DAILY GOSPEL — DAY 13
PRAY WITHOUT CEASING
1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV
“Pray without ceasing.”
UNDERSTANDING THE WORD
Three simple words.
Yet they describe something incredibly important about our relationship with God.
“Pray without ceasing.”
Paul is not telling Christians that we must spend every moment of every day with our eyes closed and our heads bowed.
He is describing a life that remains continually turned toward God.
Prayer should not be something we only remember when life becomes difficult.
It should become part of the daily rhythm of walking with the Lord.
In the surrounding verses Paul writes:
“Rejoice evermore.
Pray without ceasing.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 KJV
Rejoicing.
Praying.
Giving thanks.
These are not meant only for easy days.
They are part of the Christian life in every season.
THE GOSPEL
Prayer is possible because through Jesus Christ we can approach God.
Sin separated humanity from God, but Christ came to reconcile sinners to Him.
Jesus gave Himself on the cross and rose again.
Those who belong to Christ are not approaching a distant God who does not care about them.
Scripture tells us:
“For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”
— Ephesians 2:18 KJV
Through Christ, we have access to the Father.
That means prayer is much more than simply asking God for things.
Prayer is part of our relationship with Him.
We worship Him.
We thank Him.
We confess our sins.
We bring Him our fears.
We ask for wisdom.
We pray for others.
And we bring our needs before Him.
A LIFE OF PRAYER
Yesterday we looked at God's command to Joshua:
“Be strong and of a good courage…”
But where do we turn when we don't feel strong?
We turn to God.
Prayer reminds us that we were never meant to carry life entirely in our own strength.
There may be moments when you pray for a long time.
But there can also be simple prayers throughout an ordinary day.
“Lord, give me wisdom.”
“Lord, help me.”
“Lord, forgive me.”
“Lord, guide me.”
“Lord, thank You.”
“Lord, help me honour You in this decision.”
Prayer can become the continual turning of our hearts toward God.
Before an important decision — pray.
When temptation comes — pray.
When someone needs help — pray.
When something good happens — give thanks.
When fear rises — pray.
When you sin — confess it to God.
When you don't know what to say — come before Him anyway.
You do not need perfect words.
Jesus taught:
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”
— Matthew 6:7 KJV
Prayer is not about impressing God with our words.
It is about sincerely seeking Him.
KEEP TURNING TO GOD
Sometimes we pray and receive an answer quickly.
Sometimes we pray and have to wait.
Sometimes God's answer is different from what we hoped for.
“Pray without ceasing” reminds us not to abandon prayer simply because the answer has not yet come.
Keep seeking God.
Keep bringing your concerns before Him.
Keep thanking Him.
Keep trusting Him.
And keep praying.
Not because prayer guarantees that every circumstance will unfold exactly as we want...
but because our confidence is in the God to whom we pray.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that through Jesus Christ I can come before You in prayer.
Teach me not to seek You only when life becomes difficult.
Help prayer become a natural part of my daily walk with You.
When I am worried, remind me to pray.
When I need wisdom, remind me to pray.
When I am blessed, remind me to give thanks.
When I sin, give me a heart that quickly turns back to You.
When answers seem delayed, help me continue trusting You.
Teach me to seek You throughout every part of my day and to depend upon You rather than myself.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
REFLECTION
What place does prayer currently have in your everyday life?
Do you mainly turn to God when something goes wrong, or are you learning to speak with Him throughout your day?
Choose one ordinary part of your daily routine today and use it as a reminder to pray.
