Ahead of this year’s Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral, The King shared an Easter message to all who celebrated.

Psalm 22:22 I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise You. 

Psalm 22 was written by David and starts out pretty bleak. But midway through we see a shift from lament to praise. And once more, just as we have learned on other days this month, we are reminded that there are many opportunities to praise God each day.

Here we see David planning to praise God to the people, to the assembly. He said “I will declare” - future tense. He chose to offer public praise to God, not just on his own, but in the future and before everyone. His praise was a conscious choice he made to honor and glorify God. 

Many scholars say Psalm 22 is the perfect description of the suffering Christ faced a thousand years after these words were recorded by David. In this instance, David takes on the role of prophet and gives us words that can easily be applied to what Jesus did for us on the cross. Jesus even quoted the psalm from the cross. Hebrews 2:11 cites Psalm 22:22 - but rather than the Israelites being the ones hearing the praises, it is everyone - Jew and Gentile alike. 

Are you declaring His Name to the people? Are you praising Him for what He has given you? His sacrifice on the cross was made for you. He knew you and I were sinners and needed a perfect sacrifice to save us. He willingly gave His own life for us, His blood washing away our sins and making us white as snow. 

Knowing this, I will proudly and reverently praise His Name to anyone who will listen. I will be like David and go before the assembly to praise Him. Will you?
