Lord. They have slowly and unwittingly been sucked into base idolatry. Indeed, many Christians have done the same thing with the symbol of the cross as the ancient Israelites did with the bronze serpent. But as the Israelites were not to worship the serpent on the pole, we are not to bow down to the cross. Neither are we commanded anywhere in Scripture to make the sign of the cross or to wear a cross on our persons. While the symbol of the cross has evolved into The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 26 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 27 a logo for Christianity, there is no mys- tical power or virtue in praying to this shape of the ancient Roman implement of torture. When Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me,” He was commanding His fol- lowers to bear the cross, not to wear the cross (Matthew 16:24). Revelation speaks of being saved not by the cross, but by the blood of Jesus. It was the cross as a demonstration of Jesus’ love and sacrifice that Paul and the dis- ciples exalted, not the revolting instru- ment itself. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” The redemption of the cross is what should be the focus of Christians. The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 27 12/20/11 10:19 AM 28 The Savior & the Serpent The Cup of Sin In the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, there rests a very precious goblet. In the center of the inside of that goblet is a gold serpent. It has ruby eyes and diamond fangs; its mouth is open, ap- pearing ready to strike. When the goblet is filled with wine, the red liquid covers the snake. As the wine is drunk, suddenly the serpent with its menacing appearance is revealed. Jesus, nearing the time of His cruci- fixion, shrank from the thought of sin and separation from the Father when He prayed, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me” (Matthew 26:39). Yet humbling Himself, He drank the cup of sin down to the dregs. “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” At Calvary, the serpent, which had been lingering through it all, struck with all of his dia- bolical vengeance. The intensity of evil … Jesus bore it all! The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 28 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 29 Defeated Foe Some have wondered, “If Satan was defeated by Jesus on the cross, then why do we still see and feel so much evidence of his evil works?” The devil knows he was defeated at the cross, but he is crazed with pride and anger. In order to inflict as much heartache on God as possible, he continues to fight tenaciously, wanting to take down with him as many human be- ings as possible. Revelation 12:12 declares, “Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.” Satan is now thrash- ing about wildly in his final death throes, striking any and all within his reach. However, the Bible promises that, ul- timately, Satan and his angels will be cast into the lake of fire. This also holds true for those people who follow the devil. “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 29 12/20/11 10:19 AM 30 The Savior & the Serpent you escape the condemnation of hell?” (Matthew 23:33). The good news is that in heaven, we will no longer need to walk through the woods in fear. Isaiah 11:8, 9 describes a paradise without harmful snakes: The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In the Father’s Hands A father and his eight-year-old daugh- ter were driving down a busy highway one balmy summer afternoon. Suddenly the little girl screamed and covered her head. A honeybee had flown in one of the open windows and was buzzing angrily around the cab looking for a way out. The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 30 12/20/11 10:19 AM The Savior & the Serpent 31 What so terrified the child was that, after having nearly died from them once before, she knew she was deathly allergic to bee stings. The father reached for the bee as it was buzzing, cornered between the windshield and the dashboard. The determined little creature escaped his grasp and now looked even more furious. The young girl pled, “Daddy! He’s going to sting me! I’ll die!” The father tried to calm her. “Don’t worry, sweetie. He can’t hurt you now.” “But, Daddy, he’s getting closer!” Then the father held out his right hand to his frightened daughter; there she saw a little stinger in his palm. “I took the stinger so he can’t hurt you now. All he can do is buzz around till he dies.” We can also rest assured Satan is doomed. Jesus has taken the venom of the enemy into His own body that we might be saved. Yes, the devil might still be rampaging through this world, but God’s children don’t need to be frightened. Jesus The Savior and the Serpent Text.indd 31 12/20/11 10:19 AM 32 The Savior & the Serpent promised, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

  • Hi.
    My name is Joshua McCormick.

I am half white/half Colombian. I speak Spanish.

I am a U.S. Air Force Veteran. I served four years in Security Forces. I was in Germany and Cyprus.

I have also traveled to Colombia and Ireland to visit family.

I am a High School History Teacher; certified in World History, U.S. History, Oklahoma History, Geography, Economics, and Government.
My final goal in education is to become an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) for my masters. I can be a councelor in school and outside of school.

I am also a missionary. I've been to Mexico twice and Vietnam twice on mission trips. My main missions goal is to get to Haiti. I am trying to raise support.

I am part of a team of missionaries called Hope Beyond Borders led by Pastor Winston Bui. Our sister organization is Impactful Missions led by Elisha Chan. We provide food, rice, beans, and oil to the hungry. We have a school in Haiti and sponsor children. We currently have K -2nd grades but are adding more buildings to support future grades. We also have a Women's clinic for pre and post natal health. Our Healthy Women's Instiative takes care of expecting mothers. We have a place for missionaries to stay, sleep, and eat at. We also do missions trainings there as well. It is called Theo's Place. It is named after the close friend of Luke of whom the Book of Acts is addressed to. Theophilus was a major supporter of missions in the early church.

If you would like to support me directly as a missionary, I have launched a GoFund Me campaign to go to my first trip to Haiti. There you will find a ton of information about what I do and what my team is doing in Haiti. There are links to all our websites and citations for information about Haiti.

Thank you and may the Lord Bless You!

Hi. Thank you and may the Lord Bless You! gofund.me/ad7c3ffc2 - GoFundMe Haiti https://www.hopebeyondborders.co/ - Hope Beyond Borders https://www.impactfulmissions.org/ - Impactful Missions #introduction #missionary #Haiti #support #hope #missions

  • BORN ABLAZE
I WAS ONLY TWELVE years old when I was converted. From that day, I wanted to be a soulwinner; I wanted to share with people what Jesus Christ meant to me. I was the seventh son of my parents. My father was the seventh son of his parents. I was raised on a farm where we all worked hard.
Lonnie, one of my older brothers, was converted at an old fashioned Oklahoma brush arbor meeting. There was such a change in him that I became very interested. He took me to a revival meeting in the little town of Mannford.
That night I received Jesus Christ as my savior. I started doing whatever I could to witness to unconverted people in my area.
With a toy press that I received as a Christmas present, I printed Bible verses on scraps of paper—my first tracts, and distributed them among the town's people, a population of not more than three hundred. I never dreamed that within a few years we would be publishing gospel literature in a hundred and thirty-two languages at a rate of more than a ton per working day.
I started preaching at the age of sixteen. Daisy and I were married when we were seventeen and eighteen years old and we became missionaries in India at the ages of twenty and twenty-one. I have preached face to face to millions of people in over eighty nations of the world. The more I study the Bible and the further I travel in evangelism, the more I am convinced that the greatest ministry possible for a Christian believer is to lead someone to faith in Christ.
The book of Acts begins with a reflection on all that Jesus began both to do and teach.
Ac.1:1 His life was the inspiration and model for First Century Christians. He had said to those who followed Him, Whoever believes on me, the works that I do shall he or she do also; and greater works than these shall they do; because I go to my Father.
Jn.14:12 They believed His words. Their focus was to continue doing and teaching what He had begun to do and teach. They understood that He was living and ministering through them. They were His voice, His feet, His body. He was now continuing what He had begun but now He was doing it through them.
Just before the Lord Jesus ascended back to the Father, He told His followers where to go and what to do:
You shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth.Ac.1:8
A First Century map indicates what this means: Jerusalem represents our hometown. All Judea suggests our state, province or nation.
No Discrimination But why did He make special mention of Samaria since He had already said in all Judea which included Samaria. He specified Samaria because it was a segregated area.
Remember how the woman of Samaria remarked to Jesus, The Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
And the Jews slandered Jesus saying: Say we not well that you are a Samaritan, and have a devil? Jesus told His followers to reach all Judea, then He specified and Samaria the forgotten, hurting, unloved people.
Samaria could be Indian or Aboriginal reservations, minority communities, migrant settlements, ghettos, rehabilitation centers, immigrant and refugee communities or any place that is considered inferior or is segregated from the mainstream of society.
Obviously God is interested in marginal people as much as He is in any other level of human
society. He wants no one excluded.

  • THERE IS NO REST IN MY SPIRIT UNTIL THE HEALING COMES!
People came to hear me preach as a young man in 1947 in a gospel tent on North Main in Tulsa, Oklahoma, not because I was preaching about a dead God or a dead Bible or a dead, dry religious experience. It was the power of God's Spirit that made them flock to hear me, as a struggling young preacher coming out of these hills of eastern Oklahoma.
And when the Holy Ghost's power comes upon this little hunk of clay, there's a compassion that races through my being like a wind across a prairie and a fire that whips through my soul like a roaring inferno. A tenderness touches my heart like a mother pulling her crying baby to her breast and I want to reach out to the sick, the afflicted, the hurting, the demon possessed. I want to get at the thing that's hurting them, that's tearing them up and destroying them. I want every man, woman, boy and girl to be healed, AND THERE'S NO REST IN MY SPIRIT UNTIL THE HEALING COMES!
And, my brother, my sister, God can put a brand-new fire in YOUR bones, a force in your inner man that will lift you up, that will thrust you into an even greater dimension of fulfilling His mighty calling on your life! Oh, don't be shy or hesitant! Just open yourself up to His Spirit!
WITH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FLOWING THROUGH TOUR LIFE, PEOPLE WILL WANT WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER—YOUR TALENTS, YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR EXPERTISE, YOUR WISDOM— MORE THAN EVER BEFORE!
