- Isaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
In today’s verse, the prophet Isaiah assures weary and powerless Israelites that God has their back. Or rather, he assures them God would provide for all of their needs, including strength and power. If you have ever been in a position where life seems to be hitting you hard and beating you up, you know just how discouraging it can be and how spiritually and physically exhausted you become. Having strength to endure and the power to overcome don’t come to us naturally, but with God we don’t have to worry about that because HE provides that for us. In our weakness, He is strong.
Up to this point, the book of Isaiah had focused on the coming judgement that people of Israel were going to face if they did not repent and change their ways. But then you come to chapter 40 and the tone of the book shifts from judgement and the prophesied doom to a message of hope and encouragement. God knew His people were feeling the despair and the loss of hope and out of His love and grace, He offered consolation, hope, and encouragement to carry them through.
God doesn’t grow weary or weak. He is God. He is infinite, amazing, and all powerful. He is the source of everything - of life, of hope, of grace, of strength and power. He is the Creator. He gives and He takes. He took them away from all they knew, all they had ever known, and exiled them as punishment for their rebellion.
But He didn’t do it without a plan for renewal and redemption. And He did not hide that face from His people. We have today’s verse as a prime example of His grace in our lives. His glory doesn’t just manifest itself in His power, but it also shows in His eagerness to share that with those He calls His. He shares His power, His strength, and His grace with His creation, infusing us with what we need to make it through the day, the hour, through minute by minute.
And that power is available to you. You, too, can feel the grace He gives as He fills you with His supernatural strength and lends you His power. It is the same response that He asked for from the Israelites during their exile. Repent and turn to Him. Stop living a life of rebellion. Stop letting your heart be hardened and instead let it be turned to flesh (see yesterday’s devotion for more on that if you missed it). And start living your life for Him, feeling His power and strength within you.

- James 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.
Yesterday we talked about enduring or persevering in the face of hardship. Today’s verse continues in the same theme, though it is written from James instead of from the book of Hebrews. It serves as a final exhortation for believers as James wraps up his letter.
James uses an analogy to make his point. He compares our wait on the Lord to that of a farmer. Just as farmers wait for the early and late rains, which are crucial to their agricultural needs, we, too, are to wait in patience for the Lord’s coming. The farmer waits to receive their crops and believers must endure in hope of the future harvest of righteousness. The word used for waits is a present tense verb which indicates that the waiting process is ongoing, without end or not ceasing.
The context emphasizes that like a farmer working until the harvest, believers should continue to do good and not succumb to apathy. Patience is not something we are good at, usually, but sometimes we have no choice but to be patient as we await the outcome. A farmer can’t impatiently dig up their crops early to see how they are doing and if they are ready yet. They will ruin things and have nothing in the end. They have to be patient or risk losing everything. And sometimes that is true for you and I. Like it or not, in many cases we have no choice but to wait patiently for the outcome.
The ultimate wait we experience is the return of Christ. He promised He would come again and we see it in prophecy. We know it is going to happen. When, we do not know. But we wait patiently for the day it happens knowing that He will fulfill His promise.
Until that day, we move through life learning to be patient through the experiences we have. Each trial, each situation, each challenge is another lesson in patience and waiting on the Lord. Are you learning to wait on Him patiently?

- Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…
For long time readers, you will recognize today’s verse. We have studied it in the past and will likely study it in the future because it is a verse that has many components that can be explored. Today we look at how patience applies when we speak of the Fruit of the Spirit.
You will notice that the word “patience” does not appear in the translation that we have used (which is NIV). Instead, we see the word “forbearance.” Though not exactly the same as patience, it is closely related. Forbearance, as it is used in the Bible, refers to holding back, enduring, or exercising patience, self-control, and mercy. It is a characteristic of God and a result of the Holy Spirit working in the believer.
We have examples of people who patiently waited and endured in suffering. Jesus is the ultimate example of patience who suffered for our sins and saved us. We also have David as an example of forbearance - he waited many years before he was able to become king and during that time he trusted in God’s timing over his own. There were women who patiently waited for God to open their womb and bless them with children of their own, suffering and crying out to the Lord. There are many, many examples from the Bible that we can pattern our own waiting and endurance after.
While often translated with patience, forbearance often implies a "holding back" of action, whereas patience (long-suffering) is an endurance that one sustains over time.
Are you in a season of waiting currently? Perhaps you are waiting on God to provide you with a spouse. Perhaps you are awaiting the blessing of children in your home. Or maybe it is waiting on God’s timing for you to step into your destiny and make a way for yourself in this world. Whatever the season, trust that He is working and has a plan for your life. He will see you through the times when you must hold back and wait on Him to guide you forward. Be patient and don’t lose hope! A breakthrough is coming!
