  • What are the warning signs of a dying church?

    https://patrickryanlewis.com/2026/07/31/seven-symptoms-of-a-dying-church-and-the-hope-of-revival/

Churches rarely drift overnight. More often, decline happens slowly as unhealthy patterns become normal. In this new post, I look at seven symptoms of a dying church—from continuous conflict and prolonged meetings to protecting traditions more than pursuing the mission of Christ.

But this is not a message of hopelessness. A dying church is never beyond the reach of a living Savior. Jesus still calls His people to wake up, strengthen what remains, and return to Him.

“Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die.” — Revelation 3:2

If you’ve ever wondered how churches lose their spiritual vitality—and how renewal can begin—this post is for you.

  • A BROKEN COMMITMENT: WHY YOU STOPPED SERVING IN GOD’S HOUSE

Every believer is called to serve in God’s house.

Some started with fire—choir, ushering, evangelism, media, cleaning, intercession—but along the line, something happened.

The commitment broke. The passion faded. The service stopped. Today, God is calling His children to return.

    1. YOUR SERVICE IS A COVENANT, NOT A CASUAL ACT

Serving God is a spiritual covenant. It is not a voluntary hobby; it is a divine responsibility.

Deuteronomy 10:12 – “What does the Lord require of you… to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Serving God is not optional; it is a requirement. Many broke their commitment because they lost sight of the covenant nature of service.

    2. MANY STOPPED SERVING BECAUSE OF OFFENCE

Church hurt, misunderstanding, gossip, rejection, and conflict have stopped many from serving.

Matthew 24:10 – “And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.”

Offence is Satan’s most successful weapon to break a believer’s commitment.

You don’t stop serving God because humans offended you. God did not offend you.

    3. SOME STOPPED BECAUSE THEIR SERVICE BECAME BUSINESS

Many who once served freely now charge money for choir ministration, drumming, media, ushering, or evangelism.

Matthew 6:24 – “You cannot serve God and mammon.”

When service becomes a contract, the anointing is lost. God rejects service driven by money, not love.

    4. OTHERS STOPPED BECAUSE THEIR PRIORITY SHIFTED

Work, school, business, relationships, and personal ambition can break your commitment when placed above God.

Haggai 1:4 – “Is it time for you to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies in ruins?”

Your life will always suffer when the things of God are no longer your priority.

    5. SOME LOST THEIR FIRE DUE TO SPIRITUAL WEAKNESS

When prayer life dies, service automatically dies.

Romans 12:11 – “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”

Where there is no fervency, there is no service.

    6. GOD REMEMBERS YOUR SERVICE—BUT HE ALSO NOTICES YOUR STOPPAGE

God never forgets past service, but He also notices when you walk away.

Hebrews 6:10 – “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love…”

He remembers your commitment but is calling you to return.

    7. THE DANGER OF BROKEN COMMITMENT

    When a believer stops serving:

    * Their spiritual covering reduces

    * Their passion weakens

    * Their gifts decay

    * Their reward is affected

    * Their intimacy with God drops

Luke 9:62 – “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

    * Breaking commitment affects your destiny.

    8. GOD DOES NOT BLESS TALENT—HE BLESSES SERVICE

You may be gifted, but if you are not serving, you are not useful in the kingdom.

1 Peter 4:10 – “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…”

Your gift was given for service, not decoration.

    9. RETURN TO YOUR FIRST LOVE

God is calling you back to where you started before life and situations distracted you.

Revelation 2:4–5 – “You have forsaken your first love… Remember… Repent… and do the works you did at first.”

    - Go back to choir.
    - Go back to evangelism.
    - Go back to service.
    - Go back to where your heart once burned for God.

    10. GOD STILL HAS NEED OF YOU

Even if you stopped, even if you failed, God is still calling: “Return to service.”

Isaiah 6:8 – “Here am I; send me!”

God is waiting for those who will rise again and restore their commitment.

Your commitment may have broken—but God’s love for you has not broken.

He is calling you back to rebuild, to renew, and to serve Him again with passion, humility, and faithfulness.

    PRAYER
Father, restore my commitment. Rekindle my fire. Heal my wounds. Reset my priorities. Empower me to serve You faithfully again. Amen.

  • The Danger of Backslidden

    Jeremiah 3:12-14 (KJV)
“Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger forever. Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God…”

To be backslidden means to turn away from God after once walking with Him.

It is to fall from spiritual zeal into spiritual coldness, from righteousness into compromise.

Backsliding is not always sudden — it often begins subtly, with small acts of disobedience, neglect of prayer, loss of hunger for the Word, and indifference toward the things of God.

The danger is that backsliding can lead to spiritual death if not quickly addressed.

Many started well in the faith, but because they did not continue steadfastly, they fell away.

    1. Backsliding Begins in the Heart

Proverbs 14:14 (KJV) — “The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.”

Before anyone backslides outwardly, the heart first turns away from God.

It begins with secret sins, bitterness, pride, or loss of love for righteousness.
Guard your heart, for that is where backsliding begins.

    2. Backsliding Brings Spiritual Blindness

Revelation 2:4-5 — “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen…”

When you backslide, you lose the sensitivity of the Holy Spirit.

The things that once troubled your conscience no longer bother you.

You stop hearing God clearly, and your spiritual eyes become dim.

    3. Backsliding Breaks Fellowship with God

Isaiah 59:2 — “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you.”

When sin enters, communion is broken. The peace and joy of the Holy Spirit are lost.

God cannot dwell where sin reigns. This separation is the greatest danger of all — living without the presence of God.

    4. Backsliding Leads to Destruction if Unrepented

2 Peter 2:20-21 — “For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein… the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.”

A backslider who refuses to repent ends up worse than before knowing God.

The enemy takes advantage and destroys their testimony, peace, and sometimes even their life.

    5. God Still Calls the Backslider to Return

Hosea 14:1-2 — “O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the LORD…”

Even in backsliding, God’s mercy still speaks. He calls the fallen to repentance and restoration. He is not willing that any should perish but that all should return to Him in truth and humility.

    How to Return from Backsliding

Acknowledge your sin – Psalm 51:3

    Repent sincerely – Acts 3:19

Return to fellowship with God – James 4:8

Renew your mind with the Word – Romans 12:2

Stay in fellowship with other believers – Hebrews 10:25

Be filled again with the Holy Spirit – Ephesians 5:18

Beloved, backsliding is not just a fall — it is a drift away from God’s presence, and it endangers your soul.

But the good news is that God is always ready to restore. Don’t stay far from Him. Return, and He will heal your backsliding and love you freely (Hosea 14:4).

    Pray This Prayer

Lord, forgive me for every way I have backslidden in my heart.

Holy Spirit, rekindle my first love for God.

Deliver me from spiritual lukewarmness and compromise.

Restore to me the joy of my salvation, O Lord.

Help me to stand firm till the end in Jesus’ name.

    Jeremiah 3:12–14, Proverbs 14:14, Revelation 2:4–5, Isaiah 59:2, 2 Peter 2:20–21, Hosea 14:1–4, Psalm 51:3, Acts 3:19, Romans 12:2, Hebrews 10:25.
