Devotion: 1 Corinthians 1:28
“He chose what the world looks down on and despises, and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important.” GNB
Have you ever felt that, as a Christian, you have been ridiculed? Have people, chatting a mile a minute, suddenly fell silent when you entered? People have a need to feel that they are better than others, so ridiculing a believer, taunting you, bringing you down and shutting you out from the crowd is their way to make themselves feel they have the upper hand. Don’t let that get to you! You are A CHILD OF GOD! To Him you are perfect in every way.
Romans 8:16: “God’s Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God’s children.” GNB
Galatians 3:26: “It is through faith that all of you are God’s children in union with Christ Jesus.” GNB
However poor, meek or mild-mannered you may be; however you may look, whatever your profession, God has CHOSEN YOU! He has filled you with His Holy Spirit and opened your eyes to the wisdom of God. You are on a holy quest to speak the truth about the gospel and to spread His Word far and wide. Those who dislike you and look down on you, because you do not measure up to their worldly standards, will remain blind to this amazing truth, unless they allow God to open their hearts to receive the message.
1 Corinthians 1:21: “For God in his wisdom made it impossible for people to know him by their own wisdom. Instead, by means of the so-called ‘foolish’ message we preach, God decided to save those who believe.”GNB
Remember how Jesus preferred to associate with social outcasts? The prostitute, the money-changer, the sick and the lonely, the desperate and anxious. In other words, those whom the world deem ‘different’ and ‘unfit’ to even speak to. God can use the smallest child or a dying old man to spread the message of the cross, so one should avoid thinking that they know nothing. God, through His Holy Spirit in those messengers, knows the secret wisdom which is the freedom and forgiveness we receive through Jesus Christ and the ability to have knowledge of the true value of things.
1 Corinthians 2:15: “Whoever has the Spirit, however, is able to judge the value of everything, but no one is able to judge him.” GNB
Isn’t it true that those who tease and ridicule you cannot really put into words exactly WHAT you did wrong? They have no case. They don’t know you. They valued you superficially, like people of the world do. You are despised on sight because of what you represent. And, friends, I’d rather be called out and shamed for being a child of God than joining those who point fingers. The world and its people have no power over you, for you work with the almighty power of the Spirit in you. Nothing can touch you.
Galatians 2:19-20: “…I have been put to death with Christ on his cross, so that it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. This life that I live now, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me.” GNB
Dear friends, let your hearts not be troubled or your spirit broken by searing remarks and false gossip, but continue to remain in the Spirit. And if you fear you will not have the words to share the gospel, you can rest assured that, at the right time, God will create the opportunity and give you the insight in your target audience so that you can speak with conviction and reach into their dark souls, to pour God’s soothing oil of blessing on their broken lives.
1 Corinthians 2:13: “…we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, …” GNB
Luke 12:11-12: “When they bring you to be tried in the synagogues or before governors or rulers, do not be worried about how you will defend yourself or what you will say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” GNB
Ask yourself: Do I still allow the world to hurt me with their mean words, pointing fingers and poisonous whispers? Or do I understand that I am chosen, a child of the living God, one that has a responsibility, as per His calling, to speak up about Him and to live my life in Christ without shame and embarrassment?
