  • The Story Behind the Hymns.
THE STORY BEHIND "O THOU WHO CAMEST FROM ABOVE"

“O Thou Who Camest From Above” is a deeply devotional Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1762. The hymn expresses a heartfelt prayer for the Holy Spirit to descend upon the believer, purify the heart, and set the soul ablaze with divine love.

Charles Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist movement alongside his brother John Wesley, wrote thousands of hymns that helped communicate Christian faith through memorable poetry and song. In this hymn, Wesley draws on the imagery of heavenly fire, asking God to kindle that sacred flame within the human heart.

The opening words, “O Thou who camest from above,” refer to Christ and the divine presence coming from heaven. The hymn then develops the theme of spiritual transformation: the believer longs to be cleansed, strengthened and completely devoted to God.

One of its best-known lines is:

    “Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire
To work, and speak, and think for Thee.”

This captures the central prayer of the hymn that every thought, word and action should be directed toward Christ.

The hymn is particularly associated with the Methodist tradition and has remained popular across Christian denominations. Its message continues to resonate because it is not simply a song of praise; it is a personal prayer for holiness, spiritual renewal and a life completely surrendered to God.

“O Thou Who Camest From Above” reminds believers that Christian service begins with an inward transformation, asking God to light the flame of faith within the heart and keep it burning.

  • Daily Devotional
Sing and pray with my neighbors.

They sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped. 2 Chronicles 29:30

The presentation of the truth in love and sympathy, from house to house, is in harmony with the instruction that Christ gave to His disciples when He sent them out on their first missionary tour. By songs of praise to God, by humble, heartfelt prayers, by a simple presentation of Bible truth in the family circle, many will be reached. The divine James worker will be present to send conviction to hearts. “I am with you alway” is His promise. With the assurance of the abiding presence of such a Helper, we may labor with hope and faith and courage.

Those who have the gift of song are needed. Song is one of the most effective means of impressing spiritual truth upon the heart. Often by the words of sacred songs the springs of penitence and faith have been unsealed.... Church members, young and old, should be educated to go forth to proclaim this last message to the world. If they go in humility, angels of God will go with them, teaching them how to lift up the voice in prayer, how to raise the voice in song, and how to proclaim the gospel message for this time.

Learn to sing the simplest of songs. These will help you in house-to-house labor, and hearts will be touched by the influence of the Holy Spirit. Christ was often heard singing hymns of praise.... There was joy in His heart. We learn from the Word that there is joy among the angels of heaven over one repentant sinner and that the Lord rejoices over His church with singing.

As, like the disciples, you go from place to place telling the story of the Saviour’s love, you will make friends and will see the fruit of your labor. [239]

    TOPIC: BREAKING COVENANTS, PART 2

    MEMORIZE:
"Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" 1 John 4:4 (KJV)

    BIBLE READING: 2 CORINTHIANS 5:17-19
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

    18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

    MESSAGE:
Years ago, one of my daughters in the Lord came to me and said, "Daddy, a young man approached me and said he wants to marry me." I congratulated her, but she replied, "Daddy, my father told me that I was dedicated to a river goddess when I was born, and a covenant was made that whoever I marry is going to die on our wedding day. I don't want the young man to die." I told her that I know someone stronger than the river goddess. We prayed a simple prayer, and she left. The next time I saw her, she was happily married and already had a baby. I declare that any evil force that might be hindering your progress is destroyed today, in Jesus' name.

A new and greater covenant can cancel a previously existing one. For instance, if you want to break a covenant with someone, all you need to do is enter into a covenant with someone greater; the greater fellow can release you from the lesser person's covenant by force. If a person enters into a covenant with the devil, the moment he or she enters into a covenant with God, He will wipe out all evil covenants from the fellow's life. God's covenant is superior to any other covenant. Our God is stronger than the strongest; therefore, once a person enters into a covenant with Him, He will bind any strong man who was previously in charge of the fellow's life and throw him out.

It is also important to note that the devil still seeks to retain his strongholds in the lives of people even after they have become born again. A stronghold is a deeply entrenched evil pattern that the devil has instilled in a person, and it must be addressed. Otherwise, the person will continue to operate under its influence even after he or she has become born again. Such strongholds typically include bitterness, pride, generational curses, anger, and other similar issues.

Beloved, (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) urges us to pull down strongholds and cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. If you are a party to any evil covenant or are under the influence of any demonic stronghold, cry out to God today to deliver you by His mighty power. I join my faith with yours and decree that you are completely free from any evil covenant or demonic stronghold that might be in your life, in Jesus' name.

    KEY POINT:
Having a covenant with God annuls every evil covenant in a person's life.

    BIBLE READING IN ONE YEAR:
    LAMENTATIONS 1 - 2

    AUTHOR: PASTOR E. A. ADEBOYE

HYMNAL 10 - IN CHRIST ALONE
1 In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
    This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

2 In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

3 There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
    Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

    TOPIC: BREAKING COVENANTS 2

    MEMORISE
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. - (1 John 4:4)

    READ: 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 (KJV)
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
    18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

    MESSAGE

    KEY POINT
Having a covenant with God annuls every evil covenant in a person's life.

    BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
    Lamentations 1 - 2

HYMN 10 - IN CHRIST ALONE
    1. In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
    This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

    2. In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

    3. There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

    4. No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
    Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

  • I wrote this song through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, with a message that is deeply rooted in the journey of purpose:
What God has ordained for you may not happen in a hurry.
Never despise the authenticity of a vision simply because it is taking time to manifest. In life, great things are rarely accomplished in haste. There is a process attached to every genuine assignment.
Think about Jesus—God Himself—who came to the earth as a baby. He embraced the entire process of growth, both physically and spiritually, until He came into the fullness of His assignment.
There is power in waiting on God.
The waiting season is not a wasted season. It is where God develops our character, builds our stamina, strengthens our faith, and prepares us to do great exploits.
Embrace the process. Trust the timing. Honour the waiting.
What God has shown you will come to pass in His appointed time.
    God bless you.

Here’s The Only Way to Begin to Love

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:10-11

The greatest rivers in the world usually begin on the cold, frozen slopes of high mountains as the sun begins to melt snow and ice, and from the trickle of crystal-clear water a steam begins to flow and eventually a cascade of water plummets down the mountain. In the valley far below, the stream becomes a river, then a great river which we call the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges, the Rhine, or whatever. By the time these massive bodies of water reach the ocean, they may be kilometers wide, and they are muddy and polluted.

Now, apply that same concept to the biblical truth that God is love. John tells us this in the New Testament, and the farther we are from Him, seemingly the more polluted love becomes. By the time it has been filtered through human lust, what we call love is a far cry from the compelling love which caused God to send His Son long ago.

Love is not a platitude, it is an action, an unconditional commitment to care, a decision of your heart. True, love is what the world needs. The words of a song popular a generation ago said it all: “The world is dying, dying for a little bit of love,” says one verse.

If you’ve been following this series based on Paul’s great chapter on love, found in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 13, you have focused on love’s characteristics, but any discussion of the subject would be incomplete without a few words of encouragement for you whose river of love has either evaporated in the desert of life, or else become so polluted you hardly know what the real thing is.

When God touches your heart, your life will change. God takes up residence in your life, and the mud of sin is washed away. When pollution is eliminated, you start loving. This is the miracle of conversion. This is the answer to the lovelessness and the selfishness which destroys relationships.

Joining a church, turning over a new leaf, going to confession, just “being religious,” is not the solution. A relationship with God through His son is the only way you will really begin to love.

I will give you three simple guidelines that will help.

Guideline #1: Acknowledge you need a relationship with God and confess that sin has stopped the flow of love in your life. It’s easy to point a finger and say, “Well, it was his fault; her fault.” The solution is saying, “God, I need you. Forgive me. Touch my life.”

Guideline #2: Ask God’s forgiveness for your failure—not the other person’s—and ask Him to be Lord and Savior. Jesus gave us a promise. He said, “I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and have fellowship with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). That promise has your name on it, friend.

Guideline #3: Begin loving in simple steps, one day at a time. When you fail and fall back into those old habits and a loveless way, quickly admit your wrong; ask God’s help to overcome it.

Friend, you can talk about love until you have calluses on your vocal cords, but until you get back to the fountain and the source of love, who is God Himself, you’ll never lay hold of the real thing: the God kind of love that changes the world. So, go back to the source. It’s the only way to fill your cup and have enough left over for someone else in your life. Love is not a pious platitude. It’s the answer.

  • The Kitchen Newsletter

    Good day,
Welcome to The Kitchen, where we explore, prepare and serve the contents in the Body of the Word as the delicacies of God—to create the form of the Father on the earth, to make the earth in His likeness, and to take charge of the economic destinies of nations for God.

Relax, and let's journey through the scriptures to see the Body of the Word.

    What does God look like?

It is a simple question, but Scripture gives us an answer that is far more concrete than we often realise.

The Bible calls God invisible. Yet Scripture also tells us that the invisible God has made Himself known—not merely through ideas, doctrines, or written sentences, but through a Person.

John, on the island of Patmos, saw Him.

“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me…”

And what John saw was astonishing: a figure with a head and hair, eyes, feet, a voice, hands, a face and a mouth. John was describing the appearance of Jesus Christ—the living Word of God.

    Revelation 1:12–17

    This is why Scripture says:

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.”

    Hebrews 1:3

    And again:

“Christ, who is the image of God.”

    2 Corinthians 4:4

    So we can say:

The Body of the Word is the image of the invisible God.

    The Scriptures Reveal a Person

This changes the way we should read Scripture.

We are accustomed to reading the Bible primarily as a collection of words, teachings, commandments, promises and historical accounts. But Scripture itself tells us that the Scriptures testify about a Person.

    Jesus said:

“These are the Scriptures that testify about me.”

    John 5:39

The Scriptures are therefore not merely information about God. They testify about Jesus Christ, the living Word.

    Consider one example.

John saw the eyes of Christ and wrote:

“His eyes were like blazing fire.”

    Revelation 1:14

That is a detailed description of the Body of the Word.

    But Scripture also says:

“Our God is a consuming fire.”

    Hebrews 12:29

The description of the Body therefore becomes a revelation about God Himself.

The same principle runs through the Scriptures: the details of the Body of the Word testify about the Person of the Word and reveal the invisible Father.

    Paul writes:

“God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

    2 Corinthians 4:6

The “face of Christ” becomes a point of revelation—the Body of the Word revealing the invisible God.

    Scripture Must Be Unfolded

This is where something particularly provocative begins to emerge.

What if the Scriptures are not simply information about God, but the Father's script for revealing Himself?

    Psalm 119:130 says:

“The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”

    Psalm 119:130

    The Word must be unfolded.

We can read a Scripture without necessarily seeing the revelation contained within it.

We can know the sentence without knowing the Person whom the sentence reveals.

That is the difference between merely reading Scripture and receiving revelation.

The detailed descriptions of the Body of the Word are therefore not decorative language. They are scriptural descriptions that can be unfolded to reveal the Father.

    Paul describes this revelation as:

“the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

    2 Corinthians 4:6

So the purpose of the unfolding is not simply to give us more biblical information.

It is to give us the revelation knowledge of the Father.

The Body of the Word: White Like Wool and Snow

    Consider the description John gives:

“His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow.”

    Revelation 1:14

This is a detailed description of the Body of the Word.

But John is not alone in seeing this.

Daniel saw the Ancient of Days and wrote:

“His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool.”

    Daniel 7:9

Then Song of Solomon gives another description:

    “His appearance is like Lebanon.”

    Song of Solomon 5:15

Lebanon was associated with its mountainous, snow-covered appearance.

The Scriptures are therefore giving us a repeated picture.

The Body of the Word is white like wool, as white as snow.

    And because Christ is:

“the exact representation of his being”

    Hebrews 1:3

the description of Christ also becomes a revelation concerning the invisible God.

This is why the details matter.

    The head matters.

    The hair matters.

    The eyes matter.

    The face matters.

    The hands matter.

    The feet matter.

    The mouth matters.

    The voice matters.

The entire Body becomes a vocabulary through which Scripture speaks about the Person of the Word.

The Body Is More Than a Description

Every detailed description of the Body of the Word is also a Scripture because it testifies about the Person of the Word.

    Jesus said:

“These are the Scriptures that testify about me.”

    John 5:39

Therefore, the description of His whiteness is not simply a physical observation.

    It is a testimony.

    It is a Scripture.

It is a figure of speech.

It is a revelation waiting to be unfolded.

And Scripture gives us a principle for understanding this:

“I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”

    Matthew 13:35

God uses visible and natural things to communicate invisible and spiritual realities.

The Body of the Word is therefore not merely something we look at.

It is something Scripture teaches us to understand.

The Father Is Speaking Through the Body

Isaiah gives us another remarkable statement:

“The hand of the Lord will be made known to his servants.”

    Isaiah 66:14

    Why the hand?

Because the hand is part of the body.

The hand becomes a doorway into understanding the Body of the Word.

And the Body becomes a doorway into understanding the Person of the Word.

And the Person of the Word reveals the invisible Father.

    Body → Person → Father.

This is why I believe Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, is addressing His Church through the detailed descriptions of His Body.

He is continually making the Father known.

    Jesus said:

“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”

    John 14:9

And the Holy Spirit does not speak independently of Christ. Jesus said:

“He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”

    John 16:14

The Spirit takes what belongs to Christ and makes it known.

    And Paul tells us:

“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”

    1 Corinthians 2:10

So there are depths in God that the Holy Spirit searches and reveals.

Scripture Is God's Script for His Work

There is another dimension to this revelation.

The Scriptures are not merely records of what God has done. They are also the script through which His purposes are fulfilled.

    Again and again, Jesus said:

    “It is written…”

    Matthew 4:4, 7, 10

    And concerning His ministry:

“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

    Luke 4:21

The Scriptures therefore have a relationship with God's performance on Earth.

When the Father has an intention, He opens Scripture according to that intention.

When He is doing a work, He brings particular Scriptures into revelation.

When the Spirit speaks to the churches, He speaks through what is being revealed:

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

    Revelation 2:7

This makes the present question very important:

What is the Spirit saying to the Church through the Scriptures He is opening?

And if Christ is presently revealing Himself through the detailed descriptions of His Body, then these revelations deserve our attention.

The Body of the Word Is Our Inheritance

The Father has not given us Christ merely so that we can know facts about Him.

He has given us Christ so that we can know Him.

The Body of the Word is therefore not something we should approach casually.

    It is an inheritance.

    It is a revelation.

It is an invitation to know the Person of the Word in greater detail.

    The Scriptures testify about Him.

    The Holy Spirit reveals Him.

The Father is seen in Him.

And the more the Scriptures are unfolded, the more light we receive concerning the Person of Christ and the glory of the invisible Father.

So perhaps the question is no longer simply:

    “Do you read the Bible?”

    The deeper question is:

“Do you recognise the Person whom the Scriptures are revealing?”

    Because the Bible is testifying.

    The Spirit is speaking.

    The Scriptures are being unfolded.

And behind the revelation stands a Person:

Jesus Christ, the living Word of God—the image of the invisible God.

The Kitchen Newsletter Good day, Welcome to The Kitchen, where we explore, prepare and serve the contents in the Body of the Word as the delicacies of God—to create the form of the Father on the earth, to make the earth in His likeness, and to take charge of the economic destinies of nations for God. “I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me…” And what John saw was astonishing: a figure with a head and hair, eyes, feet, a voice, hands, a face and a mouth. John was describing the appearance of Jesus Christ—the living Word of God. Revelation 1:12–17 This is why Scripture says: “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.” Hebrews 1:3 And again: “Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:4 So we can say: The Body of the Word is the image of the invisible God. The Scriptures Reveal a Person This changes the way we should read Scripture. We are accustomed to reading the Bible primarily as a collection of words, teachings, commandments, promises and historical accounts. But Scripture itself tells us that the Scriptures testify about a Person. Jesus said: “These are the Scriptures that testify about me.” John 5:39 The Scriptures are therefore not merely information about God. They testify about Jesus Christ, the living Word. Consider one example. John saw the eyes of Christ and wrote: “His eyes were like blazing fire.” Revelation 1:14 That is a detailed description of the Body of the Word. But Scripture also says: “Our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29 The description of the Body therefore becomes a revelation about God Himself. The same principle runs through the Scriptures: the details of the Body of the Word testify about the Person of the Word and reveal the invisible Father. Paul writes: “God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 4:6 The “face of Christ” becomes a point of revelation—the Body of the Word revealing the invisible God. Scripture Must Be Unfolded This is where something particularly provocative begins to emerge. What if the Scriptures are not simply information about God, but the Father's script for revealing Himself? Psalm 119:130 says: “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130 The Word must be unfolded. Paul describes this revelation as: “the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 4:6 So the purpose of the unfolding is not simply to give us more biblical information. It is to give us the revelation knowledge of the Father. The Body of the Word: White Like Wool and Snow Consider the description John gives: “His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow.” Revelation 1:14 This is a detailed description of the Body of the Word. But John is not alone in seeing this. Daniel saw the Ancient of Days and wrote: “His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool.” Daniel 7:9 Then Song of Solomon gives another description: “His appearance is like Lebanon.” Song of Solomon 5:15 Lebanon was associated with its mountainous, snow-covered appearance. The Scriptures are therefore giving us a repeated picture. The Body of the Word is white like wool, as white as snow. And because Christ is: “the exact representation of his being” Hebrews 1:3 the description of Christ also becomes a revelation concerning the invisible God. This is why the details matter. The head matters. The hair matters. The eyes matter. The face matters. The hands matter. The feet matter. The mouth matters. The voice matters. The entire Body becomes a vocabulary through which Scripture speaks about the Person of the Word. The Body Is More Than a Description Every detailed description of the Body of the Word is also a Scripture because it testifies about the Person of the Word. Jesus said: “These are the Scriptures that testify about me.” John 5:39 Therefore, the description of His whiteness is not simply a physical observation. It is a testimony. It is a Scripture. It is a figure of speech. It is a revelation waiting to be unfolded. And Scripture gives us a principle for understanding this: “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.” Matthew 13:35 God uses visible and natural things to communicate invisible and spiritual realities. The Body of the Word is therefore not merely something we look at. It is something Scripture teaches us to understand. The Father Is Speaking Through the Body Isaiah gives us another remarkable statement: “The hand of the Lord will be made known to his servants.” Isaiah 66:14 Why the hand? Because the hand is part of the body. The hand becomes a doorway into understanding the Body of the Word. And the Body becomes a doorway into understanding the Person of the Word. And the Person of the Word reveals the invisible Father. Body → Person → Father. This is why I believe Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, is addressing His Church through the detailed descriptions of His Body. He is continually making the Father known. Jesus said: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” John 14:9 And the Holy Spirit does not speak independently of Christ. Jesus said: “He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.” John 16:14 The Spirit takes what belongs to Christ and makes it known. And Paul tells us: “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10 So there are depths in God that the Holy Spirit searches and reveals. Scripture Is God's Script for His Work There is another dimension to this revelation. The Scriptures are not merely records of what God has done. They are also the script through which His purposes are fulfilled. Again and again, Jesus said: “It is written…” Matthew 4:4, 7, 10 And concerning His ministry: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:21 The Scriptures therefore have a relationship with God's performance on Earth. When the Father has an intention, He opens Scripture according to that intention. When He is doing a work, He brings particular Scriptures into revelation. When the Spirit speaks to the churches, He speaks through what is being revealed: “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Revelation 2:7 This makes the present question very important: What is the Spirit saying to the Church through the Scriptures He is opening? And if Christ is presently revealing Himself through the detailed descriptions of His Body, then these revelations deserve our attention. The Body of the Word Is Our Inheritance The Father has not given us Christ merely so that we can know facts about Him. He has given us Christ so that we can know Him.
