JESUS: THE MIRACLE WORKER AND TEMPLE OF GOD

    TEXT: JOHN 2:1–25

    KEY VERSE:

«“This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” — John 2:11 (KJV)»

John 2 introduces us to two significant events in the ministry of Jesus: His first recorded miracle at Cana and His cleansing of the temple.

These two events reveal something powerful about Jesus.

He is not only able to change circumstances; He also desires to cleanse and transform lives.

At Cana, Jesus turned water into wine.

In the temple, Jesus confronted everything that had corrupted a place meant for worship.

    The message is clear:

Jesus has power to transform what is empty, restore what is broken, and cleanse what has become polluted.

    THREE LESSONS FROM JOHN 2

    INVITE JESUS INTO YOUR SITUATION.

At the wedding in Cana, the wine ran out.

Mary brought the situation to Jesus.

    John 2:3 says:

    «“They have no wine.”»

The situation appeared embarrassing and hopeless.

    But Jesus was present.

Sometimes we focus so much on what is missing that we forget who is present.

You may have a situation that seems impossible today.

You may have run out of strength.

You may have run out of resources.

You may feel like your joy has disappeared.

But if Jesus is present, there is still hope.

    Take your situation to Jesus.

    Don't only complain about it.

    Don't surrender to fear.

Don't depend solely on human strength.

    Bring it to Christ. 🏽

JESUS CAN TRANSFORM THE ORDINARY INTO SOMETHING GLORIOUS.

Jesus instructed the servants to fill six waterpots with water.

    Then He performed the miracle.

    Water became wine.

John 2:9 records the servants' astonishment at what had happened.

This teaches us that Jesus can take ordinary things and use them for extraordinary purposes.

    Your life may look ordinary.

    Your resources may seem small.

    Your abilities may seem insignificant.

But when you place them in the hands of Jesus, He can do something extraordinary.

Never underestimate what God can do with a surrendered life.

    Your testimony can change.

    Your character can change.

    Your family can change.

    Your ministry can change.

    Your future can change.

    Jesus is still a transformer.

OBEDIENCE IS PART OF THE MIRACLE.

The servants at Cana had a role to play.

They had to fill the waterpots.

They had to draw out the water.

They had to obey the instructions of Jesus.

They did not understand everything Jesus was doing, but they obeyed.

Sometimes we want to see God's miracle while refusing to follow God's instructions.

But faith and obedience belong together.

    When Jesus says forgive—obey.

    When Jesus says pray—obey.

    When Jesus says leave sin—obey.

    When Jesus says serve—obey.

    When Jesus says go—obey.

You don't need to understand everything before you obey God.

    JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE

Later in John 2, Jesus entered the temple and found people buying and selling.

The house of worship had become a marketplace.

Jesus drove them out and declared:

«“Make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.” — John 2:16»

Jesus was deeply concerned about the holiness of God's house.

This should challenge us as believers.

Paul later teaches that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.

    Therefore, we must ask:

What have I allowed into my life that Jesus would want to remove?

Are there attitudes that need to go?

Is there bitterness that needs to go?

Is there secret sin that needs to go?

Are there relationships that are pulling you away from God?

Are there habits that are damaging your spiritual life?

    LET JESUS CLEAN YOUR TEMPLE

Sometimes we ask Jesus to bless our lives while resisting His desire to cleanse our lives.

We want His miracles but not His correction.

We want His blessings but not His discipline.

We want His presence but not His holiness.

    But Jesus does both:

    He transforms and He cleanses.

Allow Him to examine your heart.

Allow Him to remove what does not glorify Him.

Allow Him to restore your spiritual altar.

DON'T TURN YOUR WORSHIP INTO A TRANSACTION

The temple was designed for worship, but it had become a place of business.

This warns us against treating God like a transaction.

Don't serve God only because you want something.

Don't pray only when you need something.

Don't worship only when life is going well.

Don't follow Christ only for blessings.

Jesus deserves our worship because He is Lord.

JESUS KNOWS WHAT IS IN OUR HEARTS

John 2:24–25 says that Jesus knew all people and knew what was in man.

You may hide things from people, but nothing is hidden from Christ.

    He knows your thoughts.

    He knows your motives.

    He knows your struggles.

    He knows your secret battles.

And yet He still calls you closer.

Therefore, don't run from Jesus because of what He already knows.

    Run to Him for transformation.

    ✍🏽 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

When Jesus enters your life, He does not only change your circumstances; He also cleanses your heart and transforms you into a vessel for His glory.

    🏽 PRAYER

    Heavenly Father,

Thank You for revealing the power and glory of Jesus Christ through His Word.

Lord Jesus, come into every area of my life. Transform what needs to be transformed and restore what has been broken.

Teach me to trust You even when I do not understand Your ways. Give me grace to obey Your Word completely.

Cleanse my heart from every attitude, habit, desire, relationship, and sin that does not glorify You.

Make my life a holy temple where Your presence is welcomed and Your name is honored.

Help me never to treat my relationship with You as a transaction. Let my worship come from a genuine heart that loves and honors You.

May Your glory be revealed through my life.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen. 🏽

  • DOMINION DAILY DEVOTION ~ DAY 227
    DATE: 15TH AUGUST 2026
TOPIC: COME BACK TO THE FATHER
    ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:Psalm 103:3 (NLT)
“He forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.”
    Devotional message:

One of the greatest revelations we can receive about the heart of God is that His mercy is greater than our failures. The Psalmist declares that the Lord forgives all our sins, reminding us that no matter how far we have wandered or how seriously we have fallen, there is still an invitation to return to God through genuine repentance.

Perhaps you have drifted far from the Lord. Perhaps there are things you have done that you are ashamed of, or secret failures that have made you believe that God could never receive you again. But child of God, your sin is not a reason to remain in sin. It is a reason to return to the Father.

God gives us a beautiful invitation through the prophet Isaiah:Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV)“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow.”

Notice that God does not tell the sinner to clean himself before coming. He says, “Come.” Restoration begins when we respond to His invitation.

The Apostle John gives us further assurance:1 John 1:9 (NKJV)“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

God's forgiveness is not based on how deserving we feel. It is based on His faithfulness and the finished work of Christ. Therefore, do not allow shame and condemnation to keep you hidden from the One who desires to restore you.

Consider the prodigal son. He believed that his failure had disqualified him from being a son and that perhaps the best he could become was a servant. Yet when he returned, his father ran to meet him, embraced him, clothed him, and restored him to his place.

This is a picture of the heart of our Heavenly Father.

The enemy may tell you, “You have gone too far.” God says, “Come back.”The enemy may tell you, “You are no longer worthy to be called His child.” The Father says, “Return to Me.”The enemy may tell you, “You must remain in your shame.” Christ offers forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration.

Child of God, do not continue hiding in the same sin simply because you have already fallen. Do not allow one failure to become a lifestyle. Come back to the Lord. Confess your sin. Repent. Receive His forgiveness. Allow Him to cleanse you and begin again.

When God forgives, He does not forgive you so that you can continue living in the same bondage; He forgives you so that you can rise and walk in freedom.

As Jesus said:John 8:36 (NKJV)“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Your past may explain where you have been, but it does not have to determine where you are going. There is restoration in the Father's house.

    PRAYER

Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your unfailing mercy and abundant forgiveness. Thank You that my failures do not make You stop loving me. Give me the grace to come before You honestly, confess my sins, and turn away from every wrong path.Help me to live from this day forward in obedience, holiness, and intimate fellowship with You.In Jesus' name, Amen.

    SATURDAY

    GOD'S WORD FOR THE DAY

    “Set Apart for God”

    Leviticus 12:7

“He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood. “ ‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl.”

This is the Word of God. Leviticus 12 describes the purification process after childbirth and reminds Israel that approaching God was to be taken seriously. The required offering also shows God's provision for restoration and renewed fellowship.

For us, it points to the importance of recognizing our need for God's cleansing and grace. We do not approach Him because of our own perfection, but because He graciously provides a way for us to draw near.

May God help us value His holiness, depend on His grace, and live each day set apart for Him. Amen.

Have a blessed day with the Lord.

  • Daily Bible Lesson.
TRUTH IS NOT POPULAR—WHY DO SO FEW FOLLOW JESUS IN HIS OWN SABBATH PATH?

“As His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day.” — Luke 4:16

Luke does not describe a rare visit.

    He reveals Christ’s custom.

The Sabbath was not an accident in His life.
It was part of His faithful walk with the Father.

TRUTH IS NOT DECIDED BY THE CROWD

Noah stood with God while the world laughed.

Elijah stood for truth while a nation compromised.

Jesus stood upon Scripture while religious leaders defended tradition.

    The crowd may be sincere—

    and still be wrong.

“Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil.” — Exodus 23:2

    Jesus did not ask:

    What is popular?
    What is comfortable?
    What does the majority practice?

    He answered:

“It is written.” — Matthew 4:4

Truth is not settled by numbers.

It is settled by God’s Word.

JESUS LEFT AN EXAMPLE—NOT MERELY A MESSAGE

    Jesus did not only say:

    “Believe in Me.”

    He also said:

    “Follow Me.” — Matthew 4:19

The Savior who died for us also showed us how to live.

“Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps.” — 1 Peter 2:21

    Many admire Jesus.

    Few imitate Him.

    Many call Him Lord.

Few follow when obedience becomes unpopular.

“Why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” — Luke 6:46

    JESUS REVEALED TRUE SABBATH-KEEPING

The same Jesus who created the Sabbath also kept it.

“The Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.” — Mark 2:28

He stripped away man-made burdens and restored its true beauty:

    Worship.
    Mercy.
    Healing.
    Fellowship.
    Rest in God.

“It is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.” — Matthew 12:12

Jesus did not abolish the Sabbath.

He rescued it from legalism and revealed its Christ-centered purpose.

The Sabbath points to Him as:

    Creator.
    Redeemer.
    Lord.
    Rest for the weary soul.

“Come unto Me… and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

    THE SABBATH WILL OUTLIVE SIN

The Sabbath did not begin with Israel.

It began in Eden—before sin, before nations, and before denominations.

“God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.” — Genesis 2:3

Jesus honored it during His earthly life.

And Scripture reveals that the redeemed will worship from Sabbath to Sabbath in the new earth.

“From one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me.” — Isaiah 66:23

    The Sabbath began before sin,
was exemplified by Christ during redemption,
and will remain when sin is gone forever.

    What God sanctified in Eden,
    what Jesus honored on earth,
and what the redeemed will celebrate eternally—

should not be strange to Christ’s followers today.

    ONLY JESUS SAVES

We are not saved by keeping a day.

We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

“By grace are ye saved through faith.” — Ephesians 2:8

But saving grace does not excuse rebellion.

It forgives the sinner, transforms the heart, and writes God’s law within.

“I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.” — Hebrews 8:10

Obedience is not the price of salvation.

It is the fruit of salvation.

“If ye love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15

    Truth without Christ becomes cold.

    Obedience without love becomes legalism.

But faith that beholds Calvary produces loving loyalty.

    THE REAL ISSUE IS AUTHORITY

The deepest Sabbath question is not merely:

    Which day?

    It is:

Who rules my conscience—Christ or tradition?

Christ warned against worship built upon human commands.

“In vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” — Matthew 15:9

    A tradition may be ancient.

    It may be popular.

It may be defended by millions.

    But age cannot sanctify error.

    Popularity cannot replace divine authority.

“To the law and to the testimony.” — Isaiah 8:20

    CHRIST IS CALLING YOU CLOSER

    Perhaps you followed tradition sincerely.

Jesus is not calling you to pride, bitterness, or argument.

    He is calling you to:

    Repentance.
    Faith.
    Surrender.
    Obedience.

Repent of placing human authority above His Word.

Believe—not in your obedience, but in His cleansing blood.

    Surrender to His transforming grace.

    Follow wherever His truth leads.

“The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:7

“These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.” — Revelation 14:4

“The strongest argument in favor of the gospel is a loving and lovable Christian.” — The Ministry of Healing, p. 470

The narrow path has never been crowded.

    But Jesus walks there.

    The crowd cannot forgive you.

    Tradition cannot transform you.

    A denomination cannot save you.

    Only Christ can.

Do not measure truth by the crowd.

Measure everything by Christ and His Word.

    Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive my compromise. Cleanse me by Your blood, write Your law upon my heart, teach me to keep Your Sabbath as You did—with worship, mercy, love, and joy—and give me courage to follow You from this earth into eternity.
Daily Bible Lesson. TRUTH IS NOT POPULAR—WHY DO SO FEW FOLLOW JESUS IN HIS OWN SABBATH PATH? “As His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day.” — Luke 4:16 Luke does not describe a rare visit. He reveals Christ’s custom. The Sabbath was not an accident in His life. It was part of His faithful walk with the Father. TRUTH IS NOT DECIDED BY THE CROWD Noah stood with God while the world laughed. Elijah stood for truth while a nation compromised. Jesus stood upon Scripture while religious leaders defended tradition. The crowd may be sincere— and still be wrong. “Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil.” — Exodus 23:2 Jesus did not ask: What is popular? What is comfortable? What does the majority practice? He answered: “It is written.” — Matthew 4:4 Truth is not settled by numbers. It is settled by God’s Word. JESUS LEFT AN EXAMPLE—NOT MERELY A MESSAGE Jesus did not only say: “Believe in Me.” He also said: “Follow Me.” — Matthew 4:19 The Savior who died for us also showed us how to live. “Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps.” — 1 Peter 2:21 Many admire Jesus. Few imitate Him. Many call Him Lord. Few follow when obedience becomes unpopular. “Why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” — Luke 6:46 JESUS REVEALED TRUE SABBATH-KEEPING The same Jesus who created the Sabbath also kept it. “The Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.” — Mark 2:28 He stripped away man-made burdens and restored its true beauty: Worship. Mercy. Healing. Fellowship. Rest in God. “It is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.” — Matthew 12:12 Jesus did not abolish the Sabbath. He rescued it from legalism and revealed its Christ-centered purpose. The Sabbath points to Him as: Creator. Redeemer. Lord. Rest for the weary soul. “Come unto Me… and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 THE SABBATH WILL OUTLIVE SIN The Sabbath did not begin with Israel. It began in Eden—before sin, before nations, and before denominations. “God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.” — Genesis 2:3 Jesus honored it during His earthly life. And Scripture reveals that the redeemed will worship from Sabbath to Sabbath in the new earth. “From one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me.” — Isaiah 66:23 The Sabbath began before sin, was exemplified by Christ during redemption, and will remain when sin is gone forever. DATE: 14TH AUGUST 2026
    TOPIC: BE HONEST
    ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:1 JOHN 1:9 (NLT)
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
    Devotional message:

One of the differences between a believer who experiences genuine restoration and one who remains trapped in repeated failure is the way we respond when we make mistakes. Many people, when they appear before God after falling, immediately begin to justify themselves, explain why they failed, or point to someone else as the reason for their actions. We see this pattern in the Garden of Eden. When Adam was confronted by God, he pointed to the woman, while Eve pointed to the serpent. Instead of immediately acknowledging their disobedience, they shifted responsibility.

Child of God, God cannot restore what we are unwilling to acknowledge. Restoration begins when we become honest before Him. There is no need to hide from the One who already knows everything about us. When we come before God with a broken and contrite heart, acknowledge our error, repent, and ask for His help, we position ourselves to receive His mercy and grace.

The Psalmist understood this posture. David did not merely try to conceal his failures; he came before God and cried for mercy and cleansing. He understood that his greatest need was not to defend himself but to be restored. Psalm 51:10 (NLT) says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”

Sometimes the reason a person keeps repeating the same failure is because they have never truly confronted it before God. They keep explaining it, blaming others, minimizing it, or pretending that it is not serious. But when we acknowledge, “Lord, I cannot overcome this by my own strength; I need Your help,” we begin to experience the grace that enables us to stand.

This does not mean we should live under condemnation. There is a difference between condemnation and conviction. Condemnation tells you that you are hopeless and should remain in your failure; the Holy Spirit convicts you so that you can repent, be cleansed, and return to fellowship with God.

Child of God, do not allow pride to keep you in a cycle of defeat. If you have fallen, arise. If you have erred, acknowledge it. If you have become weak, ask for strength. If you have wandered, return to the Father. Your failure does not have to become your permanent identity.

The moment you acknowledge your insufficiency and surrender yourself to God's help, you open your heart to His transforming grace. His mercy is greater than your failure, and His grace is sufficient to help you walk uprightly.

True restoration begins with honest acknowledgement, genuine repentance, and dependence on God's grace. Stop justifying the error and allow God to restore you.

    PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I come before You with an open and honest heart. Forgive me for every error, disobedience, and failure I have tried to justify or hide. Give me the grace to acknowledge my weaknesses without shifting blame.Let Your mercy restore me and Your grace strengthen me to stand. In Jesus' name, Amen.

THEME: THE WEIGHT OF COVENANT I

    AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A ADEBOYE

MEMORISE: "My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips." Psalm 89:34

    READ: Genesis 17:1-8
1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

    MESSAGE:
In today's Bible reading, God made a covenant with Abram and promised to make him a father of many nations, then changed his name to Abraham. God never lies, so all the promises that He made to Abraham were fulfilled. Numbers 23:19 says: "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" When God makes a covenant with a person, He always fulfils His part, and this gives the fellow access to everything he or she will ever need on earth. These things include long life, prosperity, favour, blessings, joy, peace, divine health, and everything good. The devil, on the other hand, is unable to keep any covenant he makes. He breaks his promises at will because he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

People often enter into covenants with other parties to receive something from them, while also giving something in return. The real weight of a covenant, however, comes when one of the parties involved is unable to fulfil their obligations. In most cases, a heavy weight of death is the consequence for breaking a covenant.

When people join secret societies, they enter into covenants. When they do not do the things they are asked to do in the group, the penalty is usually death. You might be asking yourself, "Why would anybody want to join a cult knowing that it could lead to their death?" Some people claim that they join secret societies because they need protection, while others say that it is for prosperity and other benefits. It is important to note that the devil lures them into such societies with the promise of those things, but in return, he takes their souls and destroys them. What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul (Matthew 16:26)? A soul is too heavy a weight for anyone to surrender to the devil.

Beloved, do not allow the devil to tempt you into establishing an evil covenant with empty promises, and if you have entered into any covenant with hell and signed a pact with satan, Jesus can set you free if you run to Him. He will not cast away anyone who comes to Him (John 6:37). I pray that the Lord will establish His covenant of peace with you and your household, in Jesus' name.

    KEY POINT:
Any covenant that is made with the devil is based on lies.

    BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
    Jeremiah 33-36

HYMN 11: STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF CHRIST MY KING
1 Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

    Chorus:
    Standing, standing,
    Standing on the promises of God my Saviour;
    Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

2 Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

3 Standing on the promises I now can see
    Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

4 Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

5 Standing on the promises I shall not fall,
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call.
Resting in my Saviour as my All in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

  • Good evening, brethren.
    1. Evening devotion for today.

    ED.i. *DAILY WALK WITH CHRIST*
    (COCIN DEVOTIONAL)

    *DATE:*
    THURSDAY 13TH AUGUST, 2026

    *SUB-THEME:*
    YOUTHS: VESSELS OF GOD'S GRACE.

    *TOPIC:*
    BE AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS

    *TEXT:*
    1 TIMOTHY 4:11-16
    11. Command and teach these things.
    12. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
    13. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.
    14. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
    15. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.
    16. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

    *TOPIC:*
    BE AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS

    *THE MESSAGE:*
In a society where individualism and humanism are emphasised, godly models become scarce. In today's text, Paul encouraged Timothy to stand out by being an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. He must accompany these qualities with sound doctrine and diligently live it out, for his salvation and that of others. These virtues should be lived out without compromise, regardless of one's age. Every believer, young or old, is called to live in a way that reflects Christ and inspires others to follow. Sadly, many young people today are influenced by vices, but Christians are urged to lead lives that model godly character. How is your testimony in your home, community, workplace, and church? Be a role model for Christ's kingdom.

    *REFLECTION:*
Set a good example for your peers.

    *PRAYER:*
Father, reform my character, in Jesus' name. Amen.

    *MEMORY VERSE FOR THE MONTH:*
    2 TIMOTHY 2:21.
"If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be instruments for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master, and prepared to do any good work.

    *TODAY'S BIBLE READING PLAN:*
    JEREMIAH 46-49.

    ED.ii. THE SABBATH

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work." - Exodus 20:8-10

The commandment to keep the Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments, so a commandment from the Lord God. The reason I am talking about this is because we live in an incredibly hectic time. Life is so much different compared to fifty years ago. Everything is to be done quickly and in a hurry. This is also because of the increase in science (see Daniel 12: 4). People no longer have peace in today's society. There is also a lack of rest time in the lives of many Christians.

    A gift from God

However, God has given us a day to rest. Exodus 16:29 states: 'The Lord has given you the Sabbath.' The Sabbath is a gift from God and has a holy purpose. Sabbath means to rest, to stop. Every now and then people have to rest from what they are doing. Otherwise you will overwork yourself and get a burnout. When God created heaven and earth, He rested. As His creation was not safe yet, God had a plan to secure His creation. God was able to rest only after Jesus had completed His work on Calvary and rose from the death on the first day of the week. This is why we Christians celebrate the Sabbath day on Sunday.

    Spiritual rest

There is something even more important though and that is our spiritual rest. In Hebrews 4:10 we read about a Sabbath rest for God's people: 'Anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His.'When you come to Jesus, you will get complete rest in spirit, soul and body. Every day is a Sabbath day for the Christian who is in Jesus Christ. If you are not at rest yet, go to Him who said: 'Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest' (Matthew 11:28).

    2. Evening Prayer for today.

    EP.i. Evening Prayer

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ⏤ Isaiah 1:18

The best remedy for a troubled heart is to focus on God’s unchanging character. ⏤ Charles Stanley

O Lord, we bow before You in loving reverence. All our blessings come from You, and we praise You. We are sinful, and You are holy. We are not worthy to approach You, yet You have made a way for us to draw near to You with confidence, as children to a Father. Lord, cleanse our hearts as we come to You. Fill us with Your Spirit so that, renewed in the spirit of our minds, we may display all the virtues and graces of the Christian life in our daily walk.

We need Your cleansing tonight after the day's journey in this sin-stained world. Our feet have been soiled in the dust as we walked through the day, our hands have been stained with the evil around us, our lips have spoken words we should not have spoken, and our hearts have been made unclean by wrong thoughts, feelings, and imaginations. Cleanse us tonight. Wash us, and we shall be whiter than snow!

We have cares and worries that distract us at the end of the day. Help us to lay them all in Your hands and leave them there. Give us Your peace. Help us to cast our burdens on You and trust that You will take care of them. Make all things work together for our good.

Have pity tonight, O God, on this sorrowful, sinful world. Remember the poor and open the hearts of those who have plenty to help those in need. Look with compassion on the sick and give them relief or the patience to endure their pain. Comfort those who are in sorrow. Hear us in these evening prayers, we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*TOPIC:* BE AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS *THE MESSAGE:* In a society where individualism and humanism are emphasised, godly models become scarce.
