WHAT ARE YOU CARRYING? We can become so focused on what we are doing for God that we forget to ask what is happening within us. Jesus said: “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45) Eventually, what fills us finds its way out. If we continually carry frustration, it will surface. If we carry bitterness, it will colour how we see people. If we carry fear, it will influence our decisions. But when our hearts are being filled with the presence, truth and love of Christ, something different begins to overflow. Grace enters our conversations. Peace steadies our reactions. Compassion changes how we see people. Hope becomes something we naturally give away. Being a Kingdom Carrier is not only about what we carry to the world. It is also about what we allow God to build within us. Kingdom Carriers | The Kingdom the Father Delights to Give There is a remarkable sentence Jesus spoke that we can easily read too quickly: "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom." — Luke 12:32 Think about those words. The Father has been pleased to give you the Kingdom. Jesus had just been speaking about worry. What will we eat? What will we wear? How will our needs be met? These are deeply human concerns. Yet Jesus redirects their attention from what they were trying to secure to what the Father was pleased to give. The Kingdom. Perhaps that's where anxiety often exposes something deeper. We become consumed with securing what the Father already knows we need. Jesus doesn't deny those needs. He changes their order. "Seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well." — Luke 12:31 The world teaches us to build life from the outside in: Secure enough. Accumulate enough. Control enough. Then perhaps we will have peace. Jesus reverses the order. Begin with the King and His Kingdom. Then allow everything else to find its proper place beneath His rule. And perhaps the most beautiful part is this: The Father isn't reluctant. Jesus says He is pleased to give us the Kingdom. We are not trying to persuade an unwilling God to release His purposes. We are responding to a Father who delights in bringing His children under the goodness of His reign. So maybe Kingdom living isn't primarily about acquiring more from God. Kingdom Carriers | Beyond the Uniform Around midday on Wednesday, I was making my way to the hospital chapel for our weekly time of fellowship and prayer. As I approached, I noticed a gentleman from our security team sitting quietly inside. From a distance, the uniform caught my attention first. But then I noticed something else. He was reading his Bible. I had seen him around the hospital before. We had exchanged greetings in passing, but we had never really stopped to talk. This time I did. I introduced myself, and he told me his name was Tama. I explained that a few of us gather in the chapel every Wednesday around midday for fellowship and prayer, and that he would always be welcome to join us. As others began arriving and our fellowship was about to start, I sensed Tama would soon need to return to his duties. So before he left, I excused myself for a moment and brought him a copy of Kingdom Carriers. He received it gratefully. I watched briefly as he looked at the front cover, turned it over, and began reading the back. Then he returned to his duties. That was it. No long conversation. No dramatic ending. And I don't know what God will do with that brief encounter. But afterwards, one thought stayed with me: At first I saw a uniform. When I stopped, I met a brother. How easily we identify people by what we first see. The uniform. The occupation. The position. The label. But Jesus consistently looked beyond what people did and saw the person standing before Him. Perhaps there are people we pass regularly whose faces we recognise, but whose names we have never learnt. Sometimes a Kingdom encounter doesn't begin with preaching. It begins by stopping long enough to see the person. Wednesday reminded me: There is always more to someone than the uniform they wear. I sowed a small seed. Kingdom Carriers | What Do You Really Own? We spend much of our lives acquiring things. Our money. Our possessions. Our careers. Our gifts. Our time. Our achievements. And without realising it, one small word begins appearing everywhere: Mine. But the Kingdom confronts that word. Scripture declares: "The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it." — Psalm 24:1 If everything ultimately belongs to Him, then perhaps the better question isn't, "What do I own?" but, "What has the King entrusted to me?" That changes everything. My resources become stewardship. My abilities become stewardship. My influence becomes stewardship. My opportunities become stewardship. Even my time becomes stewardship. Paul asked a penetrating question: "What do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Corinthians 4:7) Think about that. If I received it, I cannot ultimately claim to be its source. And if God entrusted it to me, then I must eventually answer for how I carried it. Kingdom living therefore moves us from ownership to stewardship. The question is no longer simply, "What can I get?" It becomes, "Lord, what do You want me to do with what You have placed in my hands?" Perhaps this is one of the great freedoms of Kingdom living: I don't have to possess everything I carry. Kingdom Carriers | The Hidden Life We often recognise spiritual growth by what we can see. The fruit.The influence. The opportunities.The things God appears to be doing through someone's life. But Jesus consistently drew attention to something deeper. Before there is fruit above the ground, there must be life beneath it. Roots grow where nobody applauds. They deepen in darkness. They draw nourishment quietly. And for a long time, there may be very little evidence above the surface of what is happening below. Our spiritual lives are much the same. The prayers nobody hears.The choices nobody sees. The forgiveness nobody knows was difficult. The temptation quietly resisted. The Scripture carried in the heart. The obedience that receives no recognition. These things may never become testimonies we tell publicly. But they are forming roots. And perhaps this is where we sometimes misunderstand the Kingdom. We ask God for greater fruit, while He may be working on deeper roots. Jesus said: "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine." (John 15:4). The Kingdom is not sustained by visibility. It is sustained by abiding. Maybe the question isn't, "What is God doing through me?" Perhaps the deeper question is. Kingdom Carriers | Availability One of the greatest qualities God looks for isn't ability. It's availability. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly worked through ordinary men and women who simply made themselves available. Isaiah said, "Here am I. Send me." The boy with five loaves and two fish simply offered what he had. The disciples left their nets and followed. None of them knew where the journey would lead. But they made themselves available. I've often discovered that God doesn't ask me to have all the answers. He simply asks me to be willing. Willing to listen. Willing to obey. Willing to encourage. Willing to serve. Perhaps we've spent too much time asking, "Lord, make me more capable." When a better prayer might be, "Lord, make me more available." Because when our lives are available to God, He has a remarkable way of doing far more than we could ever accomplish on our own. Kingdom Carriers | God Was Already There This week, our workplace fellowship gathered in the hospital chapel for a time of prayer. As I entered, I noticed a gentleman sitting quietly on his own. I greeted him and let him know that we met there regularly and that he was welcome to join us if he wished. He thanked me, but chose to remain where he was. And that was perfectly okay. Our fellowship continued as usual. We shared from God's Word, prayed together, and just before closing .  As we finished, something unexpected happened. The gentleman walked over to us and asked, "May I pray for you'll?" "Absolutely," I replied. What a privilege it was to have someone we had only just met pray over our fellowship. Afterwards we spent some time talking. As he shared his journey of faith, I was deeply encouraged by God's work in his life and by the legacy of faith within his family. As we spoke, one word kept stirring in my heart: Mission. I excused myself, walked back to my office, collected a number of copies of Kingdom Carriers along with a copy of Hope Rising, and returned to the chapel. He was still there. With great joy, I placed the books into his hands. As I walked away, I couldn't help but smile. I hadn't gone to the chapel looking for someone to give books to. Now I often ask Him to help me recognise where He's already at work. It changes the way you see people. It changes the way you approach your day. Kingdom Carriers | More Than a Transaction Recently, while out preparing for an upcoming winter trip, I stopped to look for a few things and ended up in conversation with a young man helping me at a store. What began as ordinary small talk gradually moved into deeper things, work, faith, writing, and purpose. At one point, while entering my details into the system, he paused and laughed: "We have the same name." The conversation continued. He shared that he was a Christian, asked questions about my writing, and wanted to know more about the season I was in. After denying Jesus three times, Peter carried shame, disappointment, and perhaps the belief that he had disqualified himself. Yet when Jesus met him again, He did not begin with accusation. He asked: “Do you love Me?” — John 21 Three times the question came. And with every response, Jesus entrusted Peter again: Feed My sheep. What strikes me is this: Jesus did not merely restore Peter. He recommissioned him into the Kingdom.  Failure was not the end of Peter’s calling. And perhaps for some reading this: Your disappointment, delay, or past mistakes has not cancelled what God intends to do through your life. The Kingdom still has room for restored people. Kingdom Carriers | Beyond What We See Earlier this week, during my usual coffee stop, someone gently tapped my shoulder and greeted me. I recognised the face, but not immediately the name. She apologised for not being able to continue attending the workplace prayer and fellowship after coming once. Then, almost casually, she mentioned: "I read your book, Kingdom Carriers." We spoke for a while, and she later asked about my other books and expressed interest in Hope Rising. What quietly stayed with me afterwards was this: I don’t actually know how she received a copy of Kingdom Carriers. I certainly didn’t give her one. It was a simple reminder that not everything God is doing is visible to us. Sometimes the seed travels further than we realise. Sometimes the encouragement comes through an unexpected conversation in an ordinary coffee queue. The Kingdom continues moving, even beyond our awareness. All glory and honour belong to Him.
