His original name was Giuseppe Melchior Sarto. He was ordained a priest on September 18, 1858 and was made Bishop in December, 1879. He was elevated as Cardinal by Pope Leo\\-XIII on June 12, 1893. He was elected as Pope on August 4, 1903 and took charge as Pope on August 9, 1903 as Pope Pius\\-X, as the 257th pontiff. He headed the Catholic Church from 1903 to 1914. He was devoted to Mother Mary and was very charitable. He served the victims of Messina earth quake of 1908 in his own Apostolic Palace. He did no favor to his family members. His brother worked as a postal clerk and his three sisters lived in close poverty near Rome. When other people reminded the Pope about the condition of his sisters, he used to tell “I made them the sisters of a pope, what else can I do for them?” He is regarded as the "Pope of Blessed Sacrament". He reduced the age limit of reason and to receive holy communion from 12 years to 7 years, in the year 1910 by the decree “Quam Singulari”. The last words he spoke before death were "To restore all things in Christ". He died on August 20, 1914.

Many miracles are attributed to this saint. One paralyzed child held by St. Pius\\-X during a papal audience, wriggled free from his arms and ran around the room, on getting miraculous cure from the disease. Another child aged 2 years also got cure from meningitis by the prayer of St. Pius\\-X. His body was intact to a great extent, when exhumed on May 19, 1944.

He was beatified by Pope Pius\\-XII on June 3, 1951and canonized on May 29, 1954..

  • St. Clare

She was born on July 16, 1194 in Assisi, Italy. Her father was Favorino Scifi, the Count of Sasso and mother Orto Lana. Since her parents were of noble family, they wanted take St. Clare to their home, when she became a nun against their will. She refused to return to home and told her parents that God has called for her service. She was one of the first followers of St. Francis of Assisi. She founded an Order of Nuns named Order of Poor Ladies. The Order was renamed as Order of Saint Clare and also called as Poor Clares after the death of St. Clare, by Pope Urban-IV in the year 1263. One day some enemy soldiers came to raid the convent, where St. Clare was residing. St. Clare placed the Blessed Sacrament before the soldiers and she kneeled down to pray. Suddenly the enemy soldiers fled from the convent, due to some sudden fright struck the soldiers. The prayer of St. Clare and her faith in the Blessed Sacrament saved the nuns of the convent on that day. She died on August 11, 1253. She was canonized by Pope Alexander-IV on August 15, 1255, as St. Clare of Assisi. She is considered as the patron of sore eyes. Pope Pius-XII designated her as the patron saint of television in the year 1958.

  • Saint of the Day — 15 June
    Saint Germaine Cousin
    The Girl Nobody Wanted

    By the world's standards —
    she had nothing.

    Born in 1579
    in Pibrac, France,
    Germaine came into the world
    already disadvantaged.

    Her right hand was crippled
    from birth.

    She suffered from scrofula —
a disease of the lymph nodes
    that left painful sores
    on her neck.

    Her mother died young.

    And when her father remarried,
    her stepmother made clear
    from the beginning:

    Germaine was not wanted.

She was sent to sleep in the stable.
    Fed the scraps.
    Given the hardest work —
    tending sheep alone
    in the fields,
    day after day.

If she was caught slipping inside
    to warm herself,
    she was beaten.

    She had no friends.
    The village children mocked her.
    Even the other servants
    kept their distance.

    By every human measure —
    she was forgotten.

    And yet.

    Something happened in those fields
that the world could not see.

    Germaine prayed.

    Not prayers of bitterness.
    Not prayers demanding justice.

    Prayers of surrender.
    Of trust.
    Of love.

    She stuck her shepherd's crook
    in the ground
    and left the sheep —
trusting God to keep them safe —

while she walked to daily Mass.

And the sheep were always safe
    when she returned.

She shared her small portion of bread
    with beggars poorer than herself.

    She loved without expectation.

She gave without anything left to give.

And then one June morning in 1601 —
she was found dead in her straw bed.

    She was twenty-two years old.

    The miracles began immediately.

Children were healed at her grave.
    Her body was found incorrupt
    decades later.

In 1867 — Pope Pius IX canonised her.

And here is what stayed with me:

The people who called her worthless
    were wrong.

The God who never stopped looking
    was right.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
    — Psalm 34:18

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
    — Matthew 5:3

    Prayer

    Saint Germaine,
you were overlooked by everyone —
    except God.

    Help me to trust
that the eyes which matter most
    have never stopped watching.

    When I feel forgotten,
    rejected, or unseen —

    remind me that God's gaze
    never leaves His beloved.

    And help me today
to see the person in my life
who feels the way you did —

    and choose to see them.

    Amen.

    Truth for Today

The world decides worth by what you have.
God decides worth by who you are.

    Reflection

Is there someone in your life
    who feels forgotten right now?
    One small act of noticing
    might change everything.

    Comment "Amen"
or "St. Germaine, pray for us"

  • St. Anthony of Padua

St. Anthony was born on August 15, 1195 at Lisbon in an aristocratic and wealthy family and his birth name was Fernando Martins de Bulhoes. His father was Vincente Martins de Bulhoes and mother Teresa Pais Taveira. Anthony's father was the descendant of the famous Godfrey de Bouillin, the commander of the First Crusade (1095\\-1101) and his mother was the descendant of Froila\\-I, the fourth king of Asturia. He first entered into the community of Canons Regular at the Abbey of St. Vincent in Lisbon. At that time some five friars of the Franciscan Order were martyred in Morocco on January 16, 1220. On hearing the news of the martyrdom of the Franciscan Friars, Anthony wanted to join the Franciscan Order to become a martyr for Christ. Anthony joined the small hermitage in Olives and adopted the name Anthony, in the name of the church there dedicated to St. Anthony the Great. He set out for Morocco for missionary work but could not go there due to sickness but instead went to Italy. On one ordination occasion, the head of the hermitage where St. Anthony was staying called Anthony to give the sermon, as the Dominican friars were unprepared for it and the head of the hermitage could not find any suitable person from the Franciscan order to give sermon on that day. Anthony's rich voice and the entire theme and substance of his sermon and his eloquence attracted everyone present there. After this incident Anthony was commissioned to preach Gospel throughout Lombardy in Northern Italy.

Many miracles happened at the hands of Anthony when he was alive.

One day a horse which was fasting for three days, even refused to take oats placed before it, till it had knelt down and adored the Blessed Sacrament held by St. Anthony in his hands. This miracle happened in a place called Rimini.

In another occasion some Italian heretics gave poisoned food to St. Anthony. But St. Anthony made the poisoned food eatable by the sign of the cross.

He once preached to the fishes by standing on the bank of river Brenta near Padua.

Once when St. Anthony was on his way to Italy, he stayed in the castle of Chateauneuf\\-la\\-Foret in the province of Limousine. In that palace Infant Jesus appeared to St. Anthony and came down and stood on the Bible held by St. Anthony. On the basis of this apparition only, St. Anthony of Padua is depicted in art holding a bible on which the Infant Jesus stands.

In yet another occasion St. Anthony and his companions stayed in the house of a poor woman during a journey and she gave bread and wine to St. Anthony and others. But she forgot to close the tap of the wine\\-barrel and the wine was wasted. In that time one of Anthony's companions broke the glass tumbler by inadvertence. St. Anthony started to pray and suddenly the broken glass tumbler was made whole and the wine\\-barrel filled anew with wine.

St. Anthony died on June 13, 1231 when he was just 36 years old. St. Anthony was canonized by pope Gregory\\-IX on May 30, 1232 within one year of his death. He was also proclaimed Doctor of the Church by pope Pius\\-XII on January 16, 1946. His body was exhumed many years after his death and it was found that his tongue was found incorrupt.

  • Sacred Heart of Jesus

    Feast of the Sacred Heart:

    Date and Celebration:
    - The Feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated annually 19 days after Pentecost, always on a Friday. It honors the Sacred Heart of Jesus, depicted in art as a flaming heart surrounded by thorns, pierced by a lance, and topped with a cross, symbolizing His love and sacrifice.

    Origins and Revelation:
    - The devotion to the Sacred Heart began with the mystical experiences of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun born on July 22, 1647. She reported visions of Jesus Christ starting on December 27, 1673, where He revealed His Sacred Heart and expressed His desire for this devotion to be widespread.
    - In her second vision on June 6, 1675, Jesus disclosed His deep love for humanity despite its ingratitude. These revelations led to the private observance of the feast in her convent in 1686 and the establishment of a chapel in Paray-le-Monial in 1688.

    Papal Endorsement:
    - The feast gained official recognition when Pope Pius XII endorsed it through his encyclical "Haurietis aquas" on May 15, 1956. Pope Benedict XVI reaffirmed its significance in a letter dated May 15, 2006, to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus.

    Significance:
    - The Feast of the Sacred Heart emphasizes Jesus' immense love and compassion for humanity. It serves as a reminder of His sacrifice and divine mercy, highlighting His unwavering love and the call for believers to reflect on and respond to this love.

  • St. Justin

St. Justin was born in Flavia Neopolis in the modern day West Bank, Palestine in the year about 110 A.D. in a pagan family. His father was Priscos. St. Justin was influenced by the fearless conduct of the Christians facing execution for the cause of Christian faith. He was converted to Christianity in Ephesus in about the year 130 A.D. He adopted the dress of a philosopher and travelled to various places for preaching. He started a school in Rome to teach poor people, when Emperor Antonius Pius was reigning. When there was a dispute with another philosopher, the other philosopher informed the authorities about the conversion of Justin to Christianity and his preaching of Christian faith. Then St. Justin along with other six of his companions were arrested and tried by the urban Roman prefect Junius Rusticus during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
