“BEHOLD THE MAN!” THE INNOCENT SAVIOUR REJECTED FOR A CRIMINAL.

    Key Text: John 19:5
“Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!”

This is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the Bible. Pilate hoped that after seeing Jesus bruised, bleeding, and humiliated, the crowd would show mercy. Instead, they hardened their hearts and demanded His death.

① PILATE TRIED TO SAVE JESUS THROUGH COMPROMISE
Pilate ordered Jesus to be scourged and mocked.
    Not because He was guilty...
But because he hoped the cruel punishment would satisfy the angry crowd.
    Pilate thought:
    The people would pity Jesus.
The priests would finally be satisfied.
An innocent Man could be released.
    But compromise never satisfies evil.

② THE ENEMIES OF CHRIST SAW PILATE'S WEAKNESS
    The religious leaders quickly realized:
    Pilate was afraid.
    He wanted to avoid conflict.
He lacked the courage to do what was right.
    Their determination only grew stronger.
Every compromise gave them greater confidence to demand Christ's death.

    ③ “BEHOLD THE MAN!”
Pilate presented Jesus before the multitude and declared:
    John 19:5
    “Behold the man!”
    Again he testified:
    John 19:4
“I find no fault in Him.”
    Standing before the crowd was:
    The Son of God.
    Wearing a crown of thorns.
His back torn by cruel scourging.
    His face covered with blood.
    Yet His expression revealed:
    Gentleness.
    Patience.
    Dignity.
Compassion for those who hated Him.
Even in suffering, Jesus displayed perfect love.

④ THE GREAT CONTRAST: JESUS OR BARABBAS
    Beside Jesus stood Barabbas.
    A hardened criminal.
    A rebel.
    A murderer.
The contrast could not have been clearer.
    Jesus—the innocent Prince of Peace.
    Barabbas—the guilty lawbreaker.
Yet the crowd chose the criminal...
...and rejected the spotless Lamb of God.

    ⑤ SOME HEARTS WERE TOUCHED
    Not everyone remained unmoved.
    Many spectators wept.
Their hearts were filled with sympathy.
Even the priests and rulers felt conviction deep within.
They knew Jesus truly was who He claimed to be.
But conviction without surrender leads to tragedy.

⑥ THE CHOICE STILL STANDS TODAY
    Every person must choose:
    Christ or the world?
    Truth or compromise?
    Obedience or rebellion?
    Eternal life or eternal loss?
    The crowd chose Barabbas.
    What will you choose?
    Joshua 24:15
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”

    LESSONS FOR US TODAY
Never reject Christ for the pleasures of this world.
Do not silence conviction when the Holy Spirit speaks.
Stand for truth even when the majority chooses otherwise.
Jesus willingly suffered so that we might receive eternal life.
    Isaiah 53:5
“But He was wounded for our transgressions... and with His stripes we are healed.”

    PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for enduring shame, suffering, and rejection to save me. Help me never to choose the world over You. Give me the courage to stand with You, even when others turn away. May my life always declare that I have chosen Christ above everything else. In Your precious name, Amen.

  • Acts 16:

"1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.
5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.
9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
    11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;
12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.
37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.
40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed."

  • PROVERB OF THE DAY

    (PROVERBS 31)

    1. The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him:

    2. What, my son?
And what, son of my womb?
And what, son of my vows?

    3. Do not give your strength to women,
Nor your ways to that which destroys kings.

    4. It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
It is not for kings to drink wine,
    Nor for princes intoxicating drink;

    5. Lest they drink and forget the law,
And pervert the justice of all the afflicted.

    6. Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to those who are bitter of heart.

    7. Let him drink and forget his poverty,
And remember his misery no more.

    8. Open your mouth for the speechless,
In the cause of all who are appointed to die.

    9. Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And plead the cause of the poor and needy.

    10. Who can find a virtuous wife?
For her worth is far above rubies.

    11. The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
So he will have no lack of gain.

    12. She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.

    13. She seeks wool and flax,
And willingly works with her hands.

    14. She is like the merchant ships,
She brings her food from afar.

    15. She also rises while it is yet night,
And provides food for her household,
And a portion for her maidservants.

    16. She considers a field and buys it;
From her profits she plants a vineyard.

    17. She girds herself with strength,
    And strengthens her arms.

    18. She perceives that her merchandise is good,
And her lamp does not go out by night.

    19. She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hand holds the spindle.

    20. She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.

    21. She is not afraid of snow for her household,
For all her household is clothed with scarlet.

    22. She makes tapestry for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

    23. Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.

    24. She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies sashes for the merchants.

    25. Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.

    26. She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.

    27. She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.

    28. Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:

    29“Many daughters have done well,
    But you excel them all.”

    30. Charm is
    deceitful and beauty is passing,
    But a woman who
fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

    31. Give her of the fruit of her hands,
And let her own works praise her in the gates.

  • The Virtuous Wife as the Church and the Husband as Christ
    Proverbs 31:10–31

    A Theological Expository Study
    Important Note: Proverbs 31:10–31

primarily describes a godly woman and godly wife.

However, throughout Scripture, marriage is also a picture of the relationship between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:22-32).

Therefore, we can make a typological and spiritual application of this passage to the Church, while preserving its original meaning.

    > "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church." (Ephesians 5:23)
    ---

    Verse 10
    > "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."

    Literal Meaning
A godly wife is rare and precious.

    Christ and the Church

Christ purchased His Church with His own blood.

    > "Ye were not redeemed with corruptible things... But with the precious blood of Christ." (1 Peter 1:18-19)

The Church is precious in His sight.
    > "Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it." (Ephesians 5:25)

The Church's value does not come from herself but from Christ's redeeming love.
    ---

    Verse 11
    > "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her."

    Spiritual Application:
Christ entrusts His Gospel ministry to His Church.

    > "As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you." (John 20:21)

The faithful Church becomes a trustworthy steward of God's mysteries.

    > "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." (1 Corin 4:2)
    ---

    Verse 12
    > "She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life."

The true Church seeks Christ's glory.

    > "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)

The Church's purpose is to honor her Bridegroom.
    ---

    Verses 13-19
    > She seeketh wool and flax... she worketh willingly...

    Spiritual Meaning
    The Church is not idle.
She serves, labors, ministers, evangelizes, disciples, and prays.

    > "Always abounding in the work of the Lord." (1 Corinthians 15:58)

    > "We are labourers together with
    God." (1 Corinthians 3:9)

The Bride is busy preparing herself for the coming of Christ.
    ---

    Verse 20
    > "She stretcheth out her hand to the poor."
    The Church reflects Christ's compassion.

    > "Pure religion and undefiled before God...
To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction." (James 1:27)

A true Church ministers to the needy.
    ---

    Verse 21
    > "She is not afraid of the snow for her household."

The faithful Church does not fear tribulation.

    > "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Because Christ provides spiritual covering and protection.
    ---

    Verse 22
    > "She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple."

    Spiritual Symbolism
The Church is clothed in Christ's righteousness.

    > "He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation." (Isaiah 61:10)

    > "That she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white." (Reve 19:8)

    Her beauty comes from grace.
    ---

    Verse 23
    > "Her husband is known in the gates."

    Christ Exalted

Because of the Church's witness, Christ is proclaimed among the nations.

    > "God also hath highly exalted him." (Philippians 2:9)

The Church's mission is to make Christ known.
    ---

    Verse 24
    > "She makes fine linen, and selleth it."

    The Church distributes spiritual treasures

    > "Freely ye have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:8)

    Theological Conclusion

Proverbs 31 is not merely the portrait of an ideal wife; in the light of the New Testament it also foreshadows the character of the Bride of Christ.

The Church is called to be:
    1. Faithful to her Bridegroom.
    2. Industrious in His service.
    3. Clothed with righteousness.
    4. Wise in speech.
    5. Compassionate in ministry.
    6. Watchful in holiness.
    7. Prepared for Christ's return.

The ultimate fulfillment of Proverbs 31 will be seen when the Church stands before Christ at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, clothed in righteousness and hearing her Bridegroom say:
    > "Let us be glad and rejoice... for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready." (Revelation 19:7)

Amen. "Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:20)
The Virtuous Wife as the Church and the Husband as Christ Proverbs 31:10–31 A Theological Expository Study Important Note: Proverbs 31:10–31 primarily describes a godly woman and godly wife. However, throughout Scripture, marriage is also a picture of the relationship between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:22-32). Therefore, we can make a typological and spiritual application of this passage to the Church, while preserving its original meaning. > "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church." (Ephesians 5:23) --- Verse 10 > "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." Literal Meaning A godly wife is rare and precious. Christ and the Church Christ purchased His Church with His own blood. > "Ye were not redeemed with corruptible things... But with the precious blood of Christ." (1 Peter 1:18-19) The Church is precious in His sight. > "Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it." (Ephesians 5:25) The Church's value does not come from herself but from Christ's redeeming love. --- Verse 11 > "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her." Spiritual Application: Christ entrusts His Gospel ministry to His Church. > "As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you." (John 20:21) The faithful Church becomes a trustworthy steward of God's mysteries. > "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." (1 Corin 4:2) --- Verse 12 > "She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life." The true Church seeks Christ's glory. > "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31) The Church's purpose is to honor her Bridegroom. --- Verses 13-19 > She seeketh wool and flax... she worketh willingly... Spiritual Meaning The Church is not idle. She serves, labors, ministers, evangelizes, disciples, and prays. > "Always abounding in the work of the Lord." (1 Corinthians 15:58) > "We are labourers together with God." (1 Corinthians 3:9) The Bride is busy preparing herself for the coming of Christ. --- Verse 20 > "She stretcheth out her hand to the poor." The Church reflects Christ's compassion. > "Pure religion and undefiled before God... To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction." (James 1:27) A true Church ministers to the needy. --- Verse 21 > "She is not afraid of the snow for her household." The faithful Church does not fear tribulation. > "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) Because Christ provides spiritual covering and protection. --- Verse 22 > "She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple." Spiritual Symbolism The Church is clothed in Christ's righteousness. > "He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation." (Isaiah 61:10) > "That she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white." (Reve 19:8) Her beauty comes from grace. --- Verse 23 > "Her husband is known in the gates." Christ Exalted Because of the Church's witness, Christ is proclaimed among the nations. > "God also hath highly exalted him." (Philippians 2:9) The Church's mission is to make Christ known. --- Verse 24 > "She makes fine linen, and selleth it." The Church distributes spiritual treasures > "Freely ye have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:8) She shares the Gospel to the world. --- Verse 25 > "Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come." The Church possesses spiritual strength. > "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might." (Ephesians 6:10) She rejoices because she awaits Christ's return. > "Looking for that blessed hope." (Titus 2:13) --- Verse 26 > "She openeth her mouth with wisdom." The Church proclaims God's truth. > "Preach the word." • John 19:

"1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
    8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand."
John 19: "1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. 4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe.
