"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3) God has always judged idolatry. Israel worshiped the golden calf (Exodus 32:1–35). About 3,000 people died, and the Lord sent a plague upon the people. King Solomon turned to other gods (1 Kings 11:1–13). God declared that the kingdom would be torn from his son. Nebuchadnezzar exalted himself and set up a golden image for worship (Daniel 3). God humbled his kingdom, and later, because of his pride, he lived like a beast until he acknowledged the Most High (Daniel 4:28–37). Lesson: God alone deserves worship. 2. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image." (Exodus 20:4–6) God condemns image worship. The golden calf brought immediate judgment (Exodus 32). Jeroboam's golden calves led Israel into sin, bringing God's judgment upon his house (1 Kings 12:26–33; 1 Kings 13:33–34; 1 Kings 14:7–16). Lesson: Worship belongs to the Creator, not created things. 3. "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain." (Exodus 20:7) God holds His name sacred. A man blasphemed God's name and was put to death by God's command (Leviticus 24:10–16, 23). Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli, treated God's worship with contempt and dishonored His name through their wickedness. God judged them, and both died on the same day (1 Samuel 2:12–17, 22–25, 34; 1 Samuel 4:11). Lesson: God's name must never be treated lightly. 4. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." (Exodus 20:8–11) God blesses obedience and judges deliberate rebellion. A man gathering sticks on the Sabbath was judged according to God's command and stoned (Numbers 15:32–36). God warned Israel that Sabbath-breaking would bring national judgment (Jeremiah 17:21–27). The Babylonian captivity came in part because Israel neglected God's Sabbaths (2 Chronicles 36:20–21). Though forgiven, he suffered severe consequences in his household (2 Samuel 11–12). Lesson: Human life is sacred because it bears God's image. 7. "Thou shalt not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14) God judges sexual immorality. David committed adultery with Bathsheba, and the child died. The sword never departed from David's house (2 Samuel 11–12). Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38). Judah acknowledged, "She hath been more righteous than I." His sin was exposed publicly. Scripture records the shame of his actions, though it does not say he was judged for "ten generations." Lesson: Sin may be forgiven, but it often carries painful consequences. 8. "Thou shalt not steal." (Exodus 20:15) God judges theft. Achan stole what God had devoted to destruction. Israel was defeated at Ai, and Achan and his household were judged (Joshua 7:1–26). Gehazi deceitfully took gifts from Naaman and was struck with leprosy (2 Kings 5:20–27). Lesson: Nothing can be hidden from God. 9. "Thou shalt not bear false witness." (Exodus 20:16) God judges lying. Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit and died immediately (Acts 5:1–11). Jezebel arranged false witnesses against Naboth, bringing God's judgment upon her and Ahab's house (1 Kings 21). Lesson: God is a God of truth. 10. "Thou shalt not covet." He often spent time in prayer before beginning his research, believing that wisdom came from God. One of the lessons farmers understand is that a branch separated from the vine cannot bear fruit, regardless of how healthy it once appeared. Its life depends entirely upon its connection to the vine. The branch does not struggle to produce fruit; it simply remains connected, and the life of the vine flows through it. The branch has no independent life. Its strength, nourishment and fruitfulness all come from the vine. Likewise, believers flourish only as they remain connected to Jesus through faith, obedience, prayer and His Word. This passage challenges us to examine our lives: Are we merely attached to Christ outwardly or are we truly abiding in Him? Are we busy with religious activity while neglecting personal fellowship with the Saviour? Is the fruit of the Spirit becoming increasingly evident in our character and conduct? God is more concerned with fruitfulness than mere busyness. A fruitful life glorifies Him, blesses others and bears lasting eternal value. When difficulties come, remember that the Father's pruning is not punishment, but preparation. He lovingly removes what hinders growth so that we may bear more fruit. May we daily abide in Christ, depend upon His strength and allow His life to be seen through ours. *1. The Source of Fruitfulness* a. Jesus identifies Himself as the True Vine and His Father as the Vinedresser. Jesus alone is the true source of spiritual life and lasting fruit. The Father lovingly removes unfruitful branches and prunes fruitful ones to increase their productivity. b. God's purpose is not merely that believers exist, but that they bear much fruit for His glory. God desires every believer to grow spiritually. His discipline and pruning are expressions of His love, preparing us for greater usefulness. *Questions* Am I allowing God to remove attitudes, habits or priorities that hinder my spiritual growth? Is my life producing spiritual fruit that brings glory to God? *2. The Secret of Fellowship* a. Jesus calls His disciples to remain in Him continually. The disciples had been made clean through Christ's teaching. Abiding is a daily, deliberate choice to remain in close fellowship with Christ. *Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving* (Colossians 4:2). b. Spiritual life flourishes through constant dependence upon Jesus. A fruitful Christian life is maintained by regular prayer, Bible study, worship and obedience. *Questions* What practical habits help me remain closely connected with Christ each day. Am I spending time with Christ consistently or only when difficulties arise?* *3. The Strength of Dependence* a.Jesus declares that apart from Him, believers can do nothing of eternal value. Every ability for effective Christian living comes from Christ. Apostle Paul declared: *“I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)* Fruitfulness begins when believers surrender completely to Christ's leadership. b. Those who abide in Christ bear much fruit because His life flows through them. Why? Because if they talk to you about somebody else, they’ll talk to somebody else about you. The Bible warns us about three things: 1) a hasty tongue. ‘Do you see a man hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him’ (Proverbs 29:20 NKJV). If you take time to get the facts, much of the time you’ll speak differently. Hannah prayed so passionately for a child that Eli the high priest thought she was drunk. When the disciples saw Jesus walking toward them on the Sea of Galilee, they thought He was a ghost. So think, or better yet, pray before you jump to conclusions. 2) a flattering tongue. ‘…There is no faithfulness in their mouth…they flatter with their tongue’ (Psalms 5:9 NKJV). Say what you mean and mean what you say. Be genuine. When you flatter people, you manipulate them for your own ends. Don’t do that. Give it to them straight. If you love them, be truthful with them. 3) a judgmental tongue. Jesus said, ‘Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you’ (Matthew 7:1-2 NKJV). If you live long enough, you’ll be guilty of many of the same things you’re so quick to condemn in others. The truth is, how you deal with other people determines how God deals with you. An unconverted person will see obedience as a burden and when he may be willing he may not have the power to obey. When someone is genuinely converted, all forms of resistance and reluctance in obeying God are given a deadly blow. The more consecrated he is, the more tender his heart is and the more surrendered to the will, word, way and wisdom of God. Obedience is the practical proof of love for God. As the hour of His suffering drew near, Jesus did not avoid the Father’s will; He moved steadily toward the cross even when it was not convenient. In this passage we see obedience displayed first by the Saviour, then by His servants and finally by those who would become obedient saints. True discipleship is not selective obedience, but complete surrender, even when the path leads to sacrifice. *1. The Obedient Saviour* *"Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.”* The law of the passover had been in existence for thousands of years since the children of Israel were delivered from Egypt. It is easy to see the ceremonial law as outdated and Jesus could easily have waived it off as inconsequential. Rather, Jesus took it seriously as something that must be obeyed since it had not been abrogated by God. There is also the psychological trauma that He could have used as an excuse for not obeying this law of passover. He knew that the Passover pointed to His own death as the Lamb of God and the thought of it could be very distressing. Yet, He was obedient unto death; He did not resist the divine timetable. His obedience was deliberate, timely and total. b. Obedience to the Word of God should be total and there should not be any excuse when the Word of God is clear. He teaches us that obedience is not merely doing what is easy; it is submitting to God’s will even when it involves suffering. There is no record of spots in the character of Jesus though He passed through most emotionally tasking situations and circumstances. We are to follow His example and this will take determination, consecration and prayer for grace. *Question* Am I willing to obey God when obedience demands sacrifice, inconvenience or personal loss? *2. The Obedient Servants* a. Jesus sent Peter and John with specific instructions concerning the Passover preparation. *"Go and prepare us the passover that we may eat"*. They were told what to do, where to go and whom to follow. That kind of commandment was strange. The disciples were always with Jesus and they never saw or heard Him telling someone about using his house for passover. It was natural for people like Peter not to "play the fool" but rather ask questions from Christ so as to be more certain. Surprisingly, they did not ask Jesus for clarifications, argue, delay or substitute their own ideas; they simply obeyed. Actually, the instructions were detailed enough that without any question they could easily follow the instructions of Jesus. But it would require faith in the Omniscience and Omnipresence of Jesus to obey. b. Pride and unbelief are two major drivers of disobedience. He who will follow Jesus must have faith in Christ as the faithful Lord of heaven and earth. He is Omnipotent and Omniscient. There must be humility too. It is the humility of Christ that made Him submit to God's Word and paid the ultimate price for the salvation of mankind. Obedient servants trust the wisdom of their Master even when they do not fully understand His instructions. God often guides step by step and blessing follows those who respond promptly. *Question* Do I obey God promptly or do I delay until His command agrees with my own plans? *3. The Obedient Saint* There was no evidence that Jesus had ever met this owner of the house on one on one. He might have been among those multitudes that have heard of Jesus and perhaps followed Jesus. He is a type of secret saint or secret disciple of Christ. The owner of the house responded positively when the disciples conveyed the Master’s request. He made available a large furnished upper room for the Lord’s use. This unnamed man became an example of a saint whose possessions, home and resources were surrendered for God’s purpose. Obedience is not limited to dramatic acts; it includes the faithful dedication of what we have to the service of Christ and willingness to give up anything the Master asks for, no matter how precious. *Question* Is my life, my home, my time and my substance fully available for the Lord’s use? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that He may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.” 4. Many parents still behave like Eli today. They see their children doing what is wrong and living a lifestyle that is not according to God's will and all they say is, it is their time; when they grow up they will change. The society is now structured to encourage and teach a lifestyle that displeases the Lord. We have invented what the Scripture calls abominable customs. From our homes to the church, from schools to the offices, from the market to the sporting grounds, we must take responsibility to correct every wrong doing. We should not accommodate or encourage a lifestyle that displeases God. Eli was brought to judgment because he accommodated and quietly encouraged the behaviour which was disgusting and sinful before the congregation of the children of Israel and God Himself.
