Daily devotion: Habakkuk 3:17-18 “Even though the fig trees have no fruit and no grapes grow on the vines, even though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no corn, even though the sheep all die and the cattle stalls are empty, I will still be joyful and glad, because the LORD God is my saviour.” The one thing that no one can deny is that the human race is flailing under the oppression of pure evil. Never, in my lifetime, has the world been filled with so much anger, hatred and death. People are out of control. This current generation continues to mock God and the faithful. It also seems that nature itself turned its back on people. Fire and earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, drought and famine, pestilence. And I’m not even mentioning the events happening in space. The world is filled with godless people. You look at the news and see the devil in their eyes. They are not hiding anymore. These are similar to the days of Noah and it has been prophesied that, in endtimes, people will be selfish and arrogant, lovers of money and superficial appearances. They will mock our God and refuse to repent. They ask: “Where is this God of yours. Show me the scientific evidence of His existence.” Do they not understand that even THEY were CREATED by God. THEY are the evidence. Every single cell of all that lives on this planet, humans, animals, plants, has been made by God Himself. Our purpose on earth is to worship our Lord and to spread the gospel. As Christians we should not fear the things that are happening and the things that are still coming. We may live difficult lives, but still we need to rejoice in the Lord. It may seem impossible to praise God in times of anguish, but just look at what Habakkuk 3:19 says: “The Sovereign LORD gives me strength. He makes me sure-footed as a deer, and keeps me safe on the mountains.” God is within each one of us and we should look towards the future with joy and exaltation, for He is steadfast, He is almighty, He is the ONE God. Everybody gets knocked down, but how fast you get up again is what counts. Verla Gillmor says: ‘Failure teaches us things we can’t learn any other way…Treat it as a visitor allowed to deliver unpleasant news, but don’t let it take up residence. Remember, all failures aren’t equal. For example, when a beautiful, talented young woman is the first-runner-up in a beauty contest, some say she failed. Yet some people would give their right arm to be named the second most attractive female in a competition. It’s a matter of perspective… [examine] your failures and weigh them according to their importance in the overall scheme of things…I once received a ‘D’ at college…it’s ridiculous, but that sticks in my mind like a pebble in my shoe. Why do I fixate on that and not the fact that it happened during the term I carried nineteen credit hours, worked part-time, got engaged, and spent six weeks in the college health centre with mononucleosis? When I put the experience in context, it loses its power to undermine my confidence. Failure teaches us what’s important. I have a friend who was made redundant…It caught her by surprise because she was good at her work. “I tended to be full of pride,” she says. “I got away with it because I was so successful. Losing my job…humbled me. With pride you have no permission to fail. It’s a heavy yoke…and I don’t wear it any more. [12/08, 8:10 pm] Pastor Attah: *MEDITATIONS ON DAILY ⓂANNA* THURSDAY, 13TH AUGUST, 2026. *A MORE DESCRIPTION OF HEAVEN* *TEXT:* REVELATION 21:1-8. 1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. *Timeless Truth:*_"For he (Abraham) looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God"_ (Hebrews 11:10). *INTRODUCTION* When Garden Eden was created, it was the most beautiful place Adam could ever conceive of, with all the beautiful birds, animals, plants and cool weather. However, nobody needed to tell Adam that there must be a better place because the God that used to commune with him in *"the cool of the day"* was not living in Eden. He must be dwelling in a better place. This faith was carried on from generations to generations until the time of Abraham, who in spite of all the wealth promised him, his affection was focused on the better city. *"For he (Abraham) looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God"*. Nobody was given a better revelation of heaven than Apostle John. Enoch and Elijah were said to be translated to heaven. How heaven looked like was left to human imaginations. Jesus Christ also mentioned heaven as the abode of the Triune God. He only told us it has many mansions. At the mount of transfiguration was revealed the glory of heaven and how the inhabitants will look like. Nothing more was revealed. Stephen saw heaven at the point of death but just faintly (Acts 7:55-56). Paul the apostle was taken to heaven which he called the third heaven, but he said he was not permitted to reveal what he saw to any except that he exposed that it has many foundations (Acts 11:10, 2 Corinthians 12:2-4). The text shows us the climax of God's revelation about heaven. Yet the Bible writers were short of words to describe heaven except that it is the place where God dwells from eternity, with all His created angels and saints. *"How beautiful heaven must be"*. *1. Prepared Heaven* a. Those who doubt the testimony of Apostle John must be ready to doubt his gospel and epistles that have transformed lives and brought supernatural comforts and revelation of Jesus Christ to mankind for centuries. *"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth"*. He was not told or heard from a third party. He saw it himself. It was not a remodelled new heaven and earth, but a totally new heaven and a new earth. *"And there was no more sea"*. There are three types of heaven mentioned in the Bible. There is the atmospheric heaven where the rain comes from (Deuteronomy 11:11). There is the second heaven called heavenlies where we have the galaxies including the primary domain of demonic forces and angelic conflicts (Ephesians 6:12). Then we have the third heaven or paradise where God dwells (2 Corinthians 12:2). *"For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away"*. The first two heavens were passed away except the third heaven. 2 Peter 3:12, 13 reveals how this will happen. *"….. wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. "*. The earth and the heavens will be destroyed through fervent heat. Jesus Himself confirmed that heaven and earth with all their structures, beauties, learnings and philosophies shall all pass away except the Word of God (Matthew 5:18, 24:35). In fact, all the human bodies will give way to eternal and indestructible bodies. Thus, what Apostle John saw was the giving away of all things that are visible and temporary for things that are eternal. b. *"And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven"*. The earthly Jerusalem was referred to as the city of the Great King (Psalm 48:2, Matthew 5:35). This is referring to the Millennium holy Jerusalem from where Jesus will rule the whole world physically. John the apostle said that Jerusalem ceased to exist, but gave way to a completely New Jerusalem. This New Jerusalem was seen coming *"out of heaven"*. Obviously, it is seen coming from the third heaven which is the eternal throne of God. He used the imagery of the beauty of a bride coming to meet the husband to describe the beauty of heaven. This is the best description human language can give. *Prepared as a bride adorned for her husband"*. He then heard the voice of God announcing the plan of God right from eternity. What was that plan? That God will physically, live among men as King over loving subjects; as Father over His children in a happy family set up and as God over His redeemed and people. *"And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God"*. This is the beginning of heaven, happy and holy eternity. *Question* Are you getting prepared for heaven in the practical sense of it? If Not, then you don't actually, believe in heaven. *2. Pacification with Happiness* a. The Apostle further gave a glimpse of how we will feel in heaven. *"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes"*. Tears of sorrow, anguish, lost loved ones, physical and psychological pains, etc.will all be forgotten. This is difficult to imagine for man. It is like imagining how God promised that *"your sins and iniquities will I remember no more"*. We don't have a problem with God forgiving our sins, but God forgetting our sins will be difficult to imagine. We will all forget the painful past as we will be overwhelmed with the glory of God for eternity. *"There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away"*. The pains and the tears, called *"light afflictions"* will be for a moment. They will not survive the joy of eternity. b. For those who have difficulty with believing, *"he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful"*. Heaven is prepared already. When Jesus Christ was about going to heaven, He assured the disciples of going to build mansions for them. About 60 years later, when John saw the revelation, he was told by the Lord that it was done. It means it is a settled and concluded matter. *"And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end"*. In heaven there will not be any heat or tension, but total refreshments and happiness. *"I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely"*. Everything God has will be totally ours. All the gifts of God, physical or spiritual, will belong to us as possessions. Nothing needed or useful will be denied. We suffer different lacks while on earth. Heaven will be the opposite. *"He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son"*. Are you an overcomer over sin, Satan and all his temptations? *Question* What are the things you are suffering on earth? Do you see them as temporary? *3. Punishment of Hell* What are the things that will disqualify any from entering heaven? What would be the abode of those who will miss heaven? The answer is fearful. *"But the fearful, and unbelieving"*. Every evil action stems from fear and unbelief. Unbelief of what God has spoken and the consequences of disobedience, fear of man and what man can do are terrible paralysing feelings that draw men to perdition. *"And the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars"*. Notice that all those sins are now also found inside the Church among professing saints. So there will be eternal surprises when those who profess that heaven is their home find themselves in a totally different place called hell. They *"shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone*. *Question* Are you transparently free from all sins? *Prayer Points* 1.Give praises to God that you are in that number saved by grace 🙏. 2.Ask God to search your life, expose, purge and cleanse you from all disqualifying habits 🙏. 3.Pray that the vision of heaven will get brighter and brighter to you and your mind and affections will be focused on heavenly things 🙏. 4.Pray that all believers will be delivered from all forms of self deception and will take entering heaven more seriously 🙏. *HYMN:* How Beautiful Heaven Must Be. *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* JOB 16-18. His last words, as testified by survivors, were "I have seen heaven, and it is beautiful" and "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." Despite his death, Harper used his final moments to preach the gospel, expressing his deep assurance that beyond death lay a place of eternal peace. A rescued survivor testified that Harper, clinging to the wreckage, asked if he was saved and urged him to believe in Jesus Christ. The survivor later accepted Christ and called himself "the last convert of John Harper."* *Today's passage paints a breath-taking vision of the new heaven and new earth. John sees the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, descending from God, adorned like a bride. A powerful voice declares that God will dwell among His people, wiping away every tear. Death, mourning, crying, and pain will be gone forever. The former things will pass away, and everything will be made new. God, the Alpha and Omega, promises the water of life to those who thirst. But He also warns that those who reject Him (those living in sin, fear, unbelief) will face eternal separation in the lake of fire.* *In this world, we experience suffering in many forms such as loss, illness, disappointment, pain and injustice. But for those who belong to Christ, these trials are temporary. Christ assures us that a glorious future awaits us, one where God Himself will comfort us, and all suffering will cease. This hope should encourage believers to endure hardships with faith, knowing that one day, we will step into a place where joy is endless and pain is no more. It also calls us to live righteously, rejecting sin and embracing the promise of eternity with God.* *No matter what trials you face today, hold unto the hope of heaven. Let this promise strengthen your faith, drive you to share the gospel, and encourage you to live in readiness for Christ's return. A day is coming when all suffering will cease and there will be no more tears, pain or death. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫 ✍️ “𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘧𝘦𝘸 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘳 𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘺, 𝘎𝘰𝘥'𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺.” We often measure success by response—replies, reactions, results. Discouragement whispers that every effort is wasted when silence is the only response. But faithfulness matters more than fruit. Whether we are weary from silence or tempted to quit, the question is not whether people will respond—but whether we will remain faithful when they do not. God commissioned Ezekiel: “𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘵 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳, 𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘳...” (🕮 𝐄𝐳𝐞𝐤𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝟐:𝟕). Israel's heart was hardened, yet God never measured Ezekiel's ministry by the people's response but by his obedience. His task was to proclaim God’s Word faithfully, leaving the results in God's hands. A farmer cannot command the seed to grow. He faithfully prepares the soil, plants the seed, and waits, trusting God to give the increase. So it is with the Gospel. We sow God's truth, but only the Lord can awaken the heart. Our responsibility is faithfulness; God's responsibility is fruitfulness. Throughout Scripture, God reminds us that His Word never returns void (𝐈𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐚𝐡 𝟓𝟓:𝟏𝟏). Paul planted, Apollos watered, “𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦” (𝟏 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝟑:𝟔). Some rejected Christ despite hearing His own voice (𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟏𝟐:𝟑𝟕), while others gladly received Him (𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝟐:𝟒𝟏). The success of our witness is never determined by numbers but by obedience to the One who sent us. Many believers grow discouraged because they count results instead of faithfulness. “𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥; 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯, 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯” (𝟐 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝟒:𝟐). Don't preach like a salesman changing the message just to close the deal. Heaven never called us to sell the Gospel—it called us to proclaim it. Christ had experienced the most terrifying rejection. Many left Him (𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟔:𝟔𝟔), mocked Him (𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝟐𝟕:𝟑𝟗–𝟒𝟑), and crucified Him, yet He remained perfectly obedient to the Father's will (𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝟐:𝟖). Through His death, burial, and resurrection (𝟏 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝟏𝟓:𝟑–𝟒), He accomplished the salvation that no human effort ever could. We faithfully proclaim the Gospel because we belong to the faithful Saviour. Have disappointment or rejection made you reluctant to share Christ again? Will you keep measuring your faithfulness by the world's response when Christ measures it by your obedience? You don't need Christ merely to produce results—you need Him because He is the Lord of the harvest who alone changes hearts. Speak His Word. Spread the Gospel to all, whether they will hear or whether they will forbear. 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫: Heavenly Father, forgive us for becoming discouraged when we cannot see immediate results. Help us to value faithfulness above success and obedience above recognition. Give us courage to keep sowing Your truth, trusting that You alone can change hearts. In Jesus' Name. Amen. You wonder why you lived so long with it weighing you down. It’s the same with mental and emotional clutter. Jon Gordon says, ‘We fill our minds with thoughts that hold us back, habits that limit us, distractions that derail us, negative people who drain us, fear that paralyses us, time-sappers that sabotage our productivity. We spend so much time and energy on things that don’t matter—we fail to focus on what does matter. We fill up with so many things that generate negative energy, there’s no room for positive energy in our lives.’ Paul writes, ‘…throw off your…former way of life…let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes’ (vv. 22-23 NLT). The clutter you need to lose includes: believing that you’re alone, trying to please everybody, feeling insecure, putting yourself down, needing everybody to like you, jumping to negative conclusions before you know the facts, thinking you’re always right, recalling all the times you messed up, wanting to know how it all turns out, needing to have all the answers, worrying that if you let go of the memorabilia you’ll lose the memories, agonising that you’re not rich enough, good enough or clever enough, surrounding yourself with people who remember the bad times and not the good, making energy-sucking comparisons, viewing life like a movie instead of participating, believing that your best days are over, waiting at all times for the right moment, fearing you will look foolish, focusing on negative type-casting…and anything else you don’t want to pass on to your children. This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working. *Timeless Truth:* _Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths._ ( Proverbs 3:5–6) *INTRODUCTION* During the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge (1933–1937), many workers initially feared working hundreds of feet above the water. After several fatal accidents, engineers installed a massive safety net beneath the bridge. Although the net cost a significant amount of money, it saved many lives and gave workers greater confidence to continue their work. What seemed restrictive actually became a means of preservation. Similarly, God's discipline and correction may appear unpleasant or restrictive, but they are expressions of His wisdom and love. Isaiah 28 addresses Judah's misplaced confidence in political alliances rather than in God. Through the prophet, the Lord warned that every false refuge would fail, yet He also revealed that His judgments are purposeful, measured and redemptive. The illustration of the farmer (vv. 23–29) teaches that just as a skilled farmer knows the proper method and timing for cultivating each crop, God perfectly knows how to deal with His people. *For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.* (Hebrews 12:6) God's discipline is never arbitrary; it is guided by infinite wisdom and aimed at producing righteousness. Our heavenly Father knows every detail of our lives. He knows when to comfort, when to correct, when to wait and when to act. What may seem confusing or painful to us is never without purpose in His hands. Sometimes God allows difficult seasons to break the hard soil of pride. At other times He plants seeds of truth, waters them with His grace and patiently waits for spiritual fruit. Even His discipline is measured by perfect wisdom and infinite love. Therefore, let us not resist His work, but submit to it. Let us abandon every false refuge and place our complete confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ—the sure foundation that will never fail. As we trust Him, we will discover that His wisdom is flawless, His discipline is loving and His purposes are always for our good and His glory. *1. The Collapse of False Confidence* a. Judah trusted in deceptive alliances instead of depending on God. Their "covenant with death" would be annulled because no human refuge can replace God's protection. The Bible says: *Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.*(Psalm 20:7) Isaiah describes a bed too short and a covering too narrow, illustrating the insufficiency of human solutions. b. God's judgment is described as His "unusual work," showing that while He is just, He takes no delight in punishing His people. When we build our lives on wealth, influence, intellect or human security instead of Christ, disappointment is inevitable. *Questions* (i) What am I trusting most for my security—God or human resources? (ii) Have I built my life upon Christ, the only sure foundation? *2. The Counsel of Perfect Wisdom* a. Isaiah invites the people to observe the wisdom of a farmer who works with understanding. The farmer knows when to plow, sow and cultivate because God teaches him. The farmer does not plow endlessly; each season has its purpose. *“To everything there is a season.”* (Ecclesiastes 3:1) b. Every action is intended to produce a fruitful harvest. *“No chastening seems to be joyful... nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness.”* (Hebrews 12:11). God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. His timing and methods are always perfect. *Questions* (i) Am I patiently submitting to God's process even when I do not fully understand it? (ii) Do I seek God's wisdom before making important decisions? *3. The Compassion of God's Discipline* a. Our text concludes with the illustration that different crops require different methods of threshing, demonstrating God's wisdom and moderation. The farmer adjusts his methods according to the crop. Likewise, God disciplines each believer wisely and appropriately. God never disciplines beyond what is necessary to accomplish His purpose. b. Isaiah concludes by praising God's wonderful counsel and excellent wisdom. Even when God's dealings are difficult to understand, we can trust that they are always governed by love, wisdom and grace. *Questions* (i) Do I view God's discipline as punishment or as a loving correction designed for my growth? (ii) Am I willing to let God shape my character through His refining work? *Prayer Points* 1. Lord, help me to place my confidence entirely in You and not in human strength or worldly security.🙏 2. Father, grant me wisdom to understand Your ways and to make decisions that honour You.🙏 3. Lord, give me a teachable heart that receives Your correction with humility and obedience.🙏 4. The text describes the bed as too short, and the covering too narrow. This tells us that trusting and resting on our own will and self-management will result in regret and gross disappointment. Religion is not enough; true righteousness from Christ must be carefully sought and wisely husbanded.* *Prophet Isaiah compares God's work among the nations to those of a farmer on his soil. The husbandman (farmer) does his work with pains and prudence and handles the plants according to their nature. The Almighty God who gives men this great wisdom is wonderful in counsel and excellent in His working.* *Afflictions are God's threshing instruments to loosen us from the world, to part between us and our chaff, and to prepare us for use. As the occasion requires, the Lord warns, corrects, spares, shows mercy or executes vengeance. How we need to heed God's warning today and not to trust in anything outside Christ. It takes trust and diligence to please God. It is like a ritual that is observed in commemoration of their independence from colonial or oppressive masters. Each country has her special day of the year to celebrate its independence. The children of Israel were once slaves in Egypt. God then led them out of slavery through Moses their leader. Independence means freedom to exercise your human rights. This is the physical meaning. In the spiritual, it is different. Independence means total deliverance from sin and all its influence. No one can become free without knowing and accepting the Truth. This Truth is God's word, which Jesus represents. Jesus is the word of God that was from the beginning, and is forever. *To be free therefore, a sinner must take these steps: Acknowledge his sinfulness. Repent and confess his sins to God. Pray for forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Jesus. Ask Jesus into your heart to be your personal Saviour and Lord.* *Continue with the Truth that sets free by praying every day, reading, meditating on and obeying God's word. The children of Israel were once slaves in Egypt. God then led them out of slavery through Moses their leader. Independence means freedom to exercise your human rights. This is the physical meaning. In the spiritual, it is different. Independence means total deliverance from sin and all its influence. No one can become free without knowing and accepting the Truth. This Truth is God's word, which Jesus represents. Jesus is the word of God that was from the beginning, and is forever. *To be free therefore, a sinner must take these steps: Acknowledge his sinfulness. Repent and confess his sins to God. Jon Gordon says, ‘We fill our minds with thoughts that hold us back, habits that limit us, distractions that derail us, negative people who drain us, fear that paralyses us, time-sappers that sabotage our productivity. We spend so much time and energy on things that don’t matter—we fail to focus on what does matter. After several fatal accidents, engineers installed a massive safety net beneath the bridge. Although the net cost a significant amount of money, it saved many lives and gave workers greater confidence to continue their work. What seemed restrictive actually became a means of preservation. Similarly, God's discipline and correction may appear unpleasant or restrictive, but they are expressions of His wisdom and love. Isaiah 28 addresses Judah's misplaced confidence in political alliances rather than in God. Through the prophet, the Lord warned that every false refuge would fail, yet He also revealed that His judgments are purposeful, measured and redemptive. The illustration of the farmer (vv. 23–29) teaches that just as a skilled farmer knows the proper method and timing for cultivating each crop, God perfectly knows how to deal with His people. *For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.* (Hebrews 12:6) God's discipline is never arbitrary; it is guided by infinite wisdom and aimed at producing righteousness. Our heavenly Father knows every detail of our lives. He knows when to comfort, when to correct, when to wait and when to act. What may seem confusing or painful to us is never without purpose in His hands. Sometimes God allows difficult seasons to break the hard soil of pride. At other times He plants seeds of truth, waters them with His grace and patiently waits for spiritual fruit. Even His discipline is measured by perfect wisdom and infinite love. Therefore, let us not resist His work, but submit to it. Let us abandon every false refuge and place our complete confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ—the sure foundation that will never fail. As we trust Him, we will discover that His wisdom is flawless, His discipline is loving and His purposes are always for our good and His glory. *1. The Collapse of False Confidence* a. Judah trusted in deceptive alliances instead of depending on God. Their "covenant with death" would be annulled because no human refuge can replace God's protection. The Bible says: *Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.*(Psalm 20:7) Isaiah describes a bed too short and a covering too narrow, illustrating the insufficiency of human solutions. b. God's judgment is described as His "unusual work," showing that while He is just, He takes no delight in punishing His people. When we build our lives on wealth, influence, intellect or human security instead of Christ, disappointment is inevitable. *Questions* (i) What am I trusting most for my security—God or human resources? (ii) Have I built my life upon Christ, the only sure foundation? *2. The Counsel of Perfect Wisdom* a. Isaiah invites the people to observe the wisdom of a farmer who works with understanding. The farmer knows when to plow, sow and cultivate because God teaches him. The farmer does not plow endlessly; each season has its purpose. *“To everything there is a season.”* (Ecclesiastes 3:1) b. Every action is intended to produce a fruitful harvest. *“No chastening seems to be joyful... nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness.”* (Hebrews 12:11). God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. His timing and methods are always perfect. *Questions* (i) Am I patiently submitting to God's process even when I do not fully understand it? (ii) Do I seek God's wisdom before making important decisions? *3. The Compassion of God's Discipline* a. Our text concludes with the illustration that different crops require different methods of threshing, demonstrating God's wisdom and moderation. The farmer adjusts his methods according to the crop. Likewise, God disciplines each believer wisely and appropriately. God never disciplines beyond what is necessary to accomplish His purpose. b. Isaiah concludes by praising God's wonderful counsel and excellent wisdom. We spend so much time and energy on things that don’t matter—we fail to focus on what does matter. Therefore, let us not resist His work, but submit to it. Let us abandon every false refuge and place our complete confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ—the sure foundation that will never fail. As we trust Him, we will discover that His wisdom is flawless, His discipline is loving and His purposes are always for our good and His glory. *1. The Collapse of False Confidence* a. (ii) Have I built my life upon Christ, the only sure foundation? *2. The Counsel of Perfect Wisdom* a. Isaiah invites the people to observe the wisdom of a farmer who works with understanding. The farmer knows when to plow, sow and cultivate because God teaches him. The farmer does not plow endlessly; each season has its purpose. *“To everything there is a season.”* (Ecclesiastes 3:1) b. Every action is intended to produce a fruitful harvest. *“No chastening seems to be joyful... nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness.”* (Hebrews 12:11). God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. His timing and methods are always perfect. *Questions* (i) Am I patiently submitting to God's process even when I do not fully understand it? (ii) Do I seek God's wisdom before making important decisions? *3. The Compassion of God's Discipline* a. Our text concludes with the illustration that different crops require different methods of threshing, demonstrating God's wisdom and moderation. The farmer adjusts his methods according to the crop. Likewise, God disciplines each believer wisely and appropriately. God never disciplines beyond what is necessary to accomplish His purpose. b. Isaiah concludes by praising God's wonderful counsel and excellent wisdom. Even when God's dealings are difficult to understand, we can trust that they are always governed by love, wisdom and grace. *Questions* (i) Do I view God's discipline as punishment or as a loving correction designed for my growth? In the spiritual, it is different. Independence means total deliverance from sin and all its influence. No one can become free without knowing and accepting the Truth. This Truth is God's word, which Jesus represents. Jesus is the word of God that was from the beginning, and is forever. *To be free therefore, a sinner must take these steps: Acknowledge his sinfulness. Repent and confess his sins to God. The farmer knows when to plow, sow and cultivate because God teaches him. The farmer does not plow endlessly; each season has its purpose. *“To everything there is a season.”* (Ecclesiastes 3:1) b. Every action is intended to produce a fruitful harvest. *“No chastening seems to be joyful... nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness.”* (Hebrews 12:11). God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. His timing and methods are always perfect. *Questions* (i) Am I patiently submitting to God's process even when I do not fully understand it? (ii) Do I seek God's wisdom before making important decisions? *3. The Compassion of God's Discipline* a. Our text concludes with the illustration that different crops require different methods of threshing, demonstrating God's wisdom and moderation. The farmer adjusts his methods according to the crop. Likewise, God disciplines each believer wisely and appropriately. God never disciplines beyond what is necessary to accomplish His purpose. b. Isaiah concludes by praising God's wonderful counsel and excellent wisdom. Even when God's dealings are difficult to understand, we can trust that they are always governed by love, wisdom and grace. *Questions* (i) Do I view God's discipline as punishment or as a loving correction designed for my growth? Religion is not enough; true righteousness from Christ must be carefully sought and wisely husbanded.* *Prophet Isaiah compares God's work among the nations to those of a farmer on his soil. The husbandman (farmer) does his work with pains and prudence and handles the plants according to their nature. The Almighty God who gives men this great wisdom is wonderful in counsel and excellent in His working.* *Afflictions are God's threshing instruments to loosen us from the world, to part between us and our chaff, and to prepare us for use. As the occasion requires, the Lord warns, corrects, spares, shows mercy or executes vengeance. How we need to heed God's warning today and not to trust in anything outside Christ. It is like a ritual that is observed in commemoration of their independence from colonial or oppressive masters. Each country has her special day of the year to celebrate its independence. The children of Israel were once slaves in Egypt. God then led them out of slavery through Moses their leader. Independence means freedom to exercise your human rights. This is the physical meaning. In the spiritual, it is different. Independence means total deliverance from sin and all its influence. No one can become free without knowing and accepting the Truth. This Truth is God's word, which Jesus represents. Jesus is the word of God that was from the beginning, and is forever. *To be free therefore, a sinner must take these steps: Acknowledge his sinfulness. Repent and confess his sins to God. Pray for forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Jesus.
