Guidelines for living. August 21st, 2026 Here’s The Only Way to Begin to Love This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:10-11 The greatest rivers in the world usually begin on the cold, frozen slopes of high mountains as the sun begins to melt snow and ice, and from the trickle of crystal-clear water a steam begins to flow and eventually a cascade of water plummets down the mountain. In the valley far below, the stream becomes a river, then a great river which we call the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges, the Rhine, or whatever. By the time these massive bodies of water reach the ocean, they may be kilometers wide, and they are muddy and polluted. Now, apply that same concept to the biblical truth that God is love. John tells us this in the New Testament, and the farther we are from Him, seemingly the more polluted love becomes. By the time it has been filtered through human lust, what we call love is a far cry from the compelling love which caused God to send His Son long ago. Love is not a platitude, it is an action, an unconditional commitment to care, a decision of your heart. True, love is what the world needs. The words of a song popular a generation ago said it all: “The world is dying, dying for a little bit of love,” says one verse. If you’ve been following this series based on Paul’s great chapter on love, found in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 13, you have focused on love’s characteristics, but any discussion of the subject would be incomplete without a few words of encouragement for you whose river of love has either evaporated in the desert of life, or else become so polluted you hardly know what the real thing is. When God touches your heart, your life will change. God takes up residence in your life, and the mud of sin is washed away. When pollution is eliminated, you start loving. This is the miracle of conversion. This is the answer to the lovelessness and the selfishness which destroys relationships. Joining a church, turning over a new leaf, going to confession, just “being religious,” is not the solution. A relationship with God through His son is the only way you will really begin to love. I will give you three simple guidelines that will help. Guideline #1: Acknowledge you need a relationship with God and confess that sin has stopped the flow of love in your life. It’s easy to point a finger and say, “Well, it was his fault; her fault.” The solution is saying, “God, I need you. Forgive me. Touch my life.” Guideline #2: Ask God’s forgiveness for your failure—not the other person’s—and ask Him to be Lord and Savior. Jesus gave us a promise. He said, “I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and have fellowship with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). That promise has your name on it, friend. Guideline #3: Begin loving in simple steps, one day at a time. When you fail and fall back into those old habits and a loveless way, quickly admit your wrong; ask God’s help to overcome it. Friend, you can talk about love until you have calluses on your vocal cords, but until you get back to the fountain and the source of love, who is God Himself, you’ll never lay hold of the real thing: the God kind of love that changes the world. So, go back to the source. It’s the only way to fill your cup and have enough left over for someone else in your life. Love is not a pious platitude. It’s the answer. Resource Reading: 1 John 4:1-21

The Story Behind the Hymns THE STORY BEHIND " WHO IS ON THE LORD'S SIDE? " “Who Is on the Lord’s Side?” is a stirring Christian hymn written by Frances Ridley Havergal, the English poet, hymn writer and devotional author whose words often called believers to deeper commitment and wholehearted service to Christ. The hymn was written in 1877, during a period when Havergal was deeply involved in Christian ministry and devotional writing. Its central question is direct and searching: “Who is on the Lord’s side?” Rather than simply asking believers to identify themselves as Christians, the hymn challenges them to consider whether they are truly willing to stand with Christ and serve Him. The hymn’s inspiration is closely connected with the biblical language of choosing whom one will serve. Its message echoes Joshua’s declaration in Joshua 24:15: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve,” while also drawing on the New Testament call to follow Christ faithfully. Each verse develops the theme of surrender and allegiance. Havergal speaks of giving oneself fully to the Lord, following His leadership, enduring hardship and remaining faithful to His cause. The hymn therefore moves beyond a declaration of faith to a call for action, courage and consecration. The familiar opening asks: “Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King?” The “King” is Christ, and the question is presented as an invitation to make a deliberate choice. The hymn reminds worshippers that Christian discipleship involves more than words; it calls for a life placed at the service of God. Havergal became known for hymns that expressed personal devotion, consecration and commitment to Christ. Among her other well-known hymns are “Take My Life, and Let It Be” and “Like a River Glorious.” Her writings continue to be sung and read by Christians around the world. “Who Is on the Lord’s Side?” has endured because of its timeless challenge. Generations of Christians have sung it as a hymn of dedication, especially in worship services where believers are encouraged to renew their commitment to Christ and His work. More than a century after it was written, its question remains just as powerful: when the call to serve the King comes, where do we stand?

WHEN GOD WRITES ON THE WALL A Call to Examine Your Heart Before God KEY SCRIPTURE “TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” — Daniel 5:27 (KJV) Thought Of The Day... There are times when God whispers to our hearts. There are times when He sends warnings through His Word, through circumstances, and through people. And then there are moments when God makes His message so unmistakably clear that it can no longer be ignored. Daniel 5 gives us one of the most powerful and sobering examples in all of Scripture. King Belshazzar was surrounded by celebration. The palace was filled with people, food, wine, wealth, music, power, and prestige. To everyone looking from the outside, it appeared that the king had everything under control. But while Belshazzar was celebrating on earth, Heaven was examining his heart. While people were honoring the king, God was weighing the king. While Belshazzar was looking at what he possessed, God was looking at what he had become. Suddenly everything changed. “In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.” — Daniel 5:5 (KJV) The celebration stopped. The king's confidence disappeared. The man who commanded others suddenly had no control over himself. Scripture says: “Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him... and his knees smote one against another.” — Daniel 5:6 (KJV) Belshazzar discovered something that we must never forget: when God speaks, earthly power cannot silence Him. When God exposes something, money cannot cover it. When God pronounces judgment, human influence cannot reverse it. Belshazzar called for the astrologers, Chaldeans, soothsayers, and wise men of Babylon, but none of them could interpret the writing. All the intelligence of Babylon was powerless before a message that came from God. Eventually Daniel was summoned. Daniel had lived faithfully before God for years. Kings had changed. Governments had changed. Circumstances had changed. Daniel had grown older, but his commitment to God had remained. What a testimony! The queen said concerning Daniel: “...there is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods... light and understanding and wisdom... was found in him.” — Daniel 5:11 (KJV) Daniel had developed a reputation that when everybody else was confused, Daniel knew how to seek God. May that become our testimony. When people around us are confused, may they know that we know God. When families experience trouble, may they know there is somebody who knows how to pray. When darkness enters a situation, may our lives carry the light of Christ. Jesus declared: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” — Matthew 5:14 (KJV) Belshazzar offered Daniel wealth, clothing, jewelry, and political promotion if he could interpret the message. But Daniel answered: “Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another...” — Daniel 5:17 (KJV) Daniel's integrity was not for sale. He didn't need the king's money to tell the king God's truth. He wasn't seeking popularity. He wasn't chasing another title. Daniel understood that pleasing God was greater than pleasing people. That same conviction must live within us. There will be times when standing upon God's Word will not make us popular. There will be times when truth will challenge people. There will be times when obedience may cost us opportunities, relationships, applause, or acceptance. But we must be able to say: “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men?...” — Galatians 1:10 (KJV) Daniel reminded Belshazzar about Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar had once become lifted up in pride, and God humbled him until he understood: “...that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.” — Daniel 5:21 (KJV) Then Daniel spoke words that should cause every believer to examine his or her heart: “And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this.” — Daniel 5:22 (KJV) Though thou knewest all this. Belshazzar had been given an example. He knew what pride had done before him, but he refused to learn from it. There is a dangerous difference between not knowing God's will and knowing God's will but refusing to obey it. The Bible says: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” — James 4:17 (KJV) God's patience should never be mistaken for God's approval. Just because judgment has not come does not mean God approves of what we are doing. Sometimes God's delay is actually God's mercy giving us time to repent. “The Lord is... longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV) Belshazzar had also taken the sacred vessels from God's temple and used them during his celebration. He treated what belonged to God as though it were common. Daniel told him: “...thou hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven...” — Daniel 5:23 (KJV) This should cause us to ask ourselves: Have we become too casual with the things of God? Have we become casual about prayer? Casual about worship? Casual about God's Word? Casual about holiness? Casual about our calling? Casual about the gifts God placed inside us? Casual about gathering with other believers? God is loving, gracious, merciful, and compassionate, but He is still holy. “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.” — 1 Peter 1:15 (KJV) Belshazzar praised gods made from silver, gold, brass, iron, wood, and stone. Yet when trouble entered the palace, none of those gods could answer him. How often do people still place their confidence in things that cannot save them? Money cannot save the soul. A career cannot save the soul. A title cannot save the soul. Popularity cannot save the soul. Possessions cannot save the soul. Human relationships cannot take God's place. Jesus asked: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36 (KJV) Then Daniel revealed the handwriting: “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.” — Daniel 5:25 (KJV) MENE meant: “God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.” — Daniel 5:26 (KJV) Belshazzar thought he had more time. God said his time had been numbered. That should remind us that every day is a gift from God. Every morning is mercy. Every breath is grace. Every opportunity to pray is precious. Every opportunity to forgive matters. Every opportunity to tell someone about Jesus matters. Every opportunity to obey God matters. David prayed: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 (KJV) Then came TEKEL: “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” — Daniel 5:27 (KJV) What a frightening statement. Belshazzar had been weighed—not by public opinion, not by his friends, not by his servants, and not by the standards of Babylon. He had been weighed by God. People may celebrate what God is correcting. People may applaud what God is examining. People may be impressed by our gifts while God is concerned about our character. People may see our appearance while God sees our hearts. Scripture declares: “...for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV) That brings us to a serious question: If God examined my heart today, what would He find? Would He find humility or pride? Would He find obedience or rebellion? Would He find forgiveness or bitterness? Would He find love or hatred? Would He find integrity when nobody is watching? Would He find genuine faith? Would He find someone seeking His glory—or someone seeking his or her own? This is not about earning salvation. We cannot save ourselves through our works. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works...” — Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV) Our hope is Jesus Christ. But when Christ truly transforms our hearts, our lives should produce evidence of that transformation. Finally came PERES: “Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” — Daniel 5:28 (KJV) Then Scripture delivers the sobering conclusion: “In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.” — Daniel 5:30 (KJV) That night. Belshazzar started the evening sitting on a throne and ended it having lost everything. He thought he had tomorrow. He didn't. This is why Scripture says: “...behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” — 2 Corinthians 6:2 (KJV) Don't wait for tomorrow to surrender what God is asking for today. Don't wait until tomorrow to forgive. Don't wait until tomorrow to repent. Don't wait until tomorrow to pray. Don't wait until tomorrow to make things right. Don't wait until tomorrow to answer God's call. And above all, don't wait until tomorrow to come to Jesus. Daniel 5 is not merely about handwriting appearing on a wall. It is about a God who sees beyond appearances and examines the heart. Belshazzar's kingdom is gone. Babylon's glory faded. Its wealth could not last. Its power could not last. Its king could not last. But our God remains. “For I am the LORD, I change not...” — Malachi 3:6 (KJV) Before God ever has to write something on the wall, allow Him to write His Word upon your heart. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” — Psalm 119:11 (KJV) Let His Word correct you. Let His Word convict you. Let His Word humble you. Let His Word guide you. Let His Word transform you. And when God reveals something in your heart that needs to change, don't run from Him. Run to Him. Because through Jesus Christ there is forgiveness, mercy, restoration, and new life. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (KJV) PRAYER... Most Holy and Eternal God, our Father, We come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, humbled by Your Word and grateful for Your mercy. Father, search us today. Your Word declares: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23 (KJV) Lord, shine Your light into every area of our lives. Reveal anything within us that does not please You. If pride has entered our hearts, humble us. If bitterness has entered our hearts, cleanse us. If unforgiveness has taken root, help us forgive. If compromise has entered our lives, give us courage to turn away from it. If we have become casual concerning holy things, restore our reverence for You. If anything has taken Your rightful place in our hearts, tear down every idol and draw us back to You. Father, never allow us to become so comfortable with Your blessings that we forget the One who blessed us. Help us remember that every breath comes from You, every opportunity comes from You, every gift comes from You, and every good thing comes from You. Your Word says: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above...” — James 1:17 (KJV) Give us the spirit of Daniel. Give us wisdom when others are confused. Give us courage when others compromise. Give us integrity when temptation comes. Give us faith when circumstances become difficult. Give us boldness to speak Your truth with love. May we never sell our convictions for acceptance, promotion, popularity, money, or position. Father, teach us to number our days. Help us understand that tomorrow is not promised and today is an opportunity to glorify You. May our lives bring honor to Jesus Christ. May our homes glorify You. May our marriages and families glorify You. May our ministries glorify You. May our workplaces glorify You. May our words glorify You. May our decisions glorify You. And when You examine our hearts, may You find people who sincerely love You, trust You, obey You, and desire to walk according to Your Word. Thank You for Jesus. Thank You that where we have fallen short, the blood of Jesus still cleanses. Thank You that repentance is still available. Thank You that grace is still available. Thank You that mercy is still available. Thank You that restoration is still available. Create within us clean hearts and renew right spirits within us. “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10 (KJV) We surrender ourselves completely to You. In the mighty, matchless, wonderful name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen and Amen! DECLARATION... I DECLARE IN THE NAME OF JESUS: My heart belongs to God! My life belongs to God! My family belongs to God! My gifts belong to God! My future belongs to God! My worship belongs to God! I will not allow pride to rule my heart. I will not allow the things of this world to become idols in my life. I will not compromise God's Word for popularity, acceptance, position, possessions, or applause. Like Daniel, I will walk with an excellent spirit. I will stand when others compromise. I will pray when others panic. I will trust God when others doubt. I will speak truth with love. I will honor God publicly and privately. MENE! I understand that my days are numbered, therefore I will make my days count for the glory of God. TEKEL! I understand that God examines the heart, therefore I will walk humbly and sincerely before Him. PERES! I understand that earthly kingdoms, possessions, titles, and accomplishments will pass away, but the Kingdom of God will stand forever. I declare that God's Word will be written upon my heart. I will not wait for the handwriting on the wall before I obey God. TODAY I CHOOSE JESUS! TODAY I CHOOSE HUMILITY! TODAY I CHOOSE OBEDIENCE! TODAY I CHOOSE HOLINESS! TODAY I CHOOSE FAITH! TODAY I CHOOSE TO LIVE FOR THE GLORY OF GOD! “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15 (KJV) This is my declaration, this is my commitment, and this is my prayer—in Jesus' mighty name. Guidelines for living. August 20th, 2026 What Does Agape Love Look Like? Love … doesn’t force itself on others, isn’t always “me first,” doesn’t fly off the handle, doesn’t keep score of the sins of others. 1 Corinthians 13:5 The Message When Sir Ernest Shackleton was exploring in the arctic, he faced a very difficult hour as their rations became depleted. Finally, the last biscuit had been given out to each of the men. There was not a crumb of anything left. That night Shackleton lay awake in his sleeping bag with their peril heavily on his mind. He knew that death by starvation was approaching unless something happened. As he lay there with thoughts he dared not express keeping him from sleep, out of the corner of his eye he noticed movement by one of his men. A cold chill came over him as he realized this man was stealthily reaching for the food bag of the man next to him. Shackleton still pretended to be asleep. His mind reeled; he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. This was one of his most trusted men. Still, he knew that starving men sometimes act like predators. He was not disturbed for long, however. The man did reach for the food container of his companion … and then quietly took his own biscuit, his last one, and placed it in the other man’s parcel before lying down to sleep. That is the companionship and the cost of real love. To this Paul adds the words, “Love does not seek its own.” Another version puts it: “Love does not act in its own interest.” Love acting in its own interest is not the agape love that is described by Paul. When the expression of love does not embrace the total needs of the other person, it falls short of this test which Paul articulated. Agape love produces an unspoken commitment—without conditions or strings attached—to meet the needs of the person who is the object of affection, and along with that commitment comes personal sacrifice which is not difficult to make. “Love,” writes Paul, “is not easily provoked.” George Bernard Shaw once said, “I was taught when I was young that if people would only love one another, all would be well with the world. This seemed simple and very nice, but I found when I tried to put it into practice not only that other people were seldom lovable, but that I was not very lovable myself.” That’s the predicament we often find ourselves in—not only are others unlovable but when we are honest with ourselves we must admit we are not very lovable either. A gardener once wrote to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and said, “I’ve tried everything I’ve ever heard or read, including all of your bulletins, on how to get rid of dandelions—and I’ve still got them.” By return mail he received the last word on the subject. “Dear Sir,” read the letter, “if you have tried everything and you still have dandelions, then there is only one thing left for you to do: learn to love them.” You know, we smile at that candid bit of advice, but life is much like a lawn full of dandelions. We want to be rid of them any way we can—kill them by spraying (that is, the dandelions), dig them, bomb them, pull them out—destroy them no matter what, just get rid of them! Nevertheless, at times, the dandelions of life hang in there, and God expects us to love them by the alchemy of faith and grace. When Paul wrote to the Romans, he told them God’s love comes through His Spirit who is given to us. That’s the only way to learn to really love. Resource Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Devotion: Luke 10:19 Luke 10:19: “Listen! I have given you authority, so that you can walk on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the power of the Enemy, and nothing will hurt you.” Thoughts: Accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour and thus inviting the Holy Spirit into your life, you also gain power through God; power to face even the most daunting enemies and challenges. If you live your life in honor of God, if you understand that His presence in your life is a constant, you never need to be afraid again. Fear makes us weak, it makes us doubt that God can intervene in time to save us. If we stand firm in the knowledge that we have power through our belief in the Lord, if we face the future with courageous hearts, we can (and will) overcome any obstacle in our way. Fear gives the devil a foothold, he thrives on us being afraid and uses it against us. When we take our stand against evil, against the world, knowing that we are children of the Almighty; children with God-given power, even the devil and his minions will fall. Luke 10:17: “....Even the demons obeyed us when we gave them a command in your name." A word of warning, though, remember that with this power comes a warning: Luke 10:17: “But don’t be glad because the evil spirits obey you; rather be glad because your names are written in heaven.” Therefore you should accept our God-given power and use it to quench the human fear still lurking in our lives. In our commitment to God we can use this power to overcome even the darkest of enemies and do so to glorify His name. For it is only through Him that we can claim this power and only with His blessing that we can use it in our daily battle. Ask yourself: Are you ready to accept God's challenge and take up the powerful sword God gave you? Are you ready to trust in Him so that you can live a life to His glory, victorious agaist the treachery of the world? #Luke10 #Devotion #PowerofGod

Daily devotion for August 20th The Oath In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it. Nehemiah 9:38 This verse includes a list of what might be termed the company of the committed. These people see a need for preserving and perpetuating the changes in their lifestyles so as to keep in step with God; thus, they sign this agreement to bind themselves to that end. This agreement represents a kind of universal urge found among humans to publicly pledge themselves to be loyal to a cause they feel is right. When the Pilgrims were about to land at Plymouth, they formed what they called the Mayflower Compact. They drew up rules for living in the new land, and they all signed it as an agreement to live by these principles and laws. But there is one other very important point here. Ultimately these people failed to follow through with their commitment. Subsequent history reveals that all the old habits returned. The nation once again lost the blessing of God upon it. Why? We discover the key in Nehemiah 10:29. They said, All these now join their brothers the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses. They were depending on their own efforts to obey. They bound themselves with a curse and an oath. They were saying, We will do this or else. They were relying upon their own will power. They were gritting their teeth and swearing to perform. There is no expression of any need of help from God or of any provision for failure and return. That is what the New Testament adds. It is right to vow. It is right to write it down for your own benefit and remind yourself frequently of your goal. But we must always add the words that Paul uses of himself, I can do everything through him who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13). That is what makes the difference. Lord, I can do nothing apart from You. I commit myself to You and what You desire for me, but I realize that even the desire to do that comes from You.

The spiral of lust enslaved him ‘until there wasn’t a moment of his days free from its tortured domination.’ The cycle of prayers for deliverance, followed by repeated indulgence in porn, XXX DVDs, and sex chat-rooms, plunged him deeper into the darkness of despair and He longed to escape the slimy, secluded underworld of secret soul-destroying sin, but every pathetic attempt left him unchanged, unhinged, and uncertain that freedom was possible for him. Mike turned to self-help books, counsellors and friends without success. His repeated disappointment, when every effort failed, led to increasing guilt and self-incrimination. When his wife insisted on a last-ditch visit to see her pastor (all other remedies had been exhausted), the lights in their bleak prison cell suddenly came on. Mike learned that ‘…deliverance belong(s) to the Lord’ (Jonah 2:9 AMP), and its rules are all dictated by Him. Mike’s old motivations for getting clean—‘saving my marriage for my kids’ sake; I’m a Christian, a seminary graduate and preacher’—were full of ‘loopholes and escape clauses’ and produced one botched disaster after another. His pastor taught him that the only viable motivation for getting clean and staying clean was a commitment to glorifying God in all of his decisions, because God delivers the powerless, ‘For the glory of [His] name.’ When Mike learned, ‘…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God’ (1Corinthians 10:31 NIV), the doors to freedom from years of sexual addiction began to open. And the men went up and viewed Ai. 3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few. 4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. 6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. *Timeless Truth:*_"A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump"_ (1 Corinthians 5:9). *INTRODUCTION* Israel had just experienced a remarkable victory at Jericho. The intimidating walls had fallen, the people had rejoiced, and Joshua’s leadership had received great honour. *"So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noise throughout all the country"* (Joshua 6:27). Yet, within a short time, that fame turned into shame. It is noteworthy that Israel never lost any battle either under Moses or under Joshua. It was natural for them to think that experience is the best teacher. The text shows clearly the danger of leaning only on experience when it comes to spiritual battles. God must continue to lead and the Word of God must remain final. The text teaches us that yesterday’s victory does not guarantee today’s success when there is hidden disobedience. Sin in the camp can turn triumph into tragedy. God desires not only victorious people, but also holy people. *1. Stealing Cursed Properties* a. *"For the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing"*. A glorious and happy journey suddenly turned sour and sorrowful because of sin. Many great men have also fallen from glory to grass just because of a single sin that became public.One man sinned and the whole nation suffered for it. The army that the whole Canaanites dreaded and could not conquer was conquered by the sin of a single rebel. Obviously, the tempter and demons had a field day. Achan was guilty of stealing what did not belong to him. That was disobedience to one of the ten commandments, *"thou shalt not steal"*. He did not just steal what belonged to his neighbours, which was equally sin, he stole classified materials that God called accursed and those that were to be reserved for God in His sanctuary. He did not feign ignorance when caught, he knew it was forbidden. He went deeper in his sin by hiding it from people until the knock of death became real. God had expressly commanded Israel concerning the devoted things of Jericho. *"And ye shall in any wise keep yourself from accursed thing, lest ye make yourself accursed..."* (Joshua 6:1). Achan secretly took what God had forbidden. He thought since nobody saw it, God could not have seen it either. His private sin produced public consequences: *“the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.”* b. Achan’s action reminds us that what is obtained through disobedience cannot produce lasting blessings. Hidden sin may remain concealed from people, but nothing is hidden from God. The desire for material gain can lead a person from honour to disgrace, from victory to defeat and from fame to shame. Sin will turn fame to shame overnight no matter how long it can be hidden. There are some shame that can never be taken away. Some people's sins are revealed after death and they bring a lot of shame on themselves and their families. The sin of a single person can bring a whole family, church and nation into unlimited ridicule and defeat. *"A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump"*. There must be care and watchfulness against all forms of sins so as to avoid community, church or societal judgment. Partnership and marriage with accursed and demonized people have deadly consequences and should be avoided. *Question* Is there anything in my life that I have acquired or retained contrary to God’s command? *2. Self-Confidence and Pride* a. Israel had so far won all their battles. Jericho had a population of between 1,200 and 3,000 and yet they had to allow God to guide and lead them. As few as they were, the whole army of Israel was involved. The population of Ai was about 12,000. Shouldn't they ask for guidance as usual? They resorted to recommendations of experience without checking up from God. Unconsciously, pride of past successes results in self confidence. The spies returned with confidence, suggesting that only a small force was needed for such a large city. They thought it was their wisdom and might that had earned them a former victory. Their assessment overlooked the most important factor—the presence and favour of God. They trusted their own strength rather than seeking God's direction. Consequently, about three thousand men went to battle and were defeated. b. Success can sometimes produce overconfidence, making us forget that every victory comes from God. *"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will trust the name of the LORD"*. Pride as a result of past victory or success are natural reactions that must be deliberately avoided. Human strength, experience, position, wealth and reputation cannot substitute for dependence upon the Lord. *Question* Am I depending more on my past achievements and personal ability than on God? *3. Supplication with Crying after Defeat* a. The shame and defeat brought Joshua to his knees to do what he should have done before sending 3000 for the battle. If he had prayed, remained spiritually sensitive and heard from God, God would have told him not to proceed on the battle, but to settle the issue on ground first. On the other hand, we must commend Joshua for not being touchy. He could have blamed the spies for underestimating the population of Ai. He could have blamed the defeated soldiers for being careless and not smart enough. Joshua did not do that. He could see abnormality and spiritual implications in the unusual and unexpected defeat. When strange things happen to us contrary to the Word and promise of God, we should learn to see the face of God and hear His Word on the matter. b. Israel’s defeat brought fear, discouragement and deep sorrow. Joshua tore his clothes and fell before the Ark of the LORD with the elders, putting dust upon their heads. His response shows that when God's people experience defeat, they must turn to God in humility and supplication. Prayer should not merely be our response after failure; it should be our posture before every major undertaking. Nevertheless, even in defeat, God can reveal the cause of the problem and lead His people back to restoration. The place of brokenness can become the beginning of renewed obedience. *Question* When I experience failure or defeat, do I genuinely seek God for correction and restoration? *Prayer Points* 1.Lord, give me grace to reject every form of disobedience and to flee from every forbidden thing. This is the gist of our text. The magnified leader is now mortified, but he refrained from maligning God. Self-emptied, self-humiliated and broken, Joshua's primary concerns were twofold: loss of innocent Israelites and the tender regard for the honour of God's name. He wailed: "O Lord, what will thou do unto thy great name?" He conceded both justice and wisdom to God. Neither did he blame the spies he sent out for furnishing the nation with supposedly inaccurate security reports. Nor did he castigate the soldiers who were defeated in battle for cowardice. Joshua did not underestimate the deadliness of sin. He wisely resorted to the only window left, namely, mercy, as a solution to the present crisis.* *The only option you have when ensnared in sin is a broken and contrite heart. "TRUST YOUR BIBLE, IT'S TRUE!" ‘…that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled...’ Matthew 26:56 NIV THE DEATH, burial and resurrection of Jesus fulfilled no less than twenty-nine different Old Testament prophecies. The odds of that happening are virtually impossible! Mathematician Peter Stoner explains it this way: ‘If you were to cover the state of Texas two feet deep in pound coins, then on one, place a mark. What is the probability that a blindfolded person could, on their first attempt, select that coin? That’s the likelihood of just eight prophecies being fulfilled in one lifetime. And Jesus fulfilled twenty-nine of them in one day!’ Let’s look at some of the prophecies He fulfilled: 1) ‘…They pierced My hands and… feet’ (Psalms 22:16 NKJV). 2) ‘They divide my garments…and…cast lots’ (Psalms 22:18 NKJV). 3) ‘…in that day…I will make the sun go down at noon, and…darken the earth in…daylight’ (Amos 8:9 NKJV). Jesus predicted both His death and His resurrection. He told His critics, ‘…“Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”…the temple he had spoken of was his body’ (John 2:19-21 NIV). Jesus orchestrated every event, including Judas’ betrayal, the high priest’s hypocrisy, and Peter’s denial. Why? ‘That the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.’ So you can trust your Bible because it’s true. And something else is true too. God is ‘…able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…’ (Ephesians 3:20 NIV). Note the words ‘immeasurably more.’ What seems impossible to you at the moment, is all in a day’s work for Him. So start trusting Him to work on your behalf. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord. *Timeless Truth:* _"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"_ (Psalm 133:1). *INTRODUCTION* Love and unity are the indispensable catalysts of human relationships that make life worthwhile. Without these two graces, life ceases to have meaning and will breed heartaches, emotional troubles, bitter enmity and rivalries, anguish of the soul and all sorts of relational problems. The fulfilment and joy of natural and spiritual families, communities, nations etc rest on love and unity. *"Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity"*. Satan's delight is to fuel relational problems and thereby make the earth another hell for relations. When the foundation of happy relationship and co-existence is destroyed, what shall the righteous do? The foundation of a happy and united family life of Isaac was broken and it had its toll on the children. Parental disunity and favoritism led to bitter rivalry between Esau and Jacob. The result was not a sweet experience for each member of the family. After 20 years of separation between the children, the need for peace and unity, so as to end the ugly experience became imperative. They must be commended that they did not die in that situation. They allowed God and let go of their differences. What can we learn from them about how to build the broken walls and foundation of life and unity among brethren? Read on. *1. Bridge the Communication Gap* a. The main reason Jesus came to pay the ultimate price of redemption is to break the communication barrier between man and God due to sin. Once that barrier is broken, it will be possible to break the communication barrier among fellow brethren. The fact that Jesus paid this price underscores the importance of love and unity among brethren. No man can claim to be godly without conscious and deliberate commitment to living in peace and love with fellow brethren and neighbours. A graceless person will be content with disunity and loveless relationships while true grace makes true reconciliation possible. Jacob initiated it and this shows he had grace. He first settled the problem in the spiritual realm by wrestling with God on a lonely night at Jabbok. His personal encounter with God first changed his life, blew his ego to the wind of heaven, brought a deep transformation into his life and melted his hardened heart of deception. The change must start with you. The godly who desires to live at peace and pleases God must be ready to pray through until his heart is melted with the grace to forgive, forget and fall into the love of God. Ego or self is often the main problem that must bow in order to live at peace and unity. b. For the first time after 20 years, Jacob opted to take the lead by asking for a face to face meeting with his estranged brother and bridge the communication gap. *"And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee?"*. Take the godly initiative and step: bridge the Communication Gap. Sink all your pride, anger, hatred, bitterness and desire for revenge at the cross and take the initiative. Unknown to him, Esau, though a violent man, secretly desired peace too. It only takes one to bell the cat. Surprisingly, the God of peace that had broken Jacob at the altar of prayer and grace had also dealt with Esau too. Broken communication became mended. *"And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant"*. In bringing peace to a troubled or broken relationship, there may be the need to bring a third party that is respected by both sides and has the wisdom and grace to mend relationships. *Question* Are you willing to please and bridge the communication gap with someone? How do you want to demonstrate your willingness? *2. Bind Your Character with Grace* a. Jacob had trained all his wives and children on how to show respect and give honour to the one who had been hurt and might be breathing out revenge and anger. It was not the time prove who was wrong or right. In reconciliation, self defence is minimized. *"Why do ye not rather accept wrong? Why not rather let yourselves suffer wrong and be deprived of what is your due? Why do you not rather take wrong?"* (1Corinthians 6:7). The crucified saint will be willing to accept blame even when he is not convinced that he is wrong for the sake of peace. This is where grace is also needed. *"Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves"*. All the people with Jacob went humbly and bowed to their Daddy's brother. Jacob had depoisoned the hearts of his people so that they could sincerely give the needed and expected honour to Esau. The peaceful person will not be a hypocritical person who will pretend to seek for peace and unity and privately he will be poisoning the hearts of others. b. Humility is an essential part of living in love and unity and building again love and unity in a broken relationship. Many apologies, though may be simple, have a way of healing hurt hearts and broken bones and barriers in relationships. It takes humility to bend when the other person is standing on his points which may even be wrong and unacceptable altogether. *"The fruit of peace is shown by them which make peace"*. *"Blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called the children of GOD"*. *Question* Are you willing to pay the price of love and unity so that your life receives the immeasurable blessings of obedience to God or you still want to stick to your gun and end up in perdition? *3. Bless Your Companion With Gifts* God paid the price of reconciliation with man by giving us the gift of Jesus Christ and all other spiritual and earthly gifts and blessings. True reconciliation must also be sealed up with exchange and acceptance of godly and helpful gifts. Jacob was smart to have prepared gifts for Esau ahead of their encounter. In fact, at first, Esau wanted to wisely reject the gifts. If he had refused, then know that the problem was only solved superficially. *"And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord"*. The Scripture says, *"A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men"* (Proverbs 18:16). It is not how much that is affordable, but the heart of love and reconciliation that is behind it. Jacob insisted that the gift should be taken though Esau himself was well to do. *"Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it"*. Look at the choice of words of wisdom and humility of Jacob. He was not using words that will fuel the ember of hatred, but words that will calm down nerves. *"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger"* (Proverbs 15:1). THE STORY BEHIND "I'II PRAISE MY MAKER WHILE I'VE BREATH “I’ll Praise My Maker While I’ve Breath” is a beloved hymn by the English hymn writer and theologian Isaac Watts (1674–1748). The hymn is based on Psalm 146, transforming the biblical psalm into a personal declaration of lifelong trust, praise and devotion to God.
