LOVE THAT OVERCOMES

There’s an interesting story in Numbers that contrasts two ways of looking at obstacles. The Israelites have escaped slavery in Egypt and traveled to the edge of the Promised Land. And before they all enter, Moses sends 12 men to spy it out.

One spy named Caleb comes back with this report:

“Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” (Numbers 13:30)

What a great faith statement! Unfortunately his confidence was not shared by others.

But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. There we saw the giants; … and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13:31, 33)

Why did they have that viewpoint? Because of how they viewed themselves. If we look at a problem and say, “I’m just a grasshopper,” then we fail before we start. We defeat ourselves if we think we can’t go somewhere or do something that God has commanded.

In our world today, we can face all kinds of threats and fears. Yet we need to resist and declare, “We can overcome this.”

What image are we made in—a grasshopper's? No. We are made in the image of God.

So now the question is, do we act like Him? Do we think like Him? And most importantly, do we love like Him?

As John 3:16 says,

“God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son.”

Let His heart of love resonate through everything that you do.

Love casts out fear. Love overcomes all obstacles. Faith works through love. When you have that, you are reflecting the image of the Father. You’re truly becoming like Him.

Paul, who faced incredible persecution, wrote,

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love. (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

When we do this, we are more than overcomers. As Romans 8:37 explains, we are more than conquerors through the love of Christ given to us. We need to view ourselves as God’s love extending to a hurting world. And when we overflow with His love, no obstacle can stand—for His love never fails.

Living on the Edge

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

The shouts ran through the camp like wildfire, “The spies are back! The spies are back!” The Israelites were camped in the wilderness of Paran, just outside the Promised Land which God had described to Moses as “a good and large land…flowing with milk and honey.” Exodus 3:8.

Twelve men had been sent to spy out the land—the strength of the people, their dwellings and strongholds, their soil, and their timber. Anticipation ran high for 40 days, and now they were back with pomegranates, figs, and a giant cluster of grapes! Can you imagine the look on the children’s faces?

The spies were excited. “We went to the land where you sent us,” they said. “It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.” Numbers 13:27. Time seemed to stand still as everyone pondered the prospects of a new life. Then suddenly, like a gong, someone said the word “nevertheless,” and the bliss was broken as ten of the twelve spies drew their attention to the obstacles. “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants,” they added, “and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants… and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Number 13:32–33. Swiftly, by their report, those ten men managed to sway over 500,000 people to distrust their God who had brought them out of Egypt!

One man, however, hadn’t lost sight of the promise. Caleb, the leader of the tribe of Judah “quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’” Numbers 13:30.

It was called the Land of Promise because it was exactly that—the land promised by God. Entrance to it depended on their trust in God’s promise. Here was the great issue that has always been at the core of our human experience: Trust in man, or trust in God. Would they depend on their own strength? Or would they depend on His strength and promise? Their response would decide their future.

Today, we are also on the edge of the Promised Land. Global warming, the world economy, crime, disease, natural disasters—all these signs point to the fact that a huge crisis is coming. But so is our Lord! God’s Word has not left us ignorant concerning the challenges that lie ahead. The Bible says, “And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation….” Daniel 12:1. Our great challenge will simply be to trust and obey. Do we enter daily life clothed in works of righteousness we have done? Or is our strength in the Lord and in the power of His might? (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 6:10.)

Only two of those 12 spies were allowed to enter into Canaan—Caleb and Joshua—for the Lord was grieved with that generation (Psalm 95:10). But I’m so glad to know there will be many more who will enter into glory, for the Apostle John says, “I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands.” Revelation 7:9.

We are not called to view the future through the stained glass of human experience, but to keep our eyes on Jesus, “the author and finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:2.

NEVER BECOME TOO OLD FOR WAR

Many believers think there comes a point where they can stop fighting. They have been in church for years, they know the Scriptures, they have experience, and they assume the battles are behind them. That is not the picture the Bible gives us.

Look at Caleb. At eighty-five years old, he was not asking for an easy inheritance. He was asking for the mountain occupied by giants (Joshua 14:10–12). While others would have looked for somewhere peaceful to settle, Caleb asked for the hardest territory.

His age had not changed his attitude. He said the same strength he had forty years earlier was still with him. He had not spent his life pursuing comfort. He had spent his life preparing to drive out God's enemies. That is the mindset believers are meant to have.

The problem with many Christians is not that they have grown old. It is that they have grown comfortable.

Some people have been born again for ten or fifteen years and already speak as though they have arrived. They assume maturity means the fighting is over.

The question is not, "How long have I been saved?" The question is, "Is there still an enemy occupying territory that belongs to God?"

As long as there is something resisting God's will in your life or around you, there is still work to do.

That enemy may be sin. It may be fear. It may be pride. It may be a mindset that has survived for years. Whatever it is, your assignment has not changed.

Caleb refused to let age become an excuse. Abraham fought kings in old age. David spent his life fighting the Lord's battles. These men did not retire from spiritual warfare because they had lived long.

God is still looking for people who refuse to stop fighting until every enemy has been driven out.

Ask God to show you the enemies still occupying space in your life. Then fight. Not with excuses. Not with resignation but with the determination of Caleb.
