• The Story Behind the Hymns.
THE STORY BEHIND "COME CHRISTIANS JOIN TO SING"

Come, Christians, Join to Sing is one of the Church's most joyful hymns of praise, inviting believers everywhere to unite their voices in worship. Though simple in language and melody, it has become a beloved congregational hymn across many Christian traditions.

The words were written in 1843 by Christian Henry Bateman (1813–1889), an English minister in the Moravian Church. Bateman originally titled the hymn Come, Children, Join to Sing and wrote it for young worshippers, encouraging them to praise God together with glad hearts. As the hymn gained popularity, the opening line was changed to Come, Christians, Join to Sing, making it suitable for congregations of all ages.

The hymn first appeared in Bateman's collection Sacred Melodies for Children and quickly spread beyond Moravian circles. Its message of united praise resonated with churches across Britain and later around the world.

The familiar tune associated with the hymn was arranged and published by Henri Abraham César Malan (1787–1864), a Swiss pastor, theologian, and hymn composer. His bright, uplifting melody perfectly complements Bateman's words, making the hymn easy for congregations to sing with enthusiasm.

One of the hymn's most memorable features is the repeated cry of "Alleluia! Amen!" at the end of each stanza. "Alleluia" is a universal expression of praise to God, while "Amen" means "so be it" or "truly." Together, they reinforce the hymn's central message: believers are called to glorify God with one voice, rejoicing in His love, grace, and eternal reign.

For more than 180 years, Come, Christians, Join to Sing has been sung at worship services, choir festivals, thanksgiving celebrations, and special church occasions. Its enduring popularity reminds Christians that praise is not merely an individual act but a joyful expression of the unity of God's people.

    THEME: HE FIGHTS YOUR BATTLES

MEMORISE: The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
    Exodus 15:3

    READ: Deuteronomy 20:1-4
1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

    3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;

4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

    MESSAGE
I am always praising God, and there are several reasons I do so and will continue doing so. One of the reasons I always give praise to the Almighty is that He always fights my battles for me. He is the Mighty Man of War, as today's memory verse tells us.

While I was a lecturer at the University of llorin in Kwara State, Nigeria, I would often return home from the school campus in the afternoons to have lunch and rest for a while before returning for my evening lectures. One particular afternoon, I finished my lunch and lay on the couch in the living room to rest. At that time, I was also the pastor of a parish, and many people would often come and go from my living room. I knew that if anyone saw my eyes closed, they would think I was sleeping and wouldn't bother me, so I closed my eyes, put my hands together and put them under my head like a pillow. Suddenly, someone came into the room and grabbed my hands with one hand and my legs with the other hand while attempting to kiss me. At first, I thought it was my wife, but I realized that a person who could hold my hands and legs at the same time must be very tall, so it couldn't be her. I opened my eyes, and the being vanished. Instantly, I felt a cold sensation all over my body. I got up, got into my car, and drove to the campus for my evening lectures. Not long after, I began to vomit and pass stools at the same time. When I returned home, I had to crawl out of the car to go to the toilet, and I asked, "Daddy, what is this? I am Your son. Why is this happening to me?" God replied, "Son, I just want you to see a little bit of the battles I am fighting for you."

Many people think that they are alive because they are wise. However, if God allows them to experience a little bit of the battles He fights for them daily, they will know that they are alive only because of His grace. Beloved, you are alive today, not because you can keep yourself alive, but because God is fighting your battles for you. This is why you must thank Him always. He neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4), and that is why He can fight your battles even when you are asleep.

    PRAYER POINT
Father, I thank You for fighting my battles for me, in Jesus' name.

    AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A ADEBOYE

MEMORISE: "By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." Hebrews 13:15

    READ: Psalms 63:3-5
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

    MESSAGE:
One way the enemy cheats many believers is by making them look down on the praise and worship sessions in their churches. Such believers either do not participate in the sessions or wait until they are over before they enter their churches. They think that praising God and dancing before Him is childish, or that they are too spiritually mature to dance and praise Him. In God's sight, however, we are all children because a thousand years is as a day before Him (2 Peter 3:8). This means that in God's eyes, nobody on earth today is up to a day old.

Praise is one of the most potent weapons Christians have. Psalm 22:3 says, "But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel" This means that your praise attracts God's presence, and when God visits a place, He does not come empty-handed. He comes bearing gifts, healings, and blessings. When Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah used praise as their weapon, their enemies turned against one another and killed themselves until they were utterly destroyed (2 Chronicles 20:22-24). Some battles can only be conquered when you praise and dance recklessly before God.

"And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bands were loosed." Acts 16:25-26

In the Scripture above, Paul and Silas offered a sacrifice of praise to God in prison. God responded by causing a great earthquake that shook the foundations of the prison, opened all its doors, and loosed every prisoner's chains. No one can praise God wholeheartedly and remain bound. When you praise God with your whole heart, He will arise in His might to help you and bless you.

Beloved, you must never allow yourself to get to a point where you think you have outgrown praise. Michal thought that praising God was beneath her royal status; as a result, she remained childless throughout her life (2 Samuel 6:16-23).

Always come before your Father as a child and praise Him with all your heart. In Psalm 50:23, He said that whoever offers praise to Him glorifies Him, and when God is glorified in your life, His beauty will radiate through you and everything that concerns you. I pray that as you praise God, His glory will keep manifesting in your life, in Jesus' name.

    KEY POINT:
Never outgrow praise because it is dear to God's heart.

    THEME: ALWAYS THANK GOD

MEMORISE: It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:
    Psalm 92:1

    READ: Matthew 15:30-38
30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:

31Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?

34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.

35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

26 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.

    MESSAGE
Years ago, a very wealthy man came to see me and said that he was having trouble sleeping. He also said he was told that if I prayed for him, the problem would be solved. He added that he would give me 14 houses if l prayed for him, and the problem was solved. Of course, he didn't need to offer me his houses for me to pray for him, but his desperation to be able to sleep made him say so. Being able to sleep is one of the many divine blessings that are often taken for granted until one can no longer sleep or sees people who can't.

Beloved, you have a lot to thank God for, and living a life of thanksgiving makes you quick to recognize God's goodness in your life. Even amid challenges, when you are thankful, you will find many reasons to praise God. You will be quick to acknowledge that God is the reason things are not worse. You will also be confident that God is working things out in your favor (Romans 8:28).

When people thank God, He opens the windows of heaven to pour out His blessings upon them. In today's Bible reading, there were 4,000 hungry men, besides women and children, with Jesus and His disciples. Jesus had compassion on them and wanted to feed them; so, He asked His disciples to tell Him how much food they had. They replied that they had only seven loaves of bread and a few fishes. Despite the obvious inadequacy of the food to feed thousands of people, Jesus gave thanks, broke the bread, and handed them to His disciples to share among the multitude. His first response to the scarcity of resources was to give thanks. Jesus' heart of gratitude opened the windows of heaven for multiplication, and suddenly, the food that was too little to feed the multitude multiplied so much that everyone was filled, and they were left with seven baskets of leftovers.

Beloved, are you facing any difficult situation? Are you in dire need of resources, help, or a change in the circumstances surrounding your life? Do not despair or complain; rather, give God thanks. Despair or complaints will not multiply the little you have; however, thanksgiving will give you access to the miraculous. I pray that the Lord will open your eyes to see His grace at work in every facet of your life and help you to cultivate a heart of genuine gratitude, in Jesus' name.

    KEY POINT
Giving thanks to God releases the miraculous.

    TOPIC: REJOICE ALWAYS

    AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A ADEBOYE

MEMORISE: Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified. Psalm 70:4

    BIBLE READING: PSALM 68:3-5 (KJV)
3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

    MESSAGE:
Beloved, the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10), and this is one of the major reasons you should rejoice in Him always (Philippians 4:4). No matter your current situation, if you think deeply about all that God has done for you, you will realise that you have more than enough to be joyful about. For example, if you currently have financial challenges but realise that you are enjoying divine health, you won't be under any medical restrictions on what you can or can't eat. Many years ago, I had a friend who could only feed on milk because of a health condition. Yet, before he died, he had millions of dollars in his bank accounts.

As Christians, we have many blessings to rejoice over; however, we often take them for granted. You may not realise the value of breathing until you see someone struggling to breathe. Likewise, you may not see sleeping and waking up as a blessing until you hear stories of people who died in their sleep. You may currently be facing numerous challenges and difficulties, but there is always a reason to rejoice.

Isaiah 54:1 encourages those who are yet to bear fruit to rejoice. This is because it is with joy that a fellow can draw water out of the wells of salvation (Isaiah 12:3). When God wanted to answer Hannah's prayer, He first ensured that her countenance was no longer sad (1 Samuel 1:18). Satan's aim is to keep believers perpetually sorrowful, but when they choose to rejoice in the Lord always, they close the door to him.

In Habakkuk 3:18, the prophet said that he would rejoice in the Lord and joy in the God of his salvation. The Almighty God is the God of your salvation, meaning that you are assured of His salvation no matter what you face. This is another reason for you to rejoice in Him always. When you skip to the end of a movie and see that the main character is still alive, you will not be troubled if you go back to watch a scene where he or she is facing a near-death situation. Instead of getting worried, you will be at rest because you have seen the end of the movie.

Child of God, God has assured you in His word that your end is peace (Psalm 37:37). Never give in to fear or anxiety; rather, rejoice in the Lord always because with Christ in you, a glorious end awaits you (Colossians 1:27).

    KEY POINT:
Be intentional about rejoicing in the Lord at all times.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL DATE: SATURDAY, JUNE 6TH, 2026 TOPIC: REJOICE ALWAYS AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A ADEBOYE MEMORISE: Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified. Psalm 70:4 BIBLE READING: PSALM 68:3-5 (KJV) 3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice. 4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. 5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. MESSAGE: Beloved, the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10), and this is one of the major reasons you should rejoice in Him always (Philippians 4:4). KEY POINT: Be intentional about rejoicing in the Lord at all times. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: PSALMS 1-8 HYMN 17: PRAISE MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King! 2 Praise him for his grace and favor to his people in distress. Praise him, still the same as ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless. Alleluia, alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness! 3 Fatherlike he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows. In his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia, alleluia! Widely yet his mercy flows! 4 Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face. Sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace! • A NUGGET OF TRUTH.
IS SATAN IN CHARGE OF HELL?

“2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”

Have you heard people say there’s a keeper that torment those who are dead and put them in the hell fire? This agenda is pushed by Hollywood. Their movies depict these scenes, a underworld where people are burning and being tortured. It is also portrayed that when a person dies and was a sinner, the devil and his angels throw him into the burning flames. These are even a few description of the distorted view and misconceptions propagated by the Jesuits and Hollywood. Are these true? Is hell controlled by Satan? Is Satan subjected to hell or in charge?

The Bible Is the only armor against all the devil’s falsehoods and all the Hollywood movies portraying burning hell and the devil being its keeper are all lies. It is doctrine of devils. These are all from the father of lies. He(Satan) was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44

The truth: Satan is a creature and he’s under the power of the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, God Almighty. No one is in charge of hell as portrayed by Hollywood and popular belief. The devil himself is subjected to the lake of fire and he’s not the keeper. The lake of fire is purposely meant for the devil and his angels and not for humans but because of disobedience many shall go down with him(Matthew 25:41). And it’s his earnest effort to send many humans into the lake of fire together with him so he has perverted God’s word and all who are not firmly anchored in God’s truth will be blown away by the devil’s deceptions.

The Bible clearly shows that God will destroy Sin(Nahum 1:9). Satan is the root of sin and sinners are the branches(Malachi 4:1). There’s no burning hell now. It is when Satan and sinners surround the Holy City, New Jerusalem to invade it, That God will rain fire and brimstone to destroy them all(all will burn and turn into ashes). Satan and sinners will be destroyed and sin will never rise up again(Nahum 1:9). Don’t be deceived that Satan is the keeper of hell. He’s rather a subject of the lake of fire that’ll come. Revelation 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The day has come that shall burn as an oven. The elements melt with fervent heat, the earth also, and the works that are therein are burned up. Malachi 4:1; 2 Peter 3:10. The earth’s surface seems one molten mass—a vast, seething lake of fire. It is the time of the judgment and perdition of ungodly men—“the day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion.” Isaiah 34:8. DD 59.3

The wicked receive their recompense in the earth. Proverbs 11:31. They “shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 4:1.Some are destroyed as in a moment, while others suffer many days. All are punished “according to their deeds.” The sins of the righteous having been transferred to Satan, he is made to suffer not only for his own rebellion, but for all the sins which he has caused God’s people to commit. His punishment is to be far greater than that of those whom he has deceived. After all have perished who fell by his deceptions, he is still to live and suffer on. In the cleansing flames the wicked are at last destroyed, root and branch—Satan the root, his followers the branches. The full penalty of the law has been visited; the demands of justice have been met; and heaven and earth, beholding, declare the righteousness of Jehovah. DD 59.4

    Creation Delivered from Sin

Satan’s work of ruin is forever ended. For six thousand years he has wrought his will, filling the earth with woe and causing grief throughout the universe. The whole creation has groaned and travailed together in pain. Now God’s creatures are forever delivered from his presence and temptations. “The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they [the righteous] break forth into singing.” Isaiah 14:7. And a shout of praise and triumph ascends from the whole loyal universe. “The voice of a great multitude,” “as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings,” is heard, saying: “Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.” Revelation 19:6. DD 60.1

While the earth was wrapped in the fire of destruction, the righteous abode safely in the Holy City. Upon those that had part in the first resurrection, the second death has no power. While God is to the wicked a consuming fire, He is to His people both a sun and a shield. Revelation 20:6; Psalm 84:11. DD 60.2

“I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away.”Revelation 21:1. The fire that consumes the wicked purifies the earth. Every trace of the curse is swept away. No eternally burning hell will keep before the ransomed the fearful consequences of sin. DD 60.3 (DD: Dark Before Dawn)

  • Divine Mercy Sunday

    Feast of Divine Mercy:

    Date and Celebration:
    - The Feast of Divine Mercy is observed on the Sunday after Easter. It commemorates the revelations given by Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, regarding His Divine Mercy.

    Historical Background:
    - St. Faustina Kowalska, a member of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Krakow, Poland, recorded in her diary visions of Jesus instructing her to create an image of His Divine Mercy and to establish a feast in His honor. Jesus promised that those who venerate the image would not perish.
    - The Divine Mercy image, reflecting these visions, was first displayed during a Mass on April 28, 1935, which was the Sunday after Easter, with St. Faustina in attendance.

    Church Response and Revival:
    - For about 20 years (1958-1978), the diary of St. Faustina and the Divine Mercy image were suppressed by the Holy See. However, in 1978, Pope John Paul II revived the devotion to Divine Mercy.
    - On April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina and officially established the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday.

    Significance:
    - The feast emphasizes Jesus' mercy and His promise of forgiveness to those who repent. It is a day for Christians to reflect on God's infinite mercy and seek spiritual renewal.
