• Lesley Sumrall :
Smith Wigglesworth knew these pioneers who were British intimately. He knew the pioneers of Pentecostalism. He often ministered with the Jeffreys, Donald Gee, Howard Carter, T.B.
Barratt of Norway, Stanley Frodsham, and most of the others I have mentioned.
Of a truth, he was born in very favorable times, surrounded by unusual men who blessed and inspired one another. And, like many other great men, he came from a humble beginning. Much of this has been told in detail in Frodsham's books and in books by others about Wigglesworth .He was hardly known beyond his hometown of Bradford until he was forty-eight years old when he received the Pentecostal experience at Sunderland under the ministry of Episcopal Vicar Alexander Boddy and his wife. Until this time, Wigglesworth was a plumber and assisted his wife, Polly, in a mission. She did the preaching, and he greeted people at the door, passed out books, and counseled at the altar.
From the time Wigglesworth was six years old, he helped support his family, first by pulling turnips then by working in a factory with his brother and his father. Because he was deprived of an education, he never learned to read until he was an adult. In fact, his wife taught him to read. In later years, he said that he never read anything but the Bible.
Wigglesworth was converted at eight years of age at a Wesleyan Methodist Church. At ten, he changed to the Church of England and was confirmed. He was sixteen when he went to the Salvation Army. At twenty he moved to Liverpool to work. He won hundreds to Christ, particularly the poor children who lived near the docks. He fed them from his salary and preached Jesus to them.
At twenty-three, Wigglesworth returned to Bradford, where he made his home for the remaining days of his life.
There, he opened his own plumbing business and met the young lady who was to become his wife.
Wigglesworth received healing from a ruptured appendix. As a result, he said that God gave him great faith to pray for people suffering with appendicitis. He began his healing ministry before he was baptized in the Spirit. He usually concluded his sermons by praying for the sick.
Polly Wigglesworth died before her husband began to be well-known and to preach extensively in other countries. In his later years, he became one of the best-known evangelists in the Pentecostal movement.
He was accused of being "rough" with people, but he was never accused of being weak in faith.
Of course, I heard about him long before I ever met him.
In Sidney, Australia, a pastor asked me, "Have you ever met Smith Wigglesworth?"
I said, "Not yet. I'm on my way. I'm going to find him somewhere. I have heard of some of the miraculous things that happen in his unique ministry."
The pastor said, "He was here in my city recently, and did we ever have a time! I took him to one of the fanciest restaurants to have lunch on Sunday. When we came into the restaurant, someone took his coat and hung it up for him. He looked around like an eagle. Only wealthy people ate in this restaurant. Instead of sitting down, he took a fork and began to hit the side of his glass with it. Bing! Bing! Bing! Bing!
    Everybody stopped eating.
"Here was Wigglesworth, a handsome-looking man, beating his water glass. Then he raised his hand and said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, I have noticed since arriving here that none of you prayed over your food. You resemble a bunch of hogs to me. You just jump in and eat without giving thanks to the One Who provided it for you. Bow your heads, and I'll pray for you.'"
The pastor told me, "I could have crawled under the table very easily and gotten out of the way so people wouldn't see me. Wigglesworth raised his hands and prayed for those people. Before we left the restaurant however, two families came over and got saved. Then I was ashamed of myself for not being as strong as Wigglesworth."
Wigglesworth's ministry centered on salvation, healing, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He was strong in character and created his own atmosphere wherever he went.

After receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Lord spoke to Wigglesworth to prepare a banquet for the poor, the lame, and the blind. He secured tickets and hired two people to
go throughout the city and find the afflicted, the tormented, and the crippled and bring them to a supper he would provide at the mission.
He often said the sight of those suppers was beyond description, and that this was the happiest time of his life. The mighty healings that took place during those times increased
    Wigglesworth's faith.

During the 1920s, he came to America on severalevangelistic tours. The first time I heard any specific details of his ministry was in San Francisco before starting around the world with Howard Carter.
I was preaching at the Glad Tidings Tabernacle, which seated more than three thousand people.
People said to me, "Have you met Smith Wigglesworth?"
I said, "No, not yet," and they told me he had been there in the same tabernacle where I was preaching. They told me of a cancer patient brought to the healing service.
Wigglesworth went down the line, saying, "What'sup?"
British-ese for "What is wrong with you?"
When he got to this man lying on a bed wearing only a little hospital gown that tied in the back, Wigglesworth asked the doctor with the man, "What's up?"
The doctor explained that his patient was dying of cancer.
Wigglesworth asked, "Where is it?" and the doctor replied, "In his stomach."
The evangelist promptly balled up his fist and hit the man in the stomach so hard the man appeared to die. His hands fell off the bed, and the doctor began to scream, "He's dead! He's dead!"
He looked up at Wigglesworth and said, "You've killed him! The family will sue you!"
Wigglesworth calmly looked at the doctor and said, "E's 'ealed." He talked with a Yorkshire accent, not pronouncing his "h's."
He did not stop but kept on walking down the line praying. About ten minutes later, the man came down the line behind Wigglesworth on the platform. He had stood up, moved the doctor to one side, and was walking around in that funny little hospital gown with his backside hanging out before more than three thousand people!
He did not have one thought for his appearance, however. He had his up hands over his head and was screaming, "I'm healed! I'm healed!"
Even the doctor had developed faith. He was right behind the sick bed yelling, "He's healed! He's healed!"
The man caught up with Wigglesworth and said, "I have no pain. I feel wonderful inside. I have energy I have not had for I don't know how long," but Wigglesworth never even
turned around to look at him.
He just said, "Well, thank God for it," and went on praying for people. It was no big surprise to Wigglesworth. He already knew the man was healed.

That was the first time I had heard a detailed story of Wigglesworth's ministry, although I had heard about him since I was a small boy. After hearing this story, I thought, "Say! Someday I want to meet him."

Then I went to New Zealand and Australia and heard more stories, including the incident in the restaurant, which only increased my desire to meet this man. When I met him I was not disappointed. He was just what I expected him to be from all that I had heard about him from the people of the nations I had visited, where he had conducted meetings.
Some ministers found Wigglesworth too strong in faith, and that frightened them. Also, he was strong in rebuking them for not having any faith. I loved him and his attitude against sin and sickness. In fact, the stories had not been enough to really tell me what the man was like, nor can any book written about him do Smith Wigglesworth justice.

THE STORY BEHIND "I AM THINE, O LORD, I HAVE HEARD THY VOICE"

“I Am Thine, O Lord” is one of the most beloved hymns of personal devotion in Christian worship. The hymn was written in 1875 by Fanny J. Crosby, one of the most prolific hymn writers in history, who authored more than 8,000 hymns despite being blind from infancy.

The hymn was inspired during a visit Crosby made to the home of Dr. William Howard Doane, a close friend, gospel song composer, and choir director. One evening after supper, Crosby spoke warmly about the deep joy and peace she experienced in drawing nearer to God through prayer and devotion. Her words were so moving that Doane immediately sat down at the piano and began to compose a melody that reflected the spirit of her testimony.

As the music flowed, Crosby wrote the words that would become the hymn “I Am Thine, O Lord.” The hymn expresses a believer’s longing for closer fellowship with God, emphasizing spiritual surrender, consecration, and the desire to draw nearer to Christ.

    The opening line,

“I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me,”

reflects the assurance of God’s love and the believer’s response of dedication. The hymn’s famous refrain,

“Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died,”

beautifully captures the central Christian desire for deeper communion with Christ.

The hymn was later included in the gospel song collection “Songs of Devotion” (1875) and quickly became widely used in revivals, prayer meetings, and church services. Its simple yet powerful message has made it a favorite across denominations for more than a century.

Today, “I Am Thine, O Lord” remains a cherished hymn that calls believers to greater intimacy with God, deeper faith, and a life fully surrendered to Christ.

It continues to inspire Christians around the world to seek a closer walk with the Lord.

THE STORY BEHIND "TO GOD BE THE GLORY"

To God Be the Glory was written by Fanny J. Crosby (1820–1915), one of the most prolific hymn writers in Christian history. Although she lost her sight as an infant, Crosby devoted her life to writing hymns that celebrated God's grace, redemption, and faithfulness. She penned more than 8,000 hymns, many of which remain beloved today.

The hymn's lyrics were inspired by the central message of the Gospel, that salvation comes solely through the redeeming work of Jesus Christ. Every verse points believers away from human achievement and toward God's saving grace, culminating in the joyful refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!

The stirring melody was composed by William Howard Doane (1832–1915), a businessman, composer, and longtime collaborator of Crosby. Together, they created many enduring hymns that continue to inspire Christians around the world.

Interestingly, To God Be the Glory was not initially popular in the United States. It gained widespread recognition after being embraced by Christians in Britain, particularly during the evangelistic campaigns of Billy Graham in the 1950s. The hymn became a signature song at his crusades, where thousands sang it as a powerful declaration of gratitude for God's gift of salvation.

Today, To God Be the Glory is sung across denominations and cultures. Its timeless message reminds believers that all honour, praise, and glory belong to God alone because of the "great things He has done."

  • JAMES 1
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted of God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man.
14 But every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed.
15 Then, when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

    DOWNHILL IN THE USA
I was involved in website ministry and, through a mutual friend, I was introduced to a so-called lady pastor.

This should have been a red flag, but I was entranced by this woman. She had me listening to preachers like Rodney Howard-Browne and Joyce Meyer, and I was being led astray.

This was in 2004, and my mum was getting worse as she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

Now, let me be honest: I blame no one but myself. I thought of nothing but myself, and I was led away by my own greed and selfishness.

So, in late 2004, I left my mum and travelled to America, where I foolishly married this woman. To this day, she was not a true pastor. She followed prosperity preachers, smoked fifty cigarettes a day, slept with three dogs on her bed, and had one violent son and another whose girlfriend struggled with crack addiction.

I do not wish to dwell too much on this period of my life. Instead, let it serve as a warning to anyone who wants to depart from the true and holy will of God.

The cost to me was terrible. I never saw my mother again, I lost the respect of my family, I left my church, and I nearly lost my faith.

Thankfully, I was able to leave that situation. Many may say this was wrong, but it was an abusive and violent marriage.

I travelled across the USA to my brother’s home in Canada, where I stayed for four months before returning to the UK.

He owned many acres of land, and during my time there I was able to restore my relationship with him and his wife, and most importantly, with the Lord.

This is a time I bitterly regret, yet thankfully the Lord has completely restored me.

    Devotional Thought
Being outside of God’s will is the worst place to be. You need to be right in the centre of God’s will; anywhere else, you are at the mercy of the devil.

As you read my story, you will see a pattern: my disobedience and rebellion contrasted with God’s grace. This is something I am deeply ashamed of, but I write it as a warning.

God is very patient with all of us. We do not deserve His grace and mercy. All of us — and I most of all — have made foolish decisions that have cost us fellowship with family, friends, and most importantly, with God.

My time in America was a sobering experience. God preserved me, and I am grateful that He did and that restoration was complete.

Please, if you are reading this, do not wander from God’s ways. Doing so nearly cost me my life.

    CHAPTER 14
    SURPRISED BY HELEN
    Psalm 18:30
“As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.”

I returned to the UK in July 2007 with my tail between my legs. I managed to get a room in a house not far from Heysham Church. They had a new pastor, one who became my mentor, dear Pastor Mark.

The first Sunday I returned, I did not go into the service. I stayed outside. People looked at me, and their eyes seemed to say, “We told you so.” Indeed, some verbalised their thoughts. To be honest, I deserved it.

So there I was again, trying to find a job, but at least I was spiritually settled. After three years, I managed to get a small flat of my own in central Morecambe. It was tiny — the kitchen was probably the smallest on the planet.

It was not really suitable. My family suggested that I go on sick leave because of depression, but that was not a good option, nor one I should have taken. I wanted to work. I attended job clubs, wrote applications, and went to interviews, but refusal after refusal left me discouraged. Why?

In 2011, my spiritual life was flourishing. I enjoyed such sweet fellowship with the Lord. Hour after hour was spent in prayer and devotion, and it was a precious time. The Lord spoke very clearly.

I was also able to write, and people appreciated the devotions. During that summer, I had an internet relationship with a lady who eventually only wanted money. I was fed up.

“Lord, I want no more relationships, and certainly not an internet one.”

The Lord had been waiting for me to say this. Now, so to speak, He had carte blanche — a clean page. At last, Keith had stepped out of the way.

In early summer 2011, I decided to change an old Hotmail account to Gmail. After all, it was better, and I only had about ten people on Hotmail anyway. There was one email containing a few contacts, so I wrote to tell them I was closing the account. I also shared our church’s free website.

The next day, I noticed the website had received hits from Nanjing, China. “Wow,” I thought, “it has reached China!”

In my inbox was an email from a lady in China. She thanked me for the website and said we shared the same beliefs. “Wonderful,” I thought, “a Chinese friend.”

So we began emailing one another. I discovered she was a schoolteacher called Helen — my favourite name — and she had a teenage daughter. In one of her first emails, she said she thought I was a woman, which may explain why she contacted me in the first place!

She later went on holiday with her parents and daughter, and I did not hear from her for a while. But then she contacted me again. This time, she wanted to talk on Skype so we could see each other.

“If you don’t get Skype, I won’t talk to you again,” she said.

I had not downloaded Skype yet, but I soon did.

Anyway, we began talking online. She was kind, and we both enjoyed chatting together. Her daughter was shy in those days, and all I ever saw was a hand waving at the camera.

During the autumn, we grew closer and closer. I felt a real connection with her. We started praying together, and despite the time difference, she would call me regularly.

We also began sending letters to each other. Those letters were — and still are — very precious to us. Things were moving quickly, but could this really be the one for me? After all, Helen was in China and I was in Morecambe. I had only just managed to get a static caravan and was busy furnishing it with a sofa bed, a new boiler, a fridge, and other essentials. Surely not.

But God had His hand upon us, and in the next chapter we will see how He unfolded His plan.

    Devotional Thought
We all want to control things — especially me. I had tried for years to find a Christian wife. After all, everyone else seemed to be getting married, so why not me?

Sometimes we simply need to step out of the way. God is very patient. He waited for me to surrender, and then He gave me Helen.

I had already tried to do things my own way and had fallen flat on my face. But once I moved aside, God was able to work.

In China, many Christian parents become anxious if their children reach the age of twenty-five without being married. As many families only have one child, grandchildren are often seen as a great blessing and a sign of honour. Sadly, some people try to force matters instead of trusting God’s timing.

Christian friend, you also need to step out of the way. Only when you give God control of your situation — especially regarding marriage — can His perfect will be accomplished.

It is difficult when everyone else in your church seems to be getting married while you remain single. But God’s timing is perfect, and His choice is always best.

I am so grateful that He gave me the wonderful gift of the best wife in the world, together with a beautiful daughter and son.

JAMES 1 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted of God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man. 14 But every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. 15 Then, when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Marriage stands today at a crossroads. Once regarded as a sacred covenant and a foundational social institution, it is increasingly viewed as optional, fragile, or disposable. Churches lament declining marriage rates, governments worry about social instability, and communities struggle with the consequences of family breakdown. Yet the Christian faith insists that marriage is neither accidental nor outdated—it is divinely instituted and socially indispensable.
This article examines Christian marriage from biblical, social, and empirical perspectives, asking not only why marriages fail, but also how they may be restored for the good of families, children, and society.
    2. The Institution of Marriage: How and Why God Established It
Marriage was instituted by God at creation, not invented by culture or religion. Genesis 2:18–24 presents marriage as a divine response to human loneliness, establishing companionship, unity, and mutual responsibility. The declaration that “the two shall become one flesh” frames marriage as a covenantal union, not merely a contractual arrangement.
Jesus reaffirmed this creational foundation when responding to questions about divorce, grounding marriage firmly in God’s original intent rather than cultural concession (Matthew 19:4–6). Within Christian theology, marriage serves several purposes: companionship, procreation and nurture of children, moral regulation of sexual intimacy, and the provision of social stability. The Apostle Paul further presents marriage as a living metaphor of Christ’s faithful relationship with the Church (Ephesians 5:25–32), elevating it beyond convenience into sacred vocation.
    3. Marriage Failures: Why Are So Many Marriages Breaking Down?
    South African Divorce Trends
According to Statistics South Africa, 24,202 divorces were granted in 2024, representing an increase of nearly 9 percent from the previous year.^1 While South Africa does not calculate divorce as a proportion of all marriages in the popular “50 percent” format often cited globally, available data consistently shows that over 40 percent of divorces occur within the first ten years of marriage.^2 This indicates a pronounced vulnerability in early marriage.
Key contributors to marital failure include inadequate premarital preparation, economic stress, unemployment, unresolved trauma, infidelity, substance abuse, poor communication skills, and declining spiritual commitment. Marriage increasingly begins with emotional enthusiasm but without the skills or support required for long-term resilience.
    4. Comparative Insight: Why Are Divorce Rates Lower in Muslim Communities?
Both global and South African studies suggest that Muslim communities report lower divorce rates than the national average.^3 While this does not imply the absence of marital conflict, several stabilising practices are noteworthy: structured premarital processes, strong extended-family involvement, community accountability, and clear moral boundaries regarding sexuality.
However, comparisons must be approached cautiously. Cultural stigma, religious mediation, and differences in legal reporting may suppress formal divorce statistics. Nonetheless, the emphasis on serious preparation, communal responsibility, and marriage as a public covenant offers valuable insights for Christian communities seeking renewal.
    5. Courtship and Ignored Red Flags: A Silent Crisis Before Marriage
Relationship research consistently demonstrates that many marital breakdowns stem from problems present long before the wedding day.^4 Emotional instability, controlling behaviour, unresolved trauma, substance abuse, financial irresponsibility, and incompatible values are frequently minimised or rationalised during courtship.
Within Christian contexts, the absence of structured premarital counselling often leads couples to confuse romantic intensity with relational readiness. Studies indicate that couples who undergo meaningful premarital education experience significantly lower rates of marital distress and divorce.^5
    6. Cohabitation Before Marriage: A False Preparation?
Cohabitation is commonly presented as a practical “test run” for marriage. Yet extensive longitudinal research shows that couples who cohabit prior to clear marital commitment face higher risks of marital instability, a phenomenon known as the cohabitation effect.^6
In South Africa, cohabitation has increased significantly among young adults, often replacing formal marriage.^7 These relationships, however, tend to be less stable and offer limited legal protection, particularly for women and children, as cohabitation is not automatically recognised under South African family law.^8
    7. Father Absence, Failed Marriages, and Juvenile Delinquency
South Africa faces a profound father-absence crisis. The State of South Africa’s Fathers 2024 report indicates that approximately 64.5 percent of children do not live with their biological fathers.^9 While father absence does not deterministically lead to criminal behaviour, research among juvenile offenders consistently identifies absent or disengaged fathers as a significant risk factor.^10
Stable marriages are not the sole solution, but they remain one of the most reliable environments for sustained paternal involvement, supervision, and moral formation.
    8. Teenage Pregnancy: A Symptom and a Catalyst of Family Breakdown
Teenage pregnancy remains a critical social challenge. In 2024, South Africa recorded over 98,000 births to mothers aged 19 and younger, including more than 2,000 births to girls aged 10–14.^11 Research links teenage pregnancy strongly to family instability, father absence, poverty, and lack of adult supervision.^12
The long-term effects include interrupted education, intergenerational poverty, unstable future unions, and increased dependency on social support systems—further entrenching cycles of family breakdown.
    9. Steering the Ship from Sinking: What Can Be Done?
    The Church
The church must reclaim its responsibility to prepare couples for covenant, not merely weddings. This includes mandatory premarital counselling, marriage mentorship programmes, and sustained teaching on biblical marriage.
    Society
Communities must restore respect for family life, strengthen informal accountability structures, and resist cultural narratives that trivialise commitment and fidelity.
    Government
Policy interventions should prioritise family-strengthening initiatives, fatherhood programmes, youth protection, and early intervention strategies that support vulnerable households.
    10. Conclusion: Recovering the Sacred Vision of Marriage
Christian marriage is not obsolete; it is under-prepared, under-supported, and under-discipled. The crisis of marriage is ultimately a crisis of commitment, formation, and communal responsibility. Through intentional renewal by the church, society, and government, marriage can once again serve as a stabilising force for families, children, and the nation.

  • THE STORY BEHIND THE HYMNS.
