THE SABBATH THROUGH HISTORY Did the early church replace the Sabbath with Sunday? There is no explicit biblical record of the disciples transferring the sanctity of the seventh day to the first. Instead, Scripture repeatedly shows them continuing their Sabbath practice: “Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures.” (Acts 17:2) “And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath.” (Acts 18:4) Sabbath observance was not portrayed as obsolete — it was habitual. Centuries later, 5th-century historian Socrates Scholasticus observed: “Almost all churches throughout the world celebrate the sacred mysteries on the Sabbath of every week…” He was describing what he saw — not promoting a reform movement. If the apostles never record a Sabbath-to-Sunday transfer… And if early Christian worship still centered on Sabbath in many regions… Then Sunday observance is a historical development — not a biblical institution. Who has authority to change an express commandment of Almighty God? You are a Protestant, and you profess to go by the Bible and the Bible only; and yet in so important a matter as the observance of one day in seven as a holy day, you go against the plain letter of the Bible, and put another day in the place of that day which the Bible has commanded. The command to keep holy the seventh day is one of the ten commandments; you believe that the other nine are still binding; who gave you authority to tamper with the fourth?
