    “WHO GOD IS TO ME”
    MY REFUGE
    Psalm 46:1 (LLV) —
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
    When trouble comes,
    our first instinct
    is often
    to look
    for somewhere
    to escape.
    Somewhere safe.
    Somewhere
    the storm
    cannot reach us.
    The psalmist
    points us
    toward such
    a place.
    “God is
    our refuge.”
    A refuge
    is more
    than shelter.
    It is
    a place
    we can enter
    when what surrounds us
    feels stronger
    than we are.
    But notice:
    The psalmist
    does not promise
    that those
    who trust God
    will never
    experience trouble.
    Quite the opposite.
    He assumes
    trouble
    will come.
    The promise
    is that trouble
    will never come
    without God
    being there.
    He is
    “a very present
    help.”
    Not distant.
    Not unaware.
    Not arriving
    after everything
    has settled down.
    Present.
    Right here.
    Right now.
    Sometimes
    God changes
    the circumstances
    around us.
    Sometimes
    He gives us
    strength
    to walk
    through circumstances
    that do not change.
    Either way,
    we are not
    alone.
    That is why
    the verse joins
    two words:
    “refuge”
    and
    “strength.”
    God is
    the shelter
    we run to.
    And God is
    the strength
    we receive
    when we must
    step outside
    the shelter
    and continue.
    Later
    in this psalm,
    the earth moves.
    Mountains shake.
    Waters roar.
    Nations rage.
    The world
    seems to be
    coming apart.
    Yet above
    all that noise
    comes the quiet
    command:
    “Be still,
    and know
    that I am God.”
    Our refuge
    is not found
    in a life
    where nothing
    ever goes wrong.
    Our refuge
    is found
    in knowing
    that nothing
    can happen
    outside
    the presence
    of God.
A new beginning finds shelter here:
When trouble surrounds me, I do not have to search for God. He is already present in the middle of it with me.
Reflection: When trouble comes, is my first response to focus on everything going wrong, or to remember the God who is already present with me?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge and my strength. When trouble comes and circumstances feel larger than I can handle, remind me that I do not face them alone. Help me run to You rather than to fear. Give me shelter when I need to rest and strength when I need to continue. Above all, help me recognize that You are already here—my very present help. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  • Good evening, brethren.
    1. Evening devotion for today.

    ED.i. *DAILY WALK WITH CHRIST*
    (COCIN DEVOTIONAL)

    *DATE:*
    THURSDAY 20TH AUGUST, 2026

    *SUB-THEME:*
    YOUTHS: VESSELS OF GOD’S GRACE.

    *TOPIC:*
    YOUTHS AS BEARERS OF LIGHT

    *TEXT:*
    EPHESIANS 5:8-13
    8. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
    9. for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth
    10. and find out what pleases the Lord.
    11. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
    12. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
    13. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

    *TOPIC:*
    YOUTHS AS BEARERS OF LIGHT

    *THE MESSAGE:*
Jesus made it clear that He is the light of the world, and whoever following Him will never walk in darkness but have the light of life (Jn. 8:12). Darkness is often synonymous with sin and wickedness. In this text, Paul makes it clear that believers were once in darkness but are now in the light of the Lord. He urges them to live as children of the light and have nothing to do with darkness. Instead, expose it through righteous and truthful deeds that pleases the Lord. Christians are living amidst ungodly people whose behaviours and priorities conflict with the word of God. Will you compromise to belong or stand out as light? As a youth, your life must radiate the light of Christ wherever you are - in school, at work, in business, and in search of a job or a life partner. Is your light shinning? If not, fan it into flame.

    *REFLECTION:*
    Let your light so shine.

    *PRAYER:*
Father, help me not to hide my light in Jesus' name. Amen.

    *MEMORY VERSE FOR THE MONTH:*
    2 TIMOTHY 2:21.
"If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be instruments for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master, and prepared to do any good work."

    *TODAY'S BIBLE READING PLAN:*
    EZEKIEL 16-19.

    ED.i. TO SAFE HARBOR

"Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved. So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it drift away." - Acts 27:31-32

Paul said this when they were in a big storm on a ship at sea. This shipwreck story is often preached; however, we do not often hear about the lifeboat which belonged to the ship. The workers on the ship wanted to use this boat to secretly get away. They knew that if the ship was tossed against the rocks, they would all perish. Moreover, there were 276 people on board. How do you get them all in one lifeboat? They were cowards and wanted to leave the ship to save their own skin. Paul warned the captain and said: 'If they do not stay on board, you will not be saved.'

    Jesus Christ, the only Lifeboat

The lifeboat would not offer any chance to survive on the stormy sea where they had been floating for two weeks. Paul knew this. I do not know much about ships, but one thing is certain: when there is a chance for shipwreck, the first question is: 'where is the lifeboat?'

I have an important question: do we all understand the meaning and importance of a lifeboat when it comes to the salvation of our souls? When your soul is in great need, do you have a lifeboat? Today I want to ask you to investigate the lifeboat before your soul venture on board. For many people their lifeboat is their 'good works.' However, you will not get to heaven with these. There are many leaky lifeboats and people think these will save their souls.

I would like to convince people through the Holy Spirit to step into the only safe lifeboat which will bring you to heaven. That lifeboat cannot be smashed. The wood comes from the cross on Calvary. Throughout the ages, this Lifeboat brings shipwrecks into safe harbor day and night. This Lifeboat never fails and is big enough for everyone. The only lifeboat that can save your soul is Jesus Christ.

    2. Good evening prayer for today.

    EP.i. Evening Prayer

Come unto me, all [ye] that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ⏤ Matthew 11:28

Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work. ⏤ Oswald Chambers

O God, You have taught us in Your holy word to cast our burdens upon You, promising that You will sustain us. We come to You this evening with our burdens. You’ve given them to us as gifts, so we know there must be a blessing hidden within each one. Help us to accept our burdens and receive the gifts they carry. Let us not complain or grumble under them, lest we miss the blessings You’ve prepared for us.

You haven’t promised to take our burdens away, for that would rob us of the blessings You’ve lovingly prepared. But You have promised to sustain us and give us the strength to bear them. So our prayer is that You would give us the grace to accept whatever burdens You’ve placed upon us, to carry whatever crosses You’ve given us, and to bear them after our Savior, trusting in quiet faith.

At the close of this day, we bring You our sincere gratitude and praise for Your goodness.

    Your love never tires,
    Your patience never runs out,
    Your grace never fails.

We grieve You with our many sins, our unbelief, and our complaining. Have mercy on us and forgive us for Jesus’ sake.

Grant us an evening blessing from Your hand. Give us Your peace, strengthen us with Your might, and prepare us for any duty or struggle that lies ahead. Crush Satan under our feet. Jesus, You have overcome the world, and in Your victory, You are our defense and refuge. So we hide in You, as in the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Bless us for Your name’s sake. Amen.

  • The Story Behind the Hymns
THE STORY BEHIND "ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE "

“Eternal Father, Strong to Save” is one of the world’s best-known hymns associated with the sea, sailors and those who face danger on the waters. Its powerful words are a prayer for God’s protection and a reminder of His authority over the forces of nature.

The hymn was written in 1860 by English hymn writer William Whiting (1825–1878), who was then the headmaster of Winchester College Choristers’ School in England.

Whiting was inspired to write the hymn after a student preparing to travel by sea came to him troubled by the dangers of the journey. Whiting drew inspiration particularly from Psalm 107, which speaks of sailors caught in storms and waves and of God calming the sea.

The opening words, “Eternal Father, strong to save,” immediately establish the hymn’s central theme: God as the protector of those at sea. Whiting’s original poem included references to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, asking each person of the Trinity for protection.

The hymn became even more widely known after English composer John Bacchus Dykes created the tune “Melita” for it in 1861. The name refers to Melita, the ancient name associated with Malta, where the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked according to Acts 28.

With its memorable melody and prayerful words, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” soon became closely connected with naval and maritime traditions. It has been sung by sailors, naval personnel and families seeking protection for loved ones travelling across the sea.

Over the years, the hymn has also been used at naval ceremonies, military services, funerals and moments of remembrance. Its appeal, however, reaches far beyond the sea. The hymn speaks to anyone who needs courage and assurance in the face of uncertainty, placing human vulnerability against the enduring strength of God.

More than 160 years after it was written, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” remains a beloved hymn because its message is timeless: when the waters are troubled and human strength reaches its limits, faith looks to the One who commands the sea and offers refuge to those who call upon Him.

TITLE: "THE LORD FIGHTS FOR YOU"

    ANCHOR SCRIPTURE(S)

Deuteronomy 20:4 (KJV) "For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you."

Exodus 14:14 (KJV) "The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace."

    QUOTE TO REFLECT ON

"When God goes before you, no battle is greater than His power."

    DAY'S REFLECTION

Life sometimes brings battles we cannot avoid—opposition, difficult circumstances, uncertainty, disappointment, and situations that seem beyond our control. In such moments, God's Word gives us a powerful assurance: we are not fighting alone.

Deuteronomy 20:4 declares that "the LORD your God is he that goeth with you." The word "goeth" reminds us that God does not send His people into battle and abandon them. He goes with them. His presence gives us courage when circumstances create fear.

The Scripture also says that God goes with us "to fight for you against your enemies, to save you." This does not mean that believers will never face opposition. Rather, it assures us that our ultimate confidence is in God's power, justice, and ability to deliver. Some battles require our action and obedience; others require us to stand still and allow God to intervene.

This is exactly what Moses told Israel at the Red Sea in Exodus 14:14: "The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace." Israel was trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army. Humanly speaking, there seemed to be no escape. Yet God was about to demonstrate that an impossible situation was not beyond His ability.

"Hold your peace" means to remain calm and trust God rather than allowing fear and panic to control you. There are times when our greatest act of faith is to stop worrying, pray, obey God's instructions, and wait for Him to act.

In everyday life, we may encounter situations where we have done everything within our ability and still see no solution. Such moments remind us that God's power is greater than human limitations. We should not respond with panic, bitterness, or despair. Instead, we should place the matter before God and trust Him for direction and deliverance.

Today, remember that the battle belongs to the Lord. Do what He requires of you, but do not carry what only He can carry. God goes before you, God stands with you, and God is able to fight for you.

    MEDITATION SCRIPTURE(S)

2 Chronicles 20:15 (KJV) "And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's."

Psalm 46:1 (KJV) "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

    LIFE LESSONS (IMPLICATIONS)

    1. God's presence gives us courage in the midst of battles.

    2. We do not have to face every challenge in our own strength.

    3. Faith requires remaining calm when circumstances encourage panic.

    4. Obedience is our responsibility; the ultimate outcome belongs to God.

    5. God is able to bring deliverance even when there seems to be no way out.

    EVERYDAY ACTION

Pray about your battles, obey God's direction, and refuse to let fear control your response.

    PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for going with me and fighting for me. Give me peace in every battle, wisdom to obey You, and faith to trust Your power for my deliverance. In Jesus' name, Amen.

    DECLARATION

The Lord is with me and fights for me. I will not fear or be discouraged. I will remain calm, trust God's power, and walk confidently in His victory. The battle belongs to the Lord! Amen.

    TOPIC: GOD'S COVENANT OF PROTECTION

    MEMORIZE:
"For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her." Zechariah 2:5 (KJV)

    BIBLE READING: PSALM 91:1-16
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

    5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

    9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

    MESSAGE:
The devil lures many people into evil covenants with the promise of protection; however, complete protection only exists in God. Romans 8:31 says, "... If God be for us, who can be against us?" Romans 8:37 further says that we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us. This means that, if you are in a covenant with God, you will not have to fight any battle, because He will always fight for you. Many times, you would have won the battle before you even realise that someone was trying to attack you.

I ran away from my village after some people threatened that they were going to 'eat me for breakfast,' and for 13 years, I could not return. However, after I met the Lord Jesus Christ, I was able to visit my village, and I even attended a wedding where I saw many of the people who had threatened to kill me through diabolical means. I was much younger in the faith at the time, so I had a lot of zeal but not much wisdom. I was asked to preach at the wedding, and I delivered a powerful sermon that hit them hard with the word of God. Some months later, those people went to the mother of the lady who got married and told her that it was her daughter's wedding that provided a platform for me to insult them. They further said that they had been waiting for an opportunity for revenge, and the opportunity had presented itself now that her daughter was pregnant. They told her, "We will see if your daughter will give birth, unless we are not the ones in charge here on earth." The lady's mother became frightened and came to me. I told her not to worry and assured her that on the day her daughter would give birth, all those who had threatened her would fall asleep. To the glory of God, things turned out exactly as I said; her daughter gave birth while those who threatened her were sleeping. The baby they swore would not be born is now a medical doctor.

Beloved, God said that He will be a wall of fire around you in today's memory verse, and anyone who chooses to confront the Consuming Fire will not live to tell the story. Never be afraid of any force, person, or situation that threatens to harm you. Cry out to God in such cases, and He will show up to defend you and give you victory.

    KEY POINT:
God is a wall of fire around those who are in a covenant with Him.

    “WHO GOD IS TO ME”
    MY ROCK
    Psalm 18:2 (LLV) —
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I take refuge; my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold.”
    Life
    does not always
    give us
    steady ground.
    Circumstances
    change.
    Plans
    collapse.
    People
    disappoint us.
    Things
    we thought
    were certain
    suddenly
    are not.
    David knew
    that kind
    of life.
    He had known
    victory
    and danger.
    Friendship
    and betrayal.
    Celebration
    and fear.
    There were times
    when he literally
    hid among
    the rocks
    to escape
    those who wanted
    to destroy him.
    Perhaps that
    is why
    his words
    carry
    such confidence.
    “The LORD
    is my rock.”
    Not:
    The LORD
    might become
    my rock
    if trouble comes.
    Not:
    The LORD
    was my rock
    when things
    were difficult.
    The LORD
    is
    my rock.
    Right now.
    David's security
    was not found
    in the stability
    of his circumstances.
    It was found
    in the unchanging
    character
    of his God.
    Then David
    keeps going.
    “My fortress.”
    When danger
    surrounds me,
    God is
    my security.
    “My deliverer.”
    When there seems
    to be
    no way out,
    God is
    my rescuer.
    “My shield.”
    When the battle
    comes close,
    God stands
    between me
    and what
    would destroy me.
    “My stronghold.”
    When everything
    around me
    feels uncertain,
    there remains
    somewhere
    I can stand.
    Notice something
    beautiful
    in David's words.
    Again
    and again
    he says:
    “My.”
    My rock.
    My fortress.
    My deliverer.
    My God.
    My strength.
    My shield.
    My salvation.
    My stronghold.
    David was not
    describing
    a God
    he had merely
    heard about.
    He was describing
    the God
    he had learned
    to trust.
    There is
    a difference
    between knowing
    that God
    is a rock
    and being able
    to say,
    “He is
    my rock.”
    That kind
    of confidence
    is formed
    through walking
    with Him.
    Through storms.
    Through uncertainty.
    Through prayers
    answered
    in unexpected ways.
    Through discovering,
    again
    and again,
    that when everything
    else moves,
    God does not.
    The storm
    may still come.
    The ground
    around us
    may still shake.
    But our confidence
    does not rest
    upon the absence
    of trouble.
    It rests
    upon the presence
    of Someone
    who cannot
    be moved.
A new beginning finds somewhere solid to stand:
when everything around me changes, the Lord remains my rock.
Reflection: What feels uncertain in my life today, and am I trying to find security in changing circumstances or in the unchanging character of God?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for being my rock when everything around me feels uncertain. You are my fortress, my deliverer, my strength, and my refuge. Teach me not merely to know these things about You, but to trust them personally. When circumstances shift beneath my feet, remind me that You have not moved. Help me stand securely in You today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

There is a difference between knowing that God is a rock and being able to say, “He is my rock.” That kind of confidence is formed through walking with Him. Through storms. Through uncertainty. Through prayers answered in unexpected ways. Through discovering, again and again, that when everything else moves, God does not. The storm may still come. The ground around us may still shake. But our confidence does not rest upon the absence of trouble. It rests upon the presence of Someone who cannot be moved. A new beginning finds somewhere solid to stand: when everything around me changes, the Lord remains my rock.

  • MONDAY MORNING PRAYER
    “BUT IF NOT!”
A Faith That Trusts God Regardless of the Outcome!

    Scripture: Daniel 3:17–18 (KJV)
“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods...”

Heavenly Father, we come before You this Monday morning with hearts still overflowing from the awesome service we experienced yesterday. Thank You for Your presence, Your Word, Your power, and the reminder that You are still God—even when life doesn't turn out the way we expected.
Lord, as we begin this new week, give us the faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They stood before a fiery furnace knowing You were able to deliver them, but their faith wasn't dependent upon whether You did.
Their declaration was simple but powerful:
“Our God is able... BUT IF NOT, we still won't bow!”
Father, give us that kind of faith!
When the prayer hasn't been answered yet—we will still worship You.
When the healing hasn't manifested yet—we will still trust You.
When the financial breakthrough hasn't come yet—we will still praise You.
When the family situation hasn't changed—we will still believe You.
When the door doesn't open—we will still serve You.
When we don't understand what You're doing—we will still declare that You are good!
Lord, teach us that real faith doesn't say, “I'll trust You if You do what I want.” Real faith says, “God, I know You are able, but even if You choose another way, I will not bow, I will not quit, and I will not turn away from You!”
Father, some of us may walk into a furnace this week—a difficult conversation, an unexpected problem, pressure on the job, financial concerns, family struggles, disappointment, or circumstances beyond our control.
But remind us that the furnace does not mean You have abandoned us!
Daniel 3:25 declares, “Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire... and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
God, meet us in the fire!
If You don't keep us from it, walk through it with us.
If You don't immediately remove it, give us strength to endure it.
If You don't change the situation today, change us while we're standing in it.
And when we come out, let us come out like those three Hebrew men—not destroyed, not defeated, and not smelling like what we've been through!
Your Word says in Daniel 3:27 that “the smell of fire had not passed on them.”
So Father, don't let yesterday's fire contaminate today's attitude. Don't let past disappointments determine this week's expectations. Don't allow bitterness, fear, frustration, or discouragement to follow us into this new day.
    We declare:
THE FIRE WILL NOT HAVE THE FINAL WORD!
We may be tested, but we will not bow.
We may be pressured, but we will not compromise.
We may be surrounded by flames, but we are not alone.
We may not understand God's plan, but we trust God's heart.
Father, cover our families today. Cover our homes, marriages, children, grandchildren, loved ones, churches, pastors, leaders, workplaces, businesses, finances, and every concern we're carrying.
Go before us on the highways and byways. Protect us from dangers seen and unseen. Give us wisdom in every decision, grace in every conversation, patience in every challenge, and strength for every assignment.
And Lord, when the enemy whispers, “What if God doesn't do it?”
Give us enough faith to answer:
“BUT IF NOT—I STILL TRUST HIM!”
Because our faith isn't merely in what God can give us—our faith is in who God is!
You are still Jehovah Jireh—our Provider.
You are still Jehovah Rapha—our Healer.
You are still Jehovah Shalom—our Peace.
You are still our Deliverer, our Keeper, our Refuge, and our Strength!
So we enter this Monday declaring:
    OUR GOD IS ABLE!
But even if He doesn't do it the way we expected...
    WE WILL STILL WORSHIP!
    WE WILL STILL SERVE!
    WE WILL STILL PRAISE!
    WE WILL STILL BELIEVE!
    WE WILL STILL STAND!
Because whether God delivers us from the fire or meets us in the fire, we know one thing for certain:
WE WILL NEVER WALK THROUGH THE FIRE ALONE!
Father, let the Word we received yesterday live in us throughout this entire week.
    “BUT IF NOT!”
Our circumstances will not determine our worship.
Our disappointments will not destroy our faith.
Our trials will not make us bow.
GOD IS ABLE—AND GOD IS STILL GOD!
In the mighty, matchless, and victorious name of Jesus Christ, we pray.
    AMEN!
